Introductions

I am a 40 year old author who recently released my debut novel, 'Lost Connections' - a crime/thriller with a twist of dark humour. I am an avid reader with a preference to small town crime, fast-paced thrillers, and dark humour. I love every thing from Joe R Lansdale, Linwood Barclay, & Kinky Friedman, to Bentley Little, Stephen King & Simon Kernick.
I am currently writing my new book which is called, 'The Place That Never Existed'. My books have a crime/thriller backbone, but are full of twists that dip in and out of different genres. I will also be releasing a novella called, 'Mary-Ann' early next year.

Hi, I don't know anyone. I love noir fiction and I'd like to meet some people who like it too ^^

Hehe fair point. Thanks for the welcome :-)
I suppose I should have said a bit about myself. I'm from the US originally, but live in Australia. I used to work in bookstores, and in one of them, a wonderful old place that sold used books, the Mystery/Thriller section was absolutely enormous. One time this guy came in who was very unkempt -- looked like he hadn't showered in weeks, or changed his clothes -- and had a very intense, angry look about him. At the time I thought, "oh no, here we go." See, the store was located in an area where the occasional bum would wander in, many of whom were mentally ill, of course. The peaceful ones I left alone, but now and then one would get rather belligerent and even violent, so I reluctantly would have to show him or her the door.
But this guy ended up keeping to himself, and the only nuisance was that he had plonked himself right down in the middle of one of the mystery aisles, books spread everywhere (which I knew I'd have to pick up and re-shelve later), madly scribbling away on page after page of a yellow legal pad. It was a slow day, however, and the few customers there seemed perfectly content to simply step over his mess and continue browsing, so I said nothing.
Three hours later, it was approaching 6:00, closing time. "Sir, may I help you with anything? We'll be closing in about five minutes."
He squinted up at me, shook his head silently, his rather hound-like stubble-strewn jowls wobbling from side to side as he did so. I nodded and went back to tidy up the front desk, secretly dreading having to get firm with this guy when it came time to kick him out. He was a very large man, after all. I went outside to bring in the "free books" rack, an old library metal rack with three wheels (one was awkwardly missing). That was when it occurred to me that the taxi idling at the curb just down from the front door of the shop had actually been there for quite a long time. Perhaps hours, even.
It was 6:01, and the big man still hadn't moved. "Sir, it's 6:00, and we're closing now." He nodded and raised a finger -- one sec, it said -- and continued scribbling wildly on his legal pad, still half-sprawled on the floor between stacks and stacks of books. For the fourth or fifth time, I tried to see what he was writing, but it was completely illegible to me.
6:05, time to get serious. (There was a bar next door, and I was thirsty, after all!) I was just about to head back over to the mystery section and ask him to leave in a firmer tone of voice when I heard his gruff voice call out in some sort of accent that, to me, sounded like Brooklyn: "Hey, you got any boxes?" I walked over to him, and saw that he had manoeuvred himself to his feet and was struggling to organize his piles of books.
"Would you like to purchase some of these today, sir?" I asked, doubtfully, standing back a few feet to avoid his stench.
"Yeah, all of 'em. Got any boxes?"
I turned the register back on, and after taping together a bunch of boxes that I'd broken up and stored in the back room earlier that day, I rang him up. It was another twenty minutes or so before I'd finally finished helping him and the taxi driver load the boxes into the car (the ones that would fit, anyway; the rest had to be left to be picked up the next morning), but hey, it was worth it: This "bum" ended up buying more than six hundred used mystery books.
I guess you really can't judge a book by its cover :-p
Sorry for the long-winded introduction / tangent there. I look forward to getting to know you all :-)
Incidentally, I run a small Goodreads group called Short Fiction, in which we read and discuss short stories, flash fiction, etc, across multiple genres. Feel free to come check us out :-)

That was a great story, Gaines. I always thought it would be fun to work in a bookstore. It's too bad they're aren't many used book stores left in my town anymore.

I've been on Goodreads for a long time but I have not really used it actively... Not sure how this forum will work on the mobile app since I use it primarily for keeping track on books I've read. I used to be an avid reader but have slowed down a lot these days... much to my chagrin. I read a couple of genres though I think its about time I get back into mysteries and thrillers again and am looking for some recommendations.
I am on the verge of idolising China Mieville and yes, that's creepy but his weird fiction is one of the few things that gets this brain pumping hard.
Happy to meet you all!
Chris
