Susang | 1 comments My name is Susan. I live in New Zealand. I read a wide range of books, including a lot of young adult, eg Mary Hoffman, Rebecca Stead, Madeleine L'Engle. Also like Hilary Mantell, Neil Gaiman, Janette Turner Hospital, Jostein Gardner, Robert Harris, P G Wodehouse and Margaret Atwood. Favourite book of all is Pride and Prejudice (sorry to be stereotypical).

In crime read all sorts but particularly like authors such as Minette Walters, Elly Griffiths, Louise Penny, Reginald Hill, Peter Lovesy, Jane Adams, Agatha Christie, Kate Atkinson, Elizabeth Peters, Mary Stewart, Alexander McCall Smith, Josephine Tey, Sarah Cauldwell, Colin Dexter, Nicci French, Kate Ellis and Emma Lathen.

Looking forward to other recommendations.

Bernard A. (balopinto) | 23 comments Hello, All. My name is Bernard. I'm a mystery reader and writer from Pennsylvania. My first novel, Power in the Blood is published on Kindle and Smashwords. The second novel is 45 pages old. My favorite mystery author is Jonathan Kellerman. Besides crime novels, I most enjoy American historical biography; that's how I learn how things got this messed up.

message 1110: by Greg (new)

Greg Cummings (gorillaland) Greetings MCT'ers. My name's Greg, and I am an author of exotic adventure that doesn't read as much as I'd like, the reason being I'm all the way over here in sunny Uganda where there's a dearth of literature available. Of course digital should have changed all that but without a credit card those kindle books are just as far out of reach. Accordingly, I listen to a lot of old time radio from the 40s and 50s, shows like Escape and Suspense which stream 27/7 on Radio Antioch (bless them). Hence, I'm starting to get the hang of cliffhangers. Of course, hanging with you good people is also free, so here I am, thrilled to be here and looking forward to some intriguing confabs.

Davis Stamford (davisstamford) Hello, my name is Davis and I am overweight. And hungry too. Just kidding... kind of. I read a lot of books but don't always get on this site. I am hoping over the summer to get on here more. Thanks for having me :-)

Greg Cummings (gorillaland) Jenni wrote: "Hi Greg, very exotic location. I'm sure it is beautiful out there. What's the temperature like? Great to hear of things and lifestyles from far corners of the world unspoilt by a credit card. ..."

Thanks for the offer of 'The Secret Agent' though I cannot see where to download it.

As for temperatures down here, it's in the mid 20s Celsius most days in Kampala, where I live. There are rainy and dry seasons which occur with no regularity and this lack of distinct seasons distorts one's perception of the passage of time. Power cuts are disruptive. But that's when books are magical, sitting under the Ulasambya tree reading by the light of a hurricane lamp.

Living a lifestyle that doesn't involve credit cards certainly requires fortitude and imagination. Still, it gives me heaps of material for my novels. What I miss most is other literary-minded people with whom I can share story and plot ideas and help me sort out the wheat from the chaff. Looking forward to exchanging tales.

Greg Cummings (gorillaland) Jac wrote: "As for getting a sense of what is good, you have to read and read. What people in our club say gives a good sense of what people like and dislike about books that you have already read. Finding o..."

That's superb advice Jac. Appreciate you taking the time to send it to me. I'm intrigued by your method of researching places you wish to write about. I'll try that approach myself.

Having just written a novel set in Somalia, without ever setting foot in that country, I am feeling slightly guilty about my own scene setting methodology. I read whatever I can get my hands on (I had a slew of digital books downloaded to an iPad which got stolen) and rely heavily on the web.

Obviously one cannot research aromas and sensations through the Internet, nor as you say the way characters interact in a given environment. But virtual travel is a possibility these days. Google Earth is my primary tool. It allows me to fly virtually into locations without a visa, and look around to my heart's content.

Often there are photographs people have posted on Panaromio, and I'll discover something quite bizarre which I feel compelled to add to the story. For example, in one chapter my hero Derek Strangely is travelling through the Ethiopian rift valley. I charted his course, then let a virtual 'fly-thru' take me there, sat back, sipping my coffee, soaking up the look if not the feel of the place. Then, in a forest on the escarpment I spotted a photo of a particularly macabre looking wooden sculpture. BAM! Into the story it went, to indicate trouble lay ahead. I may not have seen that statue had I been there in reality.

I told my publishers I thought I needed to visit Somalia before I completed the final draft but they dismissed the idea, saying it was a work of fiction with adequate verisimilitude. 'It's not as if any of your readers will go there and spot the errors.' I don't know. But one must make do...

Having said that, Najera, the northern suburb of Kampala where I live with my muse and life partner Kigongo, is wholly captivating. It's not typical for a mzungu (white person) to live in this neighbourhood; I'm the only one. Still, all my neighbours are professional middle-class Ugandans, and much of life here is not particularly exotic. It's the little differences that really fascinate.

As I write this, Kigongo is reading me poetry from her Blackberry - Pablo Neruda - and in between the lines she shouts orders in Luganda to the askari girl to close the gate so the dogs don't escape...

message 1124: by Paul (new)

Paul Levine | 4 comments As a former lawyer who writes legal thrillers, I enjoy Scott Turow's books. Also some of the lighter fare of Lisa Scottoline and Janet Evanovich.

As a Florida writer, the Travis McGee books of John D. MacDonald have always spoken to me.

For those who might be interested, I'm also a screenwriter and wrote about 20 scripts for the CBS Navy show "JAG" about a decade ago.

For those who are still reading, my books include the "Jake Lassiter" and "Solomon vs. Lord" series."

That is the coolest thing I think I've heard that you wrote some of the scripts for the show JAG! I LOVED that show and was just talking with a friend of mine how we wished that show was still on the air because it was STILL the best show ever!

Tammy AZ (tammyaz) | 3 comments Hello All - My name is Tammy, I'm 47 and live in Phoenix, Arizona. I've spent my entire career with a local government working in various areas of budgeting, finance, and administration. I recently finished a Master's Degree in Information Resources and Library Science because my real goal is to become a librarian so I can be surrounded by books all day.

I read all kinds of books but prefer thrillers, mysteries, and contemporary and historical fiction. I'm not a huge fan of science fiction but have found that all genres have their high points so will give almost any type of book a try. A couple of my favorite authors right now are Tana French and Elizabeth George and I recently read a John Sanford after abandoning his series a few years ago.
