Thanks for the offer of 'The Secret Agent' though I cannot see where to download it.
As for temperatures down here, it's in the mid 20s Celsius most days in Kampala, where I live. There are rainy and dry seasons which occur with no regularity and this lack of distinct seasons distorts one's perception of the passage of time. Power cuts are disruptive. But that's when books are magical, sitting under the Ulasambya tree reading by the light of a hurricane lamp.
Living a lifestyle that doesn't involve credit cards certainly requires fortitude and imagination. Still, it gives me heaps of material for my novels. What I miss most is other literary-minded people with whom I can share story and plot ideas and help me sort out the wheat from the chaff. Looking forward to exchanging tales.

That's superb advice Jac. Appreciate you taking the time to send it to me. I'm intrigued by your method of researching places you wish to write about. I'll try that approach myself.
Having just written a novel set in Somalia, without ever setting foot in that country, I am feeling slightly guilty about my own scene setting methodology. I read whatever I can get my hands on (I had a slew of digital books downloaded to an iPad which got stolen) and rely heavily on the web.
Obviously one cannot research aromas and sensations through the Internet, nor as you say the way characters interact in a given environment. But virtual travel is a possibility these days. Google Earth is my primary tool. It allows me to fly virtually into locations without a visa, and look around to my heart's content.
Often there are photographs people have posted on Panaromio, and I'll discover something quite bizarre which I feel compelled to add to the story. For example, in one chapter my hero Derek Strangely is travelling through the Ethiopian rift valley. I charted his course, then let a virtual 'fly-thru' take me there, sat back, sipping my coffee, soaking up the look if not the feel of the place. Then, in a forest on the escarpment I spotted a photo of a particularly macabre looking wooden sculpture. BAM! Into the story it went, to indicate trouble lay ahead. I may not have seen that statue had I been there in reality.
I told my publishers I thought I needed to visit Somalia before I completed the final draft but they dismissed the idea, saying it was a work of fiction with adequate verisimilitude. 'It's not as if any of your readers will go there and spot the errors.' I don't know. But one must make do...
Having said that, Najera, the northern suburb of Kampala where I live with my muse and life partner Kigongo, is wholly captivating. It's not typical for a mzungu (white person) to live in this neighbourhood; I'm the only one. Still, all my neighbours are professional middle-class Ugandans, and much of life here is not particularly exotic. It's the little differences that really fascinate.
As I write this, Kigongo is reading me poetry from her Blackberry - Pablo Neruda - and in between the lines she shouts orders in Luganda to the askari girl to close the gate so the dogs don't escape...

As a Florida writer, the Travis McGee books of John D. MacDonald have always spoken to me.
For those who might be interested, I'm also a screenwriter and wrote about 20 scripts for the CBS Navy show "JAG" about a decade ago.
For those who are still reading, my books include the "Jake Lassiter" and "Solomon vs. Lord" series."

That is the coolest thing I think I've heard that you wrote some of the scripts for the show JAG! I LOVED that show and was just talking with a friend of mine how we wished that show was still on the air because it was STILL the best show ever!

Been a member of Goodreads since 2010, and just joined this group today, in order to contribute a comment. I have meant to join this group along time ago...but never got around to it. I live in Toronto and work from home, look after my husband and our 2 Labs...but my favorite pastime is reading mystery, suspense, crime thrillers. I have read 30 books so far this year and plan on reading about 120.I always post my reviews online as well on Amazon.com. Some of my favourite authors are Jenny Hilborne, Michael Connelly, Joseph Finder, John Grisham, Jon Osborne and many others. Glad to be part of this group.

LOL Well officially....welcome dipanjan!"
Honored. /Bow.

I read all kinds of books but prefer thrillers, mysteries, and contemporary and historical fiction. I'm not a huge fan of science fiction but have found that all genres have their high points so will give almost any type of book a try. A couple of my favorite authors right now are Tana French and Elizabeth George and I recently read a John Sanford after abandoning his series a few years ago.
