Hello. My name is Ricardo, I live in Mexico and I enjoy reading mystery, horror, sci-fi and fantasy books. I'm fairly new to the mystery genre though, having discovered that I liked it only a few years ago, thanks to a recommendation of a Dennis Lehane book. I joined this group in order to find more recommendations of good mystery books. I'm about to start reading a book titled "Sharp Objects" by Gillian Flynn, which I believe is from the mystery genre.
Hello, I am Lorraine and give in Victoria, British Columbia. I've belonged to Goodreads for about 3-4 years now and don't know how I managed without it! Since mystery is my favourite genre I was happy to be invited to join this group. My favourite mystery authors are Peter Robinson, P.D. James, Agatha Christie, Lynda La Plante, Louise Penny and Joanne Fluke. I also like classics such as Austen, Bronte and Dickens. My goal in 2013 is to read the books I purchased for my e-reader and at secondhand book sales and stop borrowing from the library until that is done. I haven't set a goal for 2013 yet as I find that encourages me to read short books just to get my totals up. I am 59 years old and work at the University of Victoria for one more year until I retire in January 2014 (which I am looking forward to very much!)
Hello Lorraine how's thingson the west coast, I'm from Ontario.Hi Ricardo', nice to meet you and welcome to both of you.
Hi Linda: The west coast is dull and rainy today, but the snowdrops and crocuses are starting to bloom. My favourite season of spring is starting to arrive.
Hello LorraineI just sent an email to a friend in Sequim, Wa. She is very near Port Angeles. She was a Principal until last year when she retired. We have been friends since the 60's.
You really don't need to send the rain south but alas it will reach us (Palm Springs, Ca area) later tonight.
Have been to Victoria twice and loved it!
Hi Shirley: I have been to Port Angeles and Sequim, WA (we love to travel to the casinos in northern Washington) and will be heading to Clearwater Casino (south of Port Townsend) in late March for a small vacation. Have only been to California once and it was in the late '80s (saw Disneyland and Universal Studies, then drove to San Diego for a few days). I don't think I could handle those freeways - we like to stick to the back roads whenever we go to the US. I wonder if you visited Victoria while you were on a cruise to Alaska? We get tons to cruise ships here in Victoria every summer, sometimes 5 boats dock on the same day.
Not a cruise. Just vacations. We did take a cruise to Alaska. Flew to Seattle then Alaska spent a week then cruised back to Seattle and flew home.
September was a great month to visit and although the cruise was not as bad as the one in the news the ship went bankrupt and was seized when they reached Seattle. Many amenities were sacrificed for the ship to get to Seattle.
We decided it was not for us we like to learn and land offers more opportunity. We weren't drinkers, bingo players, casino devotees.
A four corners vacation with steam locomotives were more to our liking.
I'm not crazy about cruises either. We usually get rough seas which leads to seasickness which leads to pills. We also seem to have trouble getting off the boat (waiting patiently in line, then impatiently, then getting angry). I think a steam locomotive trip sounds divine - I really regret that train travel is so expensive in Canada as we would love to travel across the country that way, but I don't want to sit up for 4 days for the cheapest seats! I'd love to get into one of those trains that you see in British movies, where the door opens from the outside right into your cabin.

They can grow on you and become an addiction. lol I think you will find Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn very interesting. We have just completed Flynn's novel Gone Girl as a group read. It was a wickedly good read.

Hi my name is Diane. I read quite a bit of everything but my main loves are contemporary, historical and mysteries. Look forward to getting to know everyone, though I already know quite a few of the members here. Thanks for the invite, this looks like a fantastic group.
Hi everyone! This looks like a great group indeed :) We're Over The Edge Books and we're what we call "new school" publishers, working very closely to publish works for independent writers, musicians, and artists. Wanted to share with you our latest release -- The Essex Man by Gary Phillips. He's prominent for his work in the urban lit, and in the L.A. community. As for the book itself.. imagine Batman + Shaft; noir + hip-hop. Please contact me if interested!
Otherwise, we have some great projects coming up -- including a mystery novel about the Mona Lisa (which is not in England, but is at least closer!). Will for sure keep you posted.
Thank you!

Hello Diane Its nice to have you join us welcomeI Would also like to wish a warm welcome to over the edge
Welcome to all the newcomers! Sadly, I only get to check Goodreads on my phone mostly and this thread takes way too long to pull up on it. I've not gotten to read updates on this thread in a week! Way too long for my tastes. But welcome to all the newcomers! We're very glad to have you here!
Hi everyone, I am Anushka from India. Reading thrillers is my first love but for quite a few time I've been reading a lot of fantasy books.Still, I'd love to be a part of this group so I can get back to reading thrillers and mysteries again. I miss it so much! :)
Hello! I'm Corrin, really excited to be part of this book group! I'm from England and just about to start a degree in nursing. Really enjoying crime/mystery books, particularly novels by Nicci French, started on the Frieda Klein series of theirs and loving it so far. I also like midwifery books (not sure why, just always a good read), which I guess doesn't link in too much with crime/mystery, unless you're aiming for a really morbid novel! A kind of shoot it out and run off with it book perhaps? Looking forward to sharing thoughts and suggestions for great books to read, always looking for something interesting!

Hi Jenni,Thanks for the welcome! I self-published. I'd wanted to release before Christmas but life got in the way:). Better late than never! Have received very positive feedback so far.
Welcome, Anushka, Corrin, Anirban, and Ashley! We are so happy to have you and look forward to having you join the discussions!
Hi I'm Luffy and I never heard of most writers being discussed. I hope to find some mild brethren feeling at most. Hope my expectations are met, if not surpassed.
Hi Luffy welcome to the group. I'm sure you'll like it here. I've some really good recommendations for authors I've read before.

greetings all...I am Maria29, originally a Louisiana girl currently living in Indiana. enjoy a wide range of books, but love the mystery genre. Rex Stout, Jefferson Bass, Julie Smith (Skip Langdon series) but also a Dan Brown fan. do my reading on my kindle fire now so i always have a book. looking forward to finding new titles to read.
Hello everyone. I'm DonnaCarol from North Carolina. A few days ago I was invited to join this site.I am looking forward to being included in such an interesting , diverse site. It has come at a good time. The genre of my choice is usually cozy mysteries but I have found lately that I need a break from them at times. Something with a little more , (KEY word here is little, lol..) edge to it seems to interest me more each day. I already added three to my TBR list after reviewing the March picks. Hoping to get some good suggestions for books that are more intense mystery than most cozies from all of you that are more familiar with these genres. I also congratulate you on creating a site for book lovers that includes so much more. Makes a well rounded, VERY interesting site to be a part of. Hope to get to know each of you over the next months.
Ghost Moon by Karen Robards. I know this one is probably quite tame to most of you, but it had me sleeping with the light on. She was great creating the "FEEL" of fear without too much gore or horror. I hope to find more similar to this to try.
Hi everyone! Awesome group you have here. I'm Kathy from Wichita, Kansas smack dab in the middle of the USA. I'm addicted to mysteries and had mostly read just cozies until I found GR and found out how many other types of mysteries I enjoy. Some of my favorite authors are Louise Penny, MC Beaton, Agatha Christie, PD James, Elizabeth Peters, Dorothy Sayers, JD Robb, Martha Grimes and Patricia Cornwell. I am fascinated by mysteries that are British. I can't get enough of London, the English countryside or the seaside.
I look forward to discovering new authors and getting to know new people.
I'm an animal lover and have a Schnoodle and an orange cat that I rescued last winter.
Cheers! :)
I'd love to, Ashton. May I stay with you? heheWhen I hit the lottery I will go and spend a couple of months. Then maybe I would be able to decide if I want to live in the big city or a small village.

Kathy, welcome. And if you are going to wish for the lottery, might as well wish big. lol...Live in the big city AND a small village. The best of both. Can you imagine the Broadway plays of New York, the cozy, familiar "family feel" of a small village with an AWESOME bookstore and library of course.
Peg, finally got dug out from the snow, but now we've got another 12'' on the way tomorrow night/Monday with blizzard conditions. We do need the moisture desperately so.....
