Danielle (dannieannie94) | 62 comments When I was a child I used to read this thick fantasy novel all the time. I had no idea how to actually read but I would sit there and make up stories and pretend I was reading the book out loud. My mother always was reading and she made my brother and I read every night before bed. I actually struggled with reading in elementary school. They pulled me out of class to tutor me on it. And then when I mastered it I couldn't stop.

I became a junkie. And now my room is stuffed with books and I read a book a day :).

Erin Latimer | 108 comments Do you actually read a book a day? :O That's crazy! I'm a fast reader but I can't manage a book per day!

harshini (watchmeread) | 644 comments A book a day? Brilliant! I don't think my mum would actually let me haha

Siobhan (totalwordjunkie) | 32 comments I can't remember when I started reading, but I remember when I was four my mum got remarried, and her new husband (my stepdad, obv) got me into the Chronicles of Narnia. I'd read all but the horse and his boy by the time I was six. He used to take me to the library every week and every time I buy a new bookcase now he helps me set it up. But I outread him by miles lol ... he was a teacher at my junior school and there could sometimes be two hours between school ending and him finishing his work for the day, and I had to sit in the school library with my brother waiting for him. Books have always just been there, you know?

And then I was pretty sick a few years ago, and they said that there might be brain damage caused by what I had, and since then I have read more than I ever used to. Like Danielle, it's possible for me to read a book in a day, but it has to be a gripping book, and I can't have work. But some books take me a while, like there's so much in the Count of Monte Cristo so that took me about three months. Every Harry Potter took me half a day the first read.

Now, I read to my son every night. We do three or four picture books and then a chapter of a chapter book. He's had all the Harry Potter books, and we're on the third Narnia book now. When I work lates, my stepdad reads him a Roald Dahl book, and my mum sticks to the picture books and makes them up. He'll like books if it kills me.

message 107: by harshini (new)

harshini (watchmeread) | 644 comments @Siobhan I am sure your son will love books too :)

message 108: by Siobhan (new)

Siobhan (totalwordjunkie) | 32 comments Thank you both! I'm sure Noah does love books too, now he recognises letters he's getting pretty good at reading labels and signs out, and he did what someone else said they used to, where if he knows a story he'll whisper along (he had the Gruffalo down by three) but that's all part of learning to read. He's stubborn though, trying to explain how the same combination of letters can make a different sound is not working (like, he says 'ch' like you do for cheese, he won't accept that for names like Chloe it's a different sound. Phonics have a lot to answer for). I think he can see that I can't help but read, so he wants to see what books are all about, he'll be addicted before he knows it ;)

harshini (watchmeread) | 644 comments Haha, most probably :)

Sashsyy (Goodreadscomploop_sashsyy) | 20 comments When I was 13, I think. That's when I'm always outside and found myself often in the libraries! That's when I started reading books that are mostly out of what i usually do which is not much, really.

message 111: by Purvika (new)

Purvika (violetstygian) when I was 5 my mom moved to India , and I had to start new school , I think you all know how difficult it is to adjust in new environment in mid-session. Anyway , I was a quite child , wouldn't get mingle with regular group . So one day I was eating my lunch and this girl came and told me to get up because that was her place , I did not like people ordering me so I didn't budge. It irritated her and she pushed me , I fell on the ground which made her laugh . Her friends gathered around me and started laughing , I ran away from there and hid in library and started crying. In one corner I saw a girl siting and reading a book , she was older than me . I turned away and tried to clean my face, she came to me and asked why am I crying , I told her about the girls so she sat beside me and gave me her book saying whenever I feel alone , i should read a book . The book was Alice in wonderland.
From that day till now I have never stopped reading ...

That's such a sad story, but a great ending. You're lucky to have met that girl, she seems like a wonderful role model.

message 113: by Purvika (new)

Purvika (violetstygian) yeah but i never got to meet her again... i din't even know her name.

This story is such a sad one but I guess it ended up to be a good experience for you because now you love books and if you didn't you wouldn't be here and we wouldn't know each other!

message 115: by Purvika (new)

Purvika (violetstygian) Yeah that's true... I still remember that day as my turning point of life ... It gave me two things...
My love for books.
And after that I tried my best to never be intimidated by bullies.

Harleen Truthfully about 3 years ago in fifth grade my sister really got obsessed with reading and she kind of grew on me I guess? But I'm so glad she did

Kathy | 7669 comments I started reading when I started work at the library where I live, I just saw all these awesome looking books coming in I couldn't help myself. Now I can't even go to the back wall...that's where the YA section is...without taking something home.

Kat (peace99) | 124 comments since i could read. i was best reader from kindergarten to =, even now.

message 122: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 24 comments I started reading a lot when my mother was diagnosed with a terminal heart condition when I was 12. The library became a sanctuary while she slowly faded away. She's been gone a long time and I have never lost the love for reading and I still look at libraries like a miniature sanctuary :) to me the written word is just an amazing concept, without words we would not have such wonderful stories to tell each other.

message 123: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (ChelseaLooWho) | 7 comments I don't remember learning to read but I do remember reading a lot of Junie B Jones and The Magic Treehouse books. In 3rd grade I started skipping recess to help the librarian shelve books. And the first book I remember falling in love with was Inkheart in the 4th grade :)

message 124: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (ChelseaLooWho) | 7 comments So I think a lot of my love of reading came from the librarian because she was the one who said "here's an amazing book". And I still talk to her even though I'm a high school freshman now. :)

Good old JK introduced an entire generation to reading. It's every author's dream. :D

message 130: by Zara's Retreat (new)

Zara's Retreat I think I've been a bookworm from the moment that I was able to read by myself, so just before I started primary school. I have been an avid reader ever since - even though there aren't enough hours in the day for reading in my humble opinion. LOL

❀ Crystal ✿ - PEACE ☮ LOVE ♥ BOOKS (crystaldc18) I'd like to think I've always been a bookworm. But to be honest I was never as bad as I am now until I started working at the library. All the books at your fingertips and so much easier to get in all varying topics. You can put holds on things before they're released and even have the librarians order books for you. As if all that's not good enough, staff has no late fees or max checkouts, so sometimes working here is more temptation than anything. There's so many books and so little time.

I was about 8yrs old and I started to stay up all night reading books becuase I was affraid to go to sleep in case she had an attack overnight and I didn't hear her. I started reading book after book and feel in love with stories that unfolded in front of me every night. My Love for reading inspired me then and continures to inspire me now.

message 139: by Nadine (new)

Nadine | 1 comments I remember I used to hate reading when I was younger. But in grade four when I had to show the teacher I knew how to read, it was a tiny book on giraffes she asked me about how they drink and keep safe from the lions. Then I realized I was even reading the book, I would just say the words but not actually think about what they meant. This gave me such a new sense and learning and adventure that I haven't stopped reading since!

message 141: by Jinny (new)

Jinny I became a bookworm when I was 8, when my brother forced me to read the first Harry Potter book, and oh my, I knew right away that books were even better than watching television! Afterwards, the public library would be my playground, and I would borrow nearly 10 books a week, and it was heaven! One of the perks of being a bookworm was when I entered first grade and I read faster than all the other kids, and I felt so cool. Haha!

message 142: by Katherine (new)

Katherine | 2741 comments I became a book worm... well, since I was a baby. My mom and dad, without fail, read to me every night. My mom read me actual picture books. my dad's weapon of choice was fairy tales, myths, legends, and Bible stories.

message 143: by [deleted user] (new)

Ive probably been a bookworm since I was in the womb. We have a home video of my dad reading to mums belly while I was in there.... Is that weird? Probably haha. But that's my family. I was read to a lot as a child so that probably started it. The favorites for mum to read to me were probably the magic pudding and Dr Seuss :) rhythmic and rhyming.
Some time later, I turned eight and got my first Harry Potter book, the rest is history :)

message 144: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine Lake | 237 comments I think I became a bookworm when I was in first grade maybe kindergarten. The older I got the more I wanted to read and during the summer all I ever did was read because it felt like I was in a totally different world and I could literally see the characters and situations.... even though it was just words. My mom taught me how to read and said it was a good thing I liked to read and that it would take me places. i'm pretty sure the older I get the more I'll want to read (even with all the homework I have)!

message 145: by Harmony (new)

Harmony | 163 comments I used to read all the time when I was in elementary school. Then I stoped in middle school when teachers started to force books on us I didn't like. By the end of high school I took a class that gave us the choice to pick our own books. From their I became a hard core bookworm.

Kayla (kaylahines22) | 4 comments I liked to read for awhile when I was in middle school but then I guess I got uninterested when I got to high school. But what recently got me back into reading was The Hunger Games books and then I read the 50 shades of Grey books and that's what got me to like contemporary romance books =)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 72 comments I can't remember how young I was, it's way too far back, but the earliest books I recall reading are Hop on Pop by Dr. Seuss One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss . I then recall reading Hagar the horrible comics for a time. I went away from reading for a while, until I discovered Piers Anthony's "Incarnations of Imortality" series. I've had at least one book constantly on the go ever since :D

I still have the original Dr Seuss books, read them to my children when they were young, and have shelved them ready for the next generation: Not for a good few years yet, hopefuly.
