Greg | 1651 comments In 2011, I posted a topic about tracking the short fiction you read in magazines and online - and so are not listed as 'books' on GR. It's also handy for recording that sole story or novella that you read in an anthology but not never got around to reading the rest of the book! Anyway, although I forgot to follow it up with one for 2012 I thought it might be worth posting a new topic for 2013. Feel free to book your spot in the topic for recording your short story reads!

I agree. I think some authors are better short-story writers than they are novelists but it can work the other way round too, of course!

Count me in!

I love short stories.

message 7: by Ardy (new)

Ardy Ardy (ardybooks) | 1657 comments Reading through Skeleton Crew by Stephen King. He's one of those authors whose novels are amazing, but he is a master of the short story.

message 8: by Greg (new)

Greg | 1651 comments Having just read the online excerpt of a book, I figure that it merits listing among my short fiction reads of the year.

Todd Russell (toddrussell) | 118 comments Historically I haven't been very good about tracking the short fiction I've read, but will save this spot just in case...

It's handy for recording those odds and ends that just don't amount to a book. Ideally, many ebooks should go here too as they are just short stories but GR calls them 'books'.

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 964 comments Since I am fairly new at this, can someone tell me how to save a spot on the thread? I know that might sound like a stupid question, but humor me, please; it's my first time.

message 13: by Greg (new)

Greg | 1651 comments You just did by posting in the thread, Adam! :)

message 14: by Greg (new)

Greg | 1651 comments All you need to do is edit your first post (message 12 in the thread) each time you want to add a new short story that you've read.

message 15: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 964 comments Okay, the edit your first post part was where I was challenged, Greg. Thanks for clarifying. I've never been too involved in posting on threads. Better late than never, I guess.

message 18: by Greg (new)

Greg | 1651 comments I'll probably dip into - and out of - the copy of Analog Science Fiction and Fact, July/August 2011 over the next few months, but having finished its novella yesterday, I've added it to the list above.

message 19: by Greg (new)

Greg | 1651 comments If it were still available on Goodreads, where I'd originally found it in 2011, I'd probably be able to link to it as a 'book' but since it's no longer online (I'd printed off a copy the same month it was uploasded to GR), I'll add it here.

The story is 'Beware the Death Angel' and is from Jason Brannon's short-story collection The Misunderstood and Other Misfit Horrors.

I started out the year shooting for 365 (i.e., one story a day). At my current rate it looks as if I'm going to fall short, but I think I can still reach 300.

I was planning on posting my list from the first half of the year sometime soon.

Greg | 1651 comments A story a day is a good challenge! I might try that myself next year.

Impressive. :)
Do you have a page limit on what you consider a short story? This is a very cool goal. And I might do something similar myself in '14. Good idea!

I admit to not thinking all that deeply about these sorts of categorizations, Traci. In fact, it would probably be more apt to refer to my list as including short stories, novelettes, and novellas as opposed to just stories. Typically, anything under 7.5K words is considered a short story; between 7.5K and 17.5K words, a novelette; between 17.5K and 40K words, a novella; and, of course, anything over 40K words, a novel. But I've seen works far in excess of 40K called a novella as opposed to a novel. A lot seems to depend on packaging. Stephen King's "The Mist" is a good example. It weighs in at a fairly hefty 51K words, yet is usually referred to as a novella -- probably because it has usually been packaged with other works of relatively short fiction rather than as a stand-alone book.

Yeah, I started out the year a bit slowly, but picked up steam during the last few months. To be totally honest, this really was not that hard a goal — especially for someone like me who loves short fiction. For the most part these stories were read one or two at a crack, often during my lunch break.

Greg | 1651 comments I used to read more short fiction in the past. Due to research and other commitments, I don't get to read for pleasure as much as I would like. But some of the ebooks I've added to my read list are really short stories or novelettes - if GR didn't consider them 'books', I'd add them here.

I find Goodreads' treatment of short stories to be kind of weird. Their stance seems to be that if something is issued separately in print or in some electronic format, then it merits a separate entry and is considered to be a "book" (whatever the heck that means), regardless of its length. So Charlotte Perkins Gilman's 6000-word story, "The Yellow Wallpaper", is somehow considered a book.

I typically do the opposite of what you do, Greg. If something is a novelette length or shorter, then it gets added to my personally-maintained list of short fiction that I've read. When it comes to novellas, I'm probably a bit inconsistent in how I treat them — in part because I don't always know the word count of specific works. Not that any of this matters all that much. ;)
