A murder unsolved for 30 years. A small town community. A returning local boy made good.

Think Val McDermid mixed with Elizabeth George and you'll have got the vibe of this mystery thriller that leaves you unprepared for the shattering conclusion.

When highly esteemed television journalist Danny Holdsworth returns to his home town it is, ostensibly, to take over as editor for a year of the local paper. But he has an ulterior motive.

Thirty years ago Danny left town after the murder of his best friend Nigel Slater. They'd been due to go off to university together, Danny to read English, and Nigel to read law. They were going to share a flat and get jobs in a bar or pub. But why would someone want to stop Nigel, literally, dead in his tracks?

Danny was suspected of the murder at the time and the stress of that caused his Aunt Joyce, the woman who'd brought him up since he'd been abandoned by his mother when he was eight years old, to have a fatal heart attack. Joyce wasn't his real Aunt. She'd been his mother's best friend. But why had Danny's blood relations turned their backs on him after his mother left? Why did they never even send him a card on his birthday?

And why, thirty years later, does a now retired local police officer remain convinced that Danny did kill Nigel Slater?

Coming back Danny runs into his old flame, Caroline, the girl he'd been engaged to before he understood that he was homosexual. She's trapped in an unhappy marriage to Danny's old childhood nemisis, Ben Reynolds, a man who is so desperate to save his rapidly failing haulage business that he gets involved in an illegal trade involving Russian mafia type business associates.

But Danny can't give Caroline the love she needs.

He gives it instead to her grown up son, Luke. And she's not pleased.

But Caroline is also hiding a secret that could devastate Danny. She knows the truth about the death of his Aunt Joyce all those years ago.

A surprise visit from his estranged mother leads Danny to discover some very unpleasant truths about Nigel Slater's murder that have a direct connection with his own identity.

The knowledge leaves his him with his soul shaken.

He's spent half his life wondering just who he was. Now he's going to spend the rest of it wishing he didn't know.

And wishing you all a very merry Christmas!
