I believe there were several books in a series that I used to check out from the library when I was young. They were probably from the 70s-80s, but I'm not sure. The protagonist was an alien (although maybe referred to as a martian or a spaceman) who travelled to different planets, maybe had a dog as a companion? Name possibly Martin or Marvin (no relation to the WB character). I remember his demeanor as being fairly pessimistic, and at one point he was caught by an antagonist. Short books, not YA.

Could this be the Matthew Looney books by Jerome Beatty? He was from the moon, and I think he had a dog.
