Catherine | 728 comments Sorry guys.....been soooo busy and tired. I finally went with Nora Roberts...Catching Fire

15 points (Susan found this one for me). Thanks Susan

Review....well..I do love a good romance, an Nora Roberts certainly does know how to weave a good story. I will try to expand on this later :)

So....I can't even imagine running or jumping into a fire! I am all for an adreniline rush..but WOW! What incredible bravery......and when your job entails such intense emotion....I think I would probably crumple! Nora Roberts let's us see into something so emotionally intense...it is hard to put down! This was the first Nora Roberts novel for me..that I can recall..but I am certainly going to read others!

message 314: by Susan (susayq ~), Moderator (new)

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 6062 comments Jennifer, that sounds good. I considered that one, but I ended up Going with Starcrossed cause I need it for something else. I've gotten a bit of reading in today while on campus and I have to admit I really like it. I haven't enjoyed the last few YA books I've read but this one is good.

BTW, still not home to change the link lol but I haven't forgotten.

I decided to read the sequel Love is Fear as well ( as I'll get 2 more points for it) but here's my review for Love is Fear. Basically, I'm thinking this is definitely an 'introductory book'. It's got a few new twists but the characters are still a bit 'uni-dimensional and uni-focused' (but I'd give it a pass for being a first book). There's a fair number of 'open threads' and most definitely not even a HFN at the end.

message 323: by Manvir (new)

Manvir (lucyheartfilia) Thanks Damiellar I just read your review. I'll add it but I'm not sure when I'll get around to it. I'm usually pretty forgiving to first in series books too. If I wasn't I might not have continued with some of the series that I love now.

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness :Shelf(1)+Title(4)+Cover(2)+Plot(3)+Setting(6)=16 points (I think some others are reading this)

A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire, #2) by George R.R. Martin : Shelf(1)+Plot?(3)=4 points

Seraphina (Seraphina, #1) by Rachel Hartman :Shelf(1)+cover(2)+Plot(3)=6 points

The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making (Fairyland, #1) by Catherynne M. Valente :Shelf(1)+Cover(2)+Plot(3)+Setting(6)=12 points

Dami (Damiellar) (damiella) | 97 comments Book:
Love is Fear - Caroline Hanson
Love is Fear (Valerie Dearborn, #2) by Caroline Hanson
Rating: ★★★
Finished: 3-Feb-2013

Review:

I must admit that I found Val a bit annoying in this book. She just seemed to be at the mercy of her emotions and acted without thought of consequences. Yes she's an empath but that only excuses so much. I think it got a bit over the top. Then again, it is a bit of a stressful, event-packed time for her and she isn't exactly being fed the full picture by anyone. I don't think it quite excuses these actions in someone who's in their early 20s, late teens possibly, but she should have been a touch more mature.

Regardless I enjoyed this quite a lot and will definitely be reading the final book in this series (I'm interested to see how things resolve). It's not a 'omg-have-to-download-this-naoh' series but it's still on the list.

Links:

SHELF - on Magical Creatures shelf
PLOT - Val has recently been told that she's an empath (so only slightly human) and as a result vampires (and fey when they see her) want her to use. This matches the video with the fighting of monsters.

She's also being kept confused by everyone around her as no-one's telling her the full story either for their own ends, or to 'protect' her (in the case of Jack)
This matches the lyrics
'Some days I don't know if I am wrong or right
Your mind is playing tricks on you, my dear

'Cause though the truth may vary'

SETTING - Song and book were both released in 2011.
WORD - 'stomp': He stomp ed past her, up the landing to his doo, opening that too. - Kindle location 6703

Individual points: Shelf (1) + Plot (3) + Setting (6) + Word (1) = 11 points

Christal | 90 comments I wasn't able to get A Monster Calls from my library so I just did a re-read of First Grave on the Right since I've been out of town all week.

First Grave on the Right (Charley Davidson, #1) by Darynda Jones
Title by Author: First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones
Read: 2/5/2013
Rating: ★★★☆☆
Review:
I read this about a year ago and I have to say this book held up better in the re-read that it did on my initial read. I wasn't as annoyed with Charlie's perpetual humor this time around. I think the world Ms. Jones has created is very fun, but I still don't know if I will continue on to the other books or not.

Song Links:
Shelf - Magical Creatures (1)
Plot - Charlie has the ability to see ghosts but she doesn't tell anyone because they would think she is crazy (3)
Setting - Published in 2011 (6)
Word - Stomped (Page 249 - I stood my ground, refused to budge, stomped my foot...] (1)

Catherine | 728 comments so..finished :)

Book: Timeless..Gail Carriger

Review: I have enjoyed this series thoroughly....it was entertaining.. I got a good chortle from the antics of the characters muddling through lifes pitfalls. the fact that werewolves and vampires were brought together and became strange "bedfellows" made it all the more humourous....because they are rather in opposition normally..I am sorry that there are no more books to come...I would love to see what would happen in a few years time...because of the "new breed" of creature that was created.

Links:
Plot: Vampires and Werewolves in almost constant dissagreement...which brings the one person who can cancel ot hteir powers. Also...the characters go on a quest of sorts..to Egypt.. to figure out what is behind the abilities of the "new" creature, and to get there they travel by ship.
Magical Creatures: Werewolves, Vampires, Preternatural and mixed breed creature(werewolf/pretunatural), and mummies
Setting: the characters travel by ship on their voyage
