SOLVED. set in maybe victorian/jack the ripper times? about blood transfusions.fiction book [s]

Cant remember much, set when everything's quite dark with dull streetlamps etc. cobbled streets. The story has something to do with blood transfusions maybe a vampire and there's a woman in it too.
That's all i've got, probably published before 2008, borrowed from English teacher 3/4 years ago.
