Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments What is the longest book you have ever read? Does page amount matter to you when picking out books? I don't like really long books because they'll most likely get boring before the end of the book. Other times I want to get long books. (I feel like when I get a book with a lot of pages I am getting more for my money!)

The longest book I have ever read would probably have to be Insurgent (Divergent, #2) by Veronica Roth which I believe was 525 pages.

message 2: by Jordan (new)

Jordan (jords) | 415 comments The longest book I've read was probably one of the Harry Potters which are around 700/800 pages. however the amount of pages never bothers me when choosing as if the book sounds really good I prefer it to be longer as I get to delve into the characters lives for longer

Yeah I agree.. Most long books get boring after awhile and I find that I don't focus as much as I would have with a shorter book. Although like Jacquelyn said, I do feel like I get more for my money. And don't get me wrong, I have read a good amount of really good books that are big. Although, I do prefer shorter books.

The longest book I have read was Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter, #5, Part 1) by J.K. Rowling which was 766 pages in the hardcover edition.

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments All are very, very long books! Jordan- that's a great point, you get to be in the characters lives for longer and you get to know them more!

I came up with this topic while looking up the longest book known to history. One book came up and it was over 4,000 pages and over 1,000,000 words! It was in the Guinness World Records Book for being the longest book in history!

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh my gosh. I don't think I could ever read a book that long unless it was the best book in history. I just don't think I could do it.. Lol

message 7: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments I know right! I don't even know how the author could write that many pages (and words!) how could they possibly have so many characters, scenes, etc. Imagine having to do a book report on that book and they made you write a summary! LOL!

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

I can't imagine! That would take me forever to a) read the book and then b) write a book review! It surely cannot be done. Lol

Tayla Potayta (taylapotayta) | 1594 comments I read City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare City of Glass (The Mortal Instruments, #3) by Cassandra Clare City of Ashes (The Mortal Instruments, #2) by Cassandra Clare City of Fallen Angels (The Mortal Instruments, #4) by Cassandra Clare back to back in about a week or two. so it all seems like the same book to me xD

message 11: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Haha, well if you put them together they would add up to around 1000 pages!!

message 12: by Tayla (new)

Tayla Potayta (taylapotayta) | 1594 comments plus i have no idea what happens in each book. like the city of bones movie is coming out and everyone is talking about magnus.. i didnt even think he was in that book. i feel like i forget them all haha

message 13: by Trisha, lives on coffee (last edited Dec 16, 2012 01:13PM) (new)

Trisha | 30284 comments I've read Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy (976 pages), The Stand by Stephen King (1153 pages) and It by Stephen King (1090 pages). I think they were probably my longest books.

I recently tried to get through War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy (1392 pages) but had to put it on hold for challenges/buddy reading. I'll get to it though....

I think I've read almost all of Stephen King's books and, so far, he's really the only author that can write a long book and keep my attention and have me wish there were still more pages..... :)

message 14: by Jalyn (new)

Jalyn (jalynnie) I read the uncut version of The Stand by Stephen King with 1153 pages. I also read Under the Dome by Stephen King with 1072 pages.

message 16: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Wow! Jalyn and Trisha, all of those are humongous books! How long did it take each of you to read those books? (if you know!)

message 17: by Trisha, lives on coffee (new)

Trisha | 30284 comments the stand and It each took me maybe a week. I just devoured them! but that was when I read all just Stephen King.

Anna Karenina took me quite a while, months...because I really dislike the book...I just read like 35 or 40 pages a day and just made myself pick it up every day.

message 18: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Only a week?! Believe me, you are a reading machine! I love how even though you disliked the book you made yourself finish it! That's determination right there!!

message 19: by Gisbelle (new)

Gisbelle | 25787 comments I think Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter #5) by J.K. Rowling . It was 870. I read and listened to the audiobook at the same time.

lol... Thanks for the heads up :)

message 25: by Jalyn (new)

Jalyn (jalynnie) Trisha, I went through about 3 years where all I read was King and Koontz. I really liked Under the Dome. It isn't as scary as some of his other ones, but I flew through it :)

Jacquelyn, I think it took me two weeks to read The Stand, about the same for It (I forgot to add that one) and maybe 4 or 5 days for Under the Dome. I couldn't put that one down :)

11/22/63 was awesome!

Here are some of my longest novels (not counting series) which all happen to be Stephen King. :) And I've read them all multiple times! In my opinion, the longer the better. When I arrive at the bookstore and I see that the one I'm going for is gigantic it's almost a feeling of exultation that passes through me, ha ha.

The Stand: 1,153 pages
It: 1,138 pages
Under the Dome: 1,072 pages
11/22/63: 849 pages
Insomnia: 787 pages
Desperation: 690 pages
Needful Things: 690 pages
Dreamcatcher: 620 pages
Duma Key: 607 pages
The Tommyknockers: 558 pages
Bag of Bones: 529 pages

Yeah I'm a wee bit obsessed, ha ha. I've read all of his books multiple times. And I have a tattoo from the fifth book in his Dark Tower series on my right wrist!

And The Shining is an awesome book. The movie just butchered it completely. I remember watching it and being super upset when I was 14 and having to wait until I was about 21 or 22 I think to watch it again until I could really appreciate it. Because Jack Nicholson is awesome as well lol.

message 41: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiehodgkinson) Pretty sure mine is
A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1) by George R.R. Martin
Although, I bought the entire box set so I'm sure that record will be broken at some point in my life as I'm pretty sure one of the other books is longer! It was that big of a book I couldn't read it all in one go - I got half way through it and just read a couple of books and went back to it afterwards and I never do that with books.

Yoly | 642 comments I think The Lord of the rings (the trilogy), The Millenium Trilogy, The Harry Potter´s series and I´m in the middle of the Song of ice of fire´s series (I read 3 of the 5 books).

And if you think just in one book, it would be "Les Misérables".

message 50: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 4527 comments The longest book I have ever read was the unabridged version of Les Miserables at 1463 pages.
