Olching is just outside of Munich, so it's 100-150km from Regensburg. I'm glad you enjoyed it here!

Alana (alanasbooks) | 101 comments Ok, it didn't sound like anywhere I'd visited, but wasn't sure. I did enjoy it very much, was my favorite part of Europe, and I've been all over. Such friendly people!

Kirsten (kmcripn) I have only found one series of books set in my locale. Patricia Briggs' Mercedes Thompson series is set in the Tri-Cities area of Washington State. They are very good. But I hardly have a wide array of books to choose from.

Alana (alanasbooks) | 101 comments Kirsten where in the Tri-Cities do you live? I used to live in Prosser, but we did shopping in Kennewick and the guy who rented our pasture for his horses was in Pasco, so we were out there sometimes.

Hi Amy, sorry for the delay in responding, I didn't get a notification for this discussion.thank you for the recommendation!

I read a Wally Lamb: She's Come Undone, I wasn't crazy about it. I think that some of it took place in RI.

Cool. Yeah, I don't know of a lot of other books in that area, either. Lots in Seattle, not so many on the eastern side.

Local author, Margaret Dickinson, sets most of her books in the county of Lincolnshire, England. They are historical fiction, love stories, tales of local folk, well researched and enjoyable reads. "Wish Me Luck" is set in WW2 at the air field just down the road from me.

R.L. Stedman | 21 comments I live in New Zealand. There are many great writers here. Geographically NZ is very diverse, and as the landscape profoundly influences the stories we tell its very hard to pick one (or even two) that represent the country. I like the way the US readers have, of picking a book that represents the STATE. much easier.

Anyway here's three that I have enjoyed and can relate to as being very Kiwi.

The Bone People by Keri Hulme - set in the West Coast of the South Island, it won the Booker Prize many years ago.
Under the Mountain by Maurice Gee - a classic children's story, set in Auckland.
When Gravity Snaps Short Stories by Owen Marshall - short stories, set in Canterbury, South Island.

Missi | 1 comments A fun quick read "A Cadger's Curse" Diane Gilbert Madsen, is set in the suburbs that surround my home outside of Chicago, Illinois. It was fun to follow a strong female character solve a mystery blocks from my home. It will never be a literary master piece but it is a fun read. "The Devil in the White City" Erik Larson follows the life and times of a Chicago serial killer, the jack the ripper of Chicago's meat packing district, a zillion years ago. Great feed, I love supporting local writers, creativity is such a gift.

Chrisl (chrisl2) Ellen Bishop's gem
In Search of Ancient Oregon: A Geological and Natural History

If you don't know about Oregon's terranes, as a travel advisor, this is my top choice for learning about Oregon's geography and geology. Many beautiful pictures from places where my camera likes to visit.

Oregon Archeology
Oregon Archaeology

The oldest human evidence in Oregon has been dated to 14,500 years ago in Paisley Cave in Oregon's high desert country southeast of the best known dry side part of the state, the resort city of Bend.

Tesa Fiona (tesafiona) | 4 comments Hi, I live in North Karelia, Finland, the city is called Joensuu. I am not sure if there's a book set in here, anyway, a major city nearby is Tampere. And the book trilogy by Väinö Linna, Under the North Star is a great one, located in a county near Tampere called Pentti's corner.
This trilogy is also considered as one of Finnish successful literature.

Sehada | 2 comments I survived the Bosnian war in Sarajevo. "Twice Born" is amazingly authentic picture of those years and the experience. AND the author wasn't even Bosnian and has not been in the war. Just brilliant!

message 72: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn Sheda..have you read Scott Simon's "Little Bird?" It is shattering and might be hard for you to read but it certainly puts one right in the middle of the war in Sarajevo. Reading it is not pretending you know about war but makes you understand the suffering and the insanity. I had many visits to the former Yugoslavia during the war. I love the country and the people so much. I will read "Twice Born" and look for any other recomendations you have.

message 73: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn I am a 6th generation Oregonian weaned on a library of Oregon books. We traveled with "Oregon Geographic Names" in the car when I was a kid. But ask me what book tells the best Oregon story and I will shove you towards "The Sisters Brothers" by Patrick de Witt. It was shortlisted for the Booker.

message 74: by Sehada (new)

Sehada | 2 comments Kathryn, thanks for kind words! I believe the book is called Pretty Birds, and I've red it. Yes, it was a good book, but when you actually live through that ordeal, these kinds of books can not even scrach the surface of true emotions. It's all like "Eh, so what?" It' s the same for the book "The cellist of Sarajevo."Twice born" is not actually a story about Sarajevo, but the parts of the book that touch those war years in Sarajevo are not only so authentic and so well done, but I felt I personally new the characters and someone recorded my own dialogs with them. I hope you will like the book :)

message 75: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn Thanks, Sheda. I am glad you corrected the title and gave me your perspective. I have heard so many stories from the war but as close as I got was being in the Beograd Hyatt when NATO bombed. I hope I never have to truly know the experience you had.
