Pat, I've looked at your "next-up" shelf, and there was only one book that I have read, so I'm going to go ahead and suggest that one, The Host.

But besides that I'm going to pick out another two so you can have a choice. Hopeless because her other books are AMAZING. As well as, Wicked Nights because it will be a new year, so start a new series.
