I don't like books like that when the rapist gets some kind of sob story as to why he is a rapist. I don't want any author trying to make me feel sorry for some creepy ass rapist asshole

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 200 comments I'm working on Live and Let Love. It's fun contemporary/romantic suspense with a hero who is a spy. He was blown up and had to get plastic surgery, which changed his features. He had to let his wife think he was dead to save her life, and now he's back in her life as someone else to protect her from an assassin out to get him. Good stuff!

Also listening to The Case for Christ on audio.

LaVerne (lavernethompson) | 5 comments It's not an IR but a sci/fi it's okay, I'm a fan of Kaitlyn O'Connor. Sleeping with the Enemy by Kaitlyn O'Connor

message 6: by lexicondst (new)

lexicondst | 5 comments Just finishing Lady of Devices and Her Own Devices, which were steampunky romances. I was hoping for IR and a little smuttier, but they were okay.

Is there a thread about IR steampunk romances with an AA heroine?

message 7: by Cf (last edited Dec 11, 2012 09:57AM) (new)

Cf I am currently devouring all of Beverly Jenkins books. I love her African American Historical Fiction featured in Kansas. I need a break from Paranormal Romance which is predictable and monotonous no matter who the author is.

I am reading The Raven Boys (Raven Cycle, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater the Raven Boys by Maggie Steifvater and Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King Full Dark No Stars by Stephen King, topped off with Black Butler, Vol. 1 by Yana Toboso by Yana Toboso. I am reading that because I read some of it in Yen Plus. The art is so nice! I wonder does Yana draw on computer or paper first...

I am also reading A Man of Few Words by Stephen L. Thompson A Man of Few Words by Stephen Thompson. My god, that book is lovely. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT~! I think it fell from heaven. I am also reading The Book of Deacon (The Book of Deacon, #1) by Joseph Lallo The Book of Deacon by Joseph Lallo. Although I haven't started it yet. I heard of him through Smashwords and got the book for free on Amazon. 179 positive reviews, it must be good.

I also snagged xxxHolic, Volume 1 (xxxHolic, #1) by CLAMP xxxHOLIC by Clamp.

Has anyone read WOOL?

message 15: by L'Poni (new)

L'Poni (lponi) | 41 comments I'll probably never finish them all because they're novels (except Man of Few Words and Black Butler. I also read Crank (Crank, #1) by Ellen Hopkins Crank by Ellen Hopkins. As a poetry reader, I loved that book so much! I tried reading Impulse (Impulse, #1) by Ellen Hopkins Impulse, but it felt too much like a novel. I recommend Crank to everypony here!

I'm going to read some shorter historical romances that I bought earlier this year, but haven't read, yet. I've already surpassed my goal for the year, and I don't want to start anything that's too long before the start of 2013 and the next Book Challenge.

The FountainPenDiva, Old school geek chick and lover of teddy bears (thefountainpendiva) | 157 comments @L'Poni: I didn't know you were a manga fan. I LOVE XXXHolic and Tsubasa! Have you watched either series?

I've made it a point for this year and all the next to read as many YA book with diverse characters as possible. So far this month I've read and enjoyed A Spy in the House by Y.S. Lee and My Own Worst Frenemy (Langdon Prep #1) by Kimberly Reid . I'm in the middle of The Body at the Tower by Y.S. Lee .

Of course I love Anime and manga!!! :) I've been reading and watching it for years. My very first was Rozen Maiden. Such good memories! Without anime, Dragons and Cicadas would not have developed so beautifully.

I have yet to see the anime version of XXHolic. I used to watch Tsubasa on tv in my younger days. Have you seen Black Butler/Kuroshitsuji? I highly recommend you watch Code Geass and Rozen Maiden. I cant speak yet for Kuroshitsuji because Ive only seen 3 episodes of season 1 and season 2 is still sinking into my brain (I saw it a few weeks ago. It was like watching Rob Zombie's Halloween). I also heavily recommend GUNSLINGER GIRL!

Maximum Ride is the only manga I've read that seems to have a black character (not counting Nightschool and Minor Acts of Heroism). I know there's a few more but I can't call 'em (not including my characters).

I thought everyone knew I was an anime geek. I think my profile needs updating.

Here's the omnibus editions of Gunslinger Girl: Gunslinger Girl Omnibus 1 by Yu Aida Gunslinger Girl Omnibus 2 by Yu Aida Gunslinger Girl Omnibus 3 by Yu Aida Gunslinger Girl Omnibus 4 by Yu Aida Gunslinger Girl Omnibus 5 by Yu Aida Gunslinger Girl Omnibus 6 by Yu Aida

If NCIS Los Angeles (or The Italian Job (or some heavily dramatic low-action movie) married Charlie's Angels the kid would be chapter 80-99 of Gunslinger Girl. It's like Ender's Game on Gandalf's steroids. That's the best comparison I can make at the moment.

Kuroshitsuji (the manga) is like The Raven Boys meets Dorian Gray (I'm sure that's way off). However, the second season (Kuroshitsuji 2)...let's say if Brokeback Mountain (or Rob Zombie's Halloween) married Magic Mike...the offspring would be Kuroshitsuji 2. That's how awful it felt to me (but for some reason I kinda liked it, but it seriously deviated from the manga).

The FountainPenDiva, Old school geek chick and lover of teddy bears (thefountainpendiva) | 157 comments I tend to gravitate towards more what I'd probably consider adult/story-driven anime and manga such as Last Exile (OMG such gorgeous artwork by Range Murata). If you're into Steampunk it's a great series. I also love Ergo Proxy, Le Chevalier d'Eon 1 by Kiriko Yumeji --a MUST if you're into history since it's set in the days before the French Revolution, Technolyze, Black Lagoon (Revy rocks) and more shojo-type series like Paradise Kiss Paradise Kiss, Volume 1 by Ai Yazawa and Emma.

And yes, I love my BL/yaoi, especially Let Dai Volume 1 by Sooyeon Won . See my review of this before you read it because it's pretty dark, but oh wow it's really good and the artwork is some of the best out there.

I've known of Range Murata for a long time! I'd love to buy his Robot books. And Gunslinger Girl is very story driven, I really suggest you try it. And I LOVE Ergo Proxy! I have the theme song on my little iPod device. I try to stay away from Shojo manga, but I have read some pretty good ones (Kiss For My Prince being one of them). I've heard a lot of good things about L'Chevalier and Paradise Kiss, thank you for recommending those. I read your review of Let Dai and I am a little bit interested. It sounds like one of those tragic films where (to quote Patrick Star from Spongebob) "everyone dies in the end." Almost like Cloud Atlas.

Here's a link for the first chapter of GG: http://www.citymanga.com/gunslinger_g...

The art gets better as the series progresses.

The FountainPenDiva, Old school geek chick and lover of teddy bears (thefountainpendiva) | 157 comments I'll definitely give GG a shot. Thanks so much for the rec! ParaKiss was actually very good for shojo (and it featured a transgendered character named Isabella whom I loved and always wanted a happy ending for, LOL). Emma was great because it was set in the Victorian era, which I love!

Oh and I have Ergo Proxy on my phone too. I love the theme for that series and for Last Exile. If you haven't heard Shontaro Okino, he's great. Cloud Age Symphony is just awesome! By the way, are you a J-Rock/VK fan too *the Fountain Pen Diva hopes, lol*

If by Visual Kei you mean ALI PROJECT and Yousei Teikoku....YES!!! And for J-Pop, does Namie Amuro and Koda Kumi count? I haven't really taken genres into consideration so I don't really know what traditional J-pop sounds like.

message 25: by Ezi (new)

Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) Deva,
did you read Nightbred (Lords of the Darkyn, #2) by Lynn Viehl ?
I just finished it...I miss Alex & her brother John Keller. I was really hoping the author would go back and deal with their parentage since she started the series by letting us know they were biracial. But i guess the publishers don't want to talk about that plot anymore.

Visual Kei would be bands like Versailles (though I really think they're more metal), The Gazette, Phantasmagoria, Moi dix Mois, Rentrer en Soi and Matenrou Opera just to name a few. There's also ExistTrace, an all-female Visual Kei band. J-Pop is more Kumi Koda and Ali Project and Gackt (though he's definitely got a rock edge).

I heard of Moi Dix Moi. They were with Yousei Teikoku. I dont think Ali Pro is J-Pop. They are more progressive rock and neo classical but their styles change (their song Platonic and Ikeru Oujo Shouzouga and Sengoku Girl are wonderful). I wish I had some time to listen to the bands you mentioned. What Ali Project songs have you listened to?
