That picture is insane!

The school run was, erm, interesting today, with horizontal icy rain. Five minutes later, blue sky and sun.

Some friends by the Thames are flooded out.

message 552: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) She's been staying with us for a few days whilst builders repaired the roof. Went home yesterday and storm hit this morning, again.

No flooding here, yet, but rivers are all very high. Sleet tomorrow apparently and more storms on Friday and weekend.

message 553: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) That photo is terrifying.

Shirley | 82 comments It's still pretty nasty weather up here in Lancashire, just hope it all dies down soon!

message 555: by Sandy (new)

Sandy | 458 comments Whoa, what a picture! Be safe everyone. Here in Northern Midwest US bitterly cold. -21 C this morning. It was beautiful this am. Foggy with ice crystals on the trees and a pink sunrise - surreal. At least six feet of snow in front of my house.

message 556: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) I can't envisage having to cope with those temperatures and that much snow Sandy. How on earth are you managing? I don't mind a bit of snow, but 6 feet? That's awful.

I saw the news last night. All the storms - your snow in America and our rain are all the same storm. If our rain had been snow I think we would have had about as you have had.

I saw the reports of the storm hitting Blackpool yesterday. That was ferocious. If anyone on here is there, keep safe. I hope these storms pass soon.

US storm big news here, and they had a terrible time in Tokyo as well.

That photo is extraordinary. I saw it somewhere else, possibly BBC website, and when they comment that they barricaded the downstairs, but the water still came in at the third floor and down through the roof and ceiling, then you really can't fathom what that must be like.

Sandy | 458 comments Happy Valentine's Day! I went out to dinner with my husband. I bought him a new scarf and made him an angel food cake. Simple pleasures.

message 560: by Sandy (new)

Sandy | 458 comments Snowing again today. I can hear several hundred birds in the woods outside my house. It's spring right?

message 561: by Paul (new)

Paul (halfmanhalfbook) | 5463 comments Mod
Snow?!?! Wow. Just drizzle here which is a bit depressing

message 562: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (debbiegregory) | 585 comments It's like spring break for birds here in Epping Forest. They're a tad excited for some reason. x

I think it's lovely that you have a board for chit-chatting. :)

Jo Weston (joster) | 1697 comments Mod
Snow? what is that? Not a flake this winter in East Anglia. Plenty of wild hail/thunder type stuff though.... lots of birds in the morning now, which I really like. Spring has almost sprung.

message 565: by Sandy (new)

Sandy | 458 comments I can't wait to plant my garden, walk without freezing and see the sun. My dad and I are planning our gardens, and looking at seed catalogs to keep motivated.

message 566: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) The dawn chorus has been starting around 2am in our garden. Quite disconcerting! It's still dark, and they're singing away. Lovely to hear, but a bit early :D.

They have been investigating the nest boxes. We had robins nesting last year. Would love them to come back.

Hadn't heard the dawn chorus, just woken at 5.45 by the seven year old...

message 568: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) I can beat that, Paul. 5.30am is normal wake up time for my 4 year old son!

Book. Of course.

message 573: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) Urghh, don't mention pigeons! There's a huge flock of woodpigeons living in the woods on the riverbank about 5 mins walk from our house. They invade the gardens, raid the birdfeeders, divebomb the washing line and make a general nuisance of themselves :D I need a shotgun!!!

message 574: by Pat (new)

Pat Morris-jones | 1373 comments I do have a soft spot for wood pigeons. Only because they were birds I remember hearing throughout my childhood in large city. They used to call in the morning as I lay in bed. Prob. awful birds but just nice memories. They didn't live in a wood though. Only a city, small, garden

I am referreing the little people while my wife is in London seeing her father collect his MBE tomorrow

message 576: by Jo (new)

Jo Weston (joster) | 1697 comments Mod
Paul, we break up tomorrow, so the refereeing starts in earnest here then! Already had one "yes you did no you didn't" with tears tonight. Tired methinks.

How exciting about the MBE tomorrow, do you know who is conducting the ceremony?

message 577: by Paul (new)

Paul (halfmanhalfbook) | 5463 comments Mod
No idea at the moment. Will find out tomorrow

message 578: by Sandy (new)

Sandy | 458 comments I think the birds I'm hearing are a type of black bird. We also have woodpeckers, cardinals and blue jays flying about. Occasionally we have a large bird that looks like a blue heron land in our pond. They start early and are so loud.

message 579: by [deleted user] (new)

I just told my daughter about the Hitchcock film - we saw a HUGE flock of seagulls today in an inner city neighbourhood and it was a little unsettling. It's still winter here. Of course. We don't really get a spring - we go straight into summer.

message 580: by Sandy (new)

Sandy | 458 comments I always think of Hitchcock's The Birds this time of year. Our trees are covered - unnerving. I haven't been attacked yet! :)

message 581: by Anna (new)

Anna (justanna) | 145 comments Up early here (that'll be the husband's snoring!!) and the birds are singing away.

Do love birds, I'd be a twitcher if I had a decent memory and could recall more than a handful of species!!!

I saw I love birds I have to confess to know being that fond of pigeons. Though did you know they can recall human faces?

message 582: by Lisa (last edited Mar 28, 2014 01:41AM) (new)

Lisa (mrswhams) | 730 comments Mod
That's eerie, Anna!

In a London city garden near a park and the wood pigeons are frequent visitors. They don't bother me too much except one day last summer I'd left the back door open and was feeding the baby in the living room and a pigeon wandered in, bold as brass! I let out a scream and panicked a bit wondering how to get it out while it sat in the window gurning at passers-by!

Squirrels come in all the time too and they DO annoy me by raiding the birdfeeders.

The funniest part is at the bottom:

The Penguin Now! list is also set to be supplemented by a range of corresponding audiobooks, read by Brian Blessed.

message 591: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) Hilarious. Brian Blessed, indeed .... known in our house as Grampy Rabbit (Peppa Pig), the lighthouse keeper. His rendition of "FOG" leaves my children giggling helplessly. No need of a megaphone there....
