In most cases, I always find the books more interesting to explore than movies because I can understand the characters and their emotions more intently. However, I appreciate the movies because in some other way they give me more concrete basis on the settings and characters that was on the book. There is just this particular series that I used to like more in the movies than in the book, which is Narnia. The movie version has shown more life and adventure that there are no dull moments. The book series is still a good one though. :)

message 248: by Moon Rose (M.R.) (new)

Moon Rose (M.R.) (verhonica_myrrh) | 5 comments Hi! I'm Moon from Manila, Philippines. I have read several selections from Oprah's Book Club in the past like She's Come Undone, I Know This Much is True, House of Sand and Fog, One Hundred Years of Solitude, Anna Karenina, The Good Earth, The Good Earth, As I Lay Dying, A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose and most especially, The Pillars of the Earth, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, three selections that are included in my all time fave books.

What is your favorite book or author?

Aside from the aforementioned works by Charles Dickens and Ken Follett above, I also love Dickens' David Copperfield and Follett's sequel to The Pillars of the Earth, World Without End.

I'm also into European literature, Russian particularly as books written by Fyodor Dostoyevsky like Demons, The Brothers Karamazov, Crime and Punishment and Leo Tolstoy's The Kingdom of God Is Within You moved me into a higher plane I never thought possible, great examples of literature's transformative power to reform one's consciousness.

As a young reader, I was easily swept away in the moors of England with Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights, at the same time, transported into the provincial town of Middlemarch by George Eliot.

I'm also impressed with the contemporary Japanese writer, Haruki Murakami. His works like The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and Kafka on the Shore provide the audience an alternative storytelling style never been sought as eloquently as his narrative.

Recommendation for the book club:

I just finished reading The Orphan Master's Son written by Adam Johnson and I seem not to get it out of my head yet, whether it is because of Johnson's convincing and disturbing narrative that overflows with brilliance or simply the unaltered exposure to North Korea itself, it doesn't matter. The book contains all the elements required or necessary as to why I love reading, which I believe is more than reason enough for a recommendation.

Thanks, Ms. Winfrey for loving books as much as we all do here in Goodreads!
