message 1201: by Tommie (new)

Tommie Wilson (lawher84) | 4 comments I'm Tommie from Pell City Alabama. I've been an avid reader my entire life and being from Pell City Alabama was a great motivator. Books have taken me all over the world, to the past and into the future. I've become great friends with famous people, world leaders, hillbillies and most of the worlds royal family members, legitimate and bastard alike. I was a "book snob" in that I purchased hard backs and had (have) an impressive collection of leather bound classics. Then I broke down and purchased a kindle keyboard e reader. Needless to say my life will never be the same again!! My reading has escalated to a rate even I never that that I would reach , other than when in college and law school! With age I have the need for and do reset the fonts for the books I read. I don't miss the bookstores (surprisingly) because I still spend hours in the kindle store and can browse various categories and read descriptions as I always do but now I can also immediately look over ever book written in a series ir by an author or can buy the same without having to back order anything and take delivery within minutes! I still have friends who are hold outs for the written page and that's fine I have no doubt that if they ever just try it once they too will be avid converts! I have a lovely library that's large enough to admire and don't feel guilty that I haven't added to it in over 3 years because I have an even better one on my kindle readers, iPad , computer, and telephone and carry my entire library with me on each of these devices! You can't do that in leather!! If I hadn't been a reader before I would become one now with the kindle!! Further an enormous advantage is the price of the E-book vs the written page. I can get all of the classics for free and new releases can be gotten for less than the cost of a paperback and if you get serious with your searches new releases best sellers or award winners can be found for under 5 dollars or free for a 1 day special giving me more $ to buy more books! Who needs leather when I can have a virtual library with nice hardback covers at a "full price cost" of less than $10.00 per volume ! It the ONLY TIME YOU WILL EVER HEAR ME SAY ; AIN'T TECHNOLOGY GREAT!!

message 1209: by [deleted user] (new)

I hope this isn't a repeat so if you've seen my face and name, skip and continue. My name us,Lisa and I have an eclectic taste in books mainly nesting in literary and historical reads. Just recently, I included non-fiction and hope I don't go to the other side:-)! I know Oprah has mixed reviews about her books, however, I adore her picks. The are usually, at least for me, right on or a author in the path of this bibliophage. In the past, of her books, let's obvert the usual favorites because I enjoyed most of her past picks and say that I didn't like Tara Road and Sue Monk Kidd "Bee's " book. I guess if I had to pick, it would be , for an ultimate favorite, Sue Miller's "While I was gone" and "A map of the world" by Jane Hamilton.

Further, I'm from the northeast of the USA. Eager to join and I m dying for her next pick on 1/7/2014!

I'm a big reader as well, and love to have a good book in my hands. But sometimes, I want instant gratification and that is what the Kindle offers me. I see a book I like, 1 minute later, it's mine. The Kindle is a good way to have thousands of books at your fingertips. I really enjoy using my kindle and have discovered a lot of book I may not have because of it(free Kindle books) as well as being able to read a book no matter where I am in the universe(as long as there is wifi or cell service)

message 1222: by Alison (new)

Alison Hi, everyone. My name is Alison and I live in a small ski town in the mountains of Idaho. Being originally from northwest Florida, I love stories set in the south, but I try not to tie myself down to any particular style of fiction. I'm currently reading my way through all of the Pulitzer prize-winning novels, but I also have loved all the Oprah picks I've read, so I've resolved to read all of them, as well. I'm not sure I can pick a favorite writer or theme. Suffice it to say that I enjoy prose that is written beautifully. So I enjoy writers like Toni Morrison, Kaye Gibbons, Zora Neale Hurston, Ernest Hemingway (although he's nothing like the others I just listed), but I know I'm leaving off tons of writers that I've enjoyed over the years. Oh, Wallace Stegnar wrote beautifully, as well. So many good books, so little time.

Gopika | 1 comments Hi, people. My name is Gopika, I live in India. Well, I had never been an ardent reader but I've always loved reading. Goodreads is a first ebook place I came across.. So I thought why not try learning something new here. I don't have a specific genre I am interested in, any book which makes my journey worth while and does not leave me in fiction is fine.
if I can get some book suggestions I'd welcome them.
Thank You.

Maggie Hunter | 1 comments Hi all. I'm Maggie and I am in and from Arvada Colorado. I'm looking forward to this experience. I enjoy Goodreads and I have read many, many OBC books. I just finished The Invention of Wings...loved it. I can't say my favorite book or author. Its like a favorite color. How can I pick just one? My favorite genres are historical fiction and biographies. I know that when I read "ATree Grows in Brooklyn", I was surprised to learn it was a classic and no one had ever recommended it to me. I enjoyed that book SO much, as I have many others. I have determined that I should make a "life list" of the books I have favored in my life...much like my life list of all the birds I've ever seen. Excited to start on that! Nice to join you.

message 1229: by Laura (new)

Laura (l-poulo) | 35 comments Hi, Maggie. I'm Laura in Urbana, IL. I also enjoyed _A Tree Grows in Brooklyn_ very much. Another lesser-known classic you might also enjoy is _I Capture the Castle_. If you haven't already read it, you might give it a try!

message 1230: by Marian (new)

Marian Powell | 27 comments Hi Maggie, I just read your post indicating that you are into historical fiction. I am the author of "The Royal Rose of Alabama", which is just that. Royalty enters South Alabama a few years before the civil war. They are running from their life as Royals in Europe to find a new kind of life in America. Europe has abolished slavery and now they are making their home in a slave state. The facts on Alabama in this writing are true to history even though it is written in novel form which includes intrigue, romance and hints of ghosts. You can find the book on Amazon or Barnes and nobel. For an autographed copy you can e-mail me at marianpowell1941@gmail.com. The 1941 us numerical. I know that you will enjoy goodreads.

I primarily read fiction although I will read non-fiction if something really interests me. I belong to quite a few book clubs - some here on Goodreads and three here in New Jersey where people get together to discuss books.

WAY back when I used to follow Oprah's Book Club on her show and have read many of the books that she chose.

Other interests are cooking, entertaining and gardening - also love the beach and we travel to warm places as often as possible. Lastly, we have the cutest 6 month old rescue puppy and he is my baby!

The female lead in this literary, interracial romance has a cat named Oprah. Latesha's hopeful boyfriend, the rich and handsome Peter Elsworth, has a goldfish named Dr. Phil.

I have been publishing for over 40 years, but this is the one story I really wanted to publish before I die.

message 1248: by Yolanda (new)

Yolanda (yolanda_areid) | 1 comments I'm Yolanda--an American writer/author in the US. I love to read, of course, but what no one knows (except maybe my mom) is that I used to read contemporary romances as a teenager. I've read mostly lots of literary fiction since. In 2009--after reading EAT PRAY LOVE by Elizabeth Gilbert--I was inspired to found an online book club (no longer active) and its accompanying book review blog. We had a grand total of five members (including me).

The original Oprah Show introduced me to Elizabeth Gilbert. I saw the interview, bought the book, and read it yearly. So I'm looking forward to reading/learning about books and authors I've never heard of.

WUTHERING HEIGHTS by Emily Bronte is, perhaps, my favorite book. A 19th century novel, WH depicts the dark eerie love story of Catherine and Heathcliff. It’s dark, it’s beautiful, it’s Goth, it’s riveting. Perfect reading in wintertime, since several scenes in the novel occur during snowstorms. My advice is to read at least three chapters before giving up on the book. Or skip the manservant’s rantings completely (that’s what I did as a teen and, sometimes, still do).

I also love THE GOLDEN NOTEBOOK by Doris Lessing. Reading it changed my life.

My most recent blog is Y Reid Books? at www.yreidbooks.blogspot.com.

Andi (A Literal Hottie) (andi_grant) | 4 comments I am Andi, happily married in Va Beach, mother of 4, full time wedding photographer. Reading in my me time, and I couldn't live without it. I started my true love affair with reading back with Oprah's original book club. I read them every month and was so excited for the new announcements every month. My favorites from that era were She's Come Undone, Tara Road and White Oleander
Summer of 2011 after reading The Kitchen House I was inspired to start a local book club with some friends- I would have been happy with 6 of us, but the response was huge -friends invited their friends and my little book club now has 32 members and we average about 20 in attendance every month! The best part is all of the ladies have become friends all from different walks of life. My club is The Literal Hotties and you can see the group's selections on a shelf on my page.
