My name is Ashleigh, I'm a Zimbabwean living in London and pining for the sun.
I love to read (obviously) and will usually try anything once. This has lead me to discover I do not enjoy science fiction and am too cowardly to read horrors.
My favourite authors are too many to mention but I love Philip Roth, Margaret Atwood, John Irving, Kate Atkinson, Maggie O'Farrell, Rohinton Mistry and V.S Naipaul.
I am so looking forward to meeting lots of like-minded individuals with exciting book recommendations.

Malik Reaves (malik_reaves) Hi, I'm Malik from Brooklyn, NY. My favorite author is Ngugi wa Thiong'o of Kenya, currently a professor at the University of California. I have long been inspired by the way he melds the personal and the political and shows our lives to be so much more than many of us consider them to be. I was fortunate to spend a year in Kenya and meet Mzee wa Thiong'o before he was forced into exile. His personal story is truly inspiring as well. I'm looking forward to sharing with the members here.

message 528: by Heather (last edited Dec 16, 2012 01:20PM) (new)

Heather Berkowitz (stingzgrrl) My name is Heather and I'm from Worcester, MA (about 40 miles west of Boston). My favorite author is a toss up between Stephen King and Chuck Palahuniuk, but I will read pretty much anything I can get my hands on. My favorite book is Shoeless Joe by WP Kinsella.

I've been a book worm since I first learned how to read and used to read 3 or 4 books at a time when I was kid - literally, I would sit on my bed surrounded by the books and read a few pages at a time from each one. I had to stop "fun" reading for awhile during grad school, but now that I've graduated, I think I'm making up for lost time!

message 531: by Marianne (last edited Dec 16, 2012 07:52PM) (new)

Marianne (emerald68) | 4 comments My name is Marianne and I am also a good-reads author!
I am a reader and writer from Manitoba, Canada.

I used to read books to escape reality, now I read books that can teach me something. My favorite genre is memoir, or anything that is based on a true story. I have read most of the books on Oprah's Book clubs and hope to finish them all.

My inspirational memoir actually begins with one of Oprah's comments that she made during live television a few years ago. Her comment made such an impression on me that I began to look at my life different, which is why I ended up writing my story. I hope that one day she will honour me by checking out my survival story, but i also recognize that there are many other people just like me, and as long as I make a difference in the average day person's life (by inspiring them), than that is more than I can ever hope for.

BTW - I cant wait to read Twelve Tribe Hattie
