Book cover for Patient H.M.: A Story of Memory, Madness, and Family Secrets
Neurosurgery, whatever the era, always requires at least two frightening qualities in its practitioners: the will to make forcible entry into another human’s brain, and the hubris to believe you can fix the problems inside.

3.5 stars.

Kim Stanley Robinson is not for everyone and he is not an easy author to read, but I am always astounded at how thoroughly he covers every topic that could possibly go into creating a new world while managing to write about fun and interest
New York 2140 by Kim Stanley Robinson
“So it’s still New York. People can’t give up on it. It’s what economists used to call the tyranny of sunk costs: once you’ve put so much time and money into a project, it gets hard to just eat your losses and walk. You are forced by the structure of the situation to throw good money after bad, grow obsessed, double down, escalate your commitment, and become a mad gibbering apartment dweller, unable to imagine leaving. You persevere unto death, a monomaniacal New Yorker to the end.”

Octavia E. Butler is always hit and miss with me. I loved Parable of the Sower. I hated Fledgling. I'm thinking I'll probably enjoy Kindred, but I did not like Wild Seed very much.

This book never would've hit my to-read pile if not for my book club. I wasn't a fan of the movie and suspected the book would be just as dreadful, but thought I'd give it a shot anyways since I love the ladies I read with. (We've had some great read ...more

Catherine Daigle is 17% done with New York 2140: An interesting concept so far but it definitely isn't going to be an easy read. My first impression is it's trying too hard to be smart. It's obvious the author is very knowledgeable in many different areas but it feels he tries too hard to show that off to the point that unless you have expertise in the fields he's writing about your eyes are just going to glaze over. Strong females so far, so points for that!
