I am nearly at the end now and the characters do grow on you. I have enjoyed the book but I think Ruth Park maybe did it better.

Glad you were able to get something out of it Phrynne. I think it's one of those books you either love or hate. Personally I really enjoyed it but I know others in my book club hated it!!! I haven't read Ruth Park yet. I'm assuming you mean The Harp In The South? It's on my TBR list and definitely a classic.

That's right. It's a trilogy and is very very good indeed.
I'm giving Cloudstreet three stars in the end because I did like it. I had a little bit of trouble with the mystical parts of it especially the asides about Fish. But I was pleased that Rose and Quick ended up happy.

Yes. I must say I didn't really get all the mystical bits either. Maybe it was a "Fish" thing? I keep meaning to read up on that aspect of the book but haven't as yet. I know a friend stopped reading because of those parts.

Yes - it was a bit like he hadn't really decided whether he was writing a social history type novel or a fantasy. There were a lot of ghosts in it. And the suggestion that the house itself was alive. No wonder people read this at book clubs. The possibilities for discussion would be endless!

My daughter is also doing Frankenstein for the HSC - she doesn't quite share my level of enthusiasm for it but there is so much you can discuss with it. Is your son doing it as a comparative to Blade runner (movie)?

Yes - Blade Runner and Frankenstein, that's them! Time to re-watch Blade Runner again - at least it's a good movie - well I think so, not so sure about the kids, though, they've both said that they get put off good books and movies as a result of the English process of deconstruction, which is a bit sad.

message 413: by Elaine (new)

Elaine | 2001 comments I'm a bit behind on this one so I'm combining favourite genre( April) with male author( May) and reading I am the Messenger I am the Messenger by Markus Zusak . Hope this is ok?

message 419: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments I finished Remembering Babylon by David Malouf a couple of days ago. Interesting idea for the plot, but unfortunately I didn't feel like the book actually delivered and the ending was unresolved and left me unsatisfied. 2★ (Probably really only 1.5, but since GR doesn't do half-stars I'll be generous and round up!)

Am about to start Frantic by Katherine Howell so I have higher hopes for it!

Oooh, I loved that book Kathryn! I hope you do too...it was my first (and her first) and I devoured the rest after that one!

message 421: by Dale (new)

Dale Harcombe | 6871 comments That's certainly a change of pace Kathryn

message 422: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments That's good, Dale, because I didn't like Malouf's pace very much. Or his writing style. I wasn't intending to read Frantic this month, but since I had it on the shelf still unread toward the end of May, I figured I'd use it for June and leave my June book till October!

And I do hope I enjoy it, Brenda. I still haven't started yet, but I feel like I've had more ordinary reads lately than I would like, so hopefully this will be a bit better than ordinary!!

Elaine | 2001 comments Brenda wrote: "Have you read The Book Thief ?"

Sorry Brenda I didn't see this earlier. Yes I have read The Book Thief. It's one of my all time favourites. It was a great book. I just realised I'm a couple of months behind on this challenge but I will cheat a little and combine April/May and read The Messenger The Messenger by Markus Zusak and then fit in my female author for June, who I haven't decided on yet. Lots of catching up to do !!!!

Now I'm ready for Julys, but as I have read the new release I had chosen for there, I'll have to re-think! At least I have plenty of time to decide!

Elaine | 2001 comments It's a heart wrenching read Dale but definitely worth reading. I agree with Sharon about the tissues. I reckon I cried for about two thirds of it, right to the end. It was my favourite book from last year. So glad you're loving it.

And to think that Marieke Hardy had the nerve to liken it to the McDonald's of books!!!! Meaning I guess that it's popular but without any substance. Seriously???
