My name is Luke, and I am completely new to the series. I am a huge Tolkien fan and contend that it is the best and most influential fantasy epic ever written. However, I stumbled upon Malazan and have heard great things about it. I have been looking to find another world to explore that was as alive to me as Middle Earth was, and from what I have heard, Malazan could do the trick.
I have been warned of its difficulty, but everyone in the group seems very kind and willing to help rookies like myself. I'm really looking forward to cracking into "Gardens" this week!

This is my fist read through Malazan and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Currently on Ch. 3 of Midnight Tides. Loving Erikson's world, characters, density and writing.
I must admit I had a tougher time getting into MT than the previous books. So after House of Chains I took a break and found myself hooked on Rothfuss' KKC. Devoured that quickly and now back to pick up where I left off here.
I came here to say thank you for the excellent chapter summaries and discussions. I often read at night and reading the summaries helps me understand who is who and provides references I would have otherwise missed - particularly early on in MT with the number of new players introduced with multiple names, new setting, politics, etc.
So thanks everyone (in particular, David Sven!)
Cheers,
Matt
Welcome Matt. I was the same with the start MT, but eventually came to like the book. Hopefully you'll find the same thing.

Thanks to everyone who posts!
Welcome another new Matt.
Personally I've read it through once over the course of 16 months, and that was fine for me. Some of the others can speak to if you'd be better rereading 1-5 before doing 6.
Worse case you can read our book 1-5 discussion threads to refresh your memory if need be without worrying about spoilers for the stuff you haven't read so long as you avoid the spoiler tagged stuff.

Welcome newer Matt! I would read through to the end before a reread. There's a lot to appreciate in the first book knowing the ending from the beginning.

I'm really enjoying GotM and I immediately went out and got DG as well so I'm all set for the foreseeable future. Then I discovered this group with the great chapter threads. It has really helped me gain some extra insight in the book so far.
Thanks!

Welcome to the group Conor!
I still get updates from these threads so I'm sure to see your thoughts when you post.

I used Tor.Com re-read for Midnight Tides as I went, it was helpfull in keeping the characters straight, and summarizing the events.

Thanks. It's cool that someone else is still reading. I started reading recently so I'm only on chapter 9 of book 1 atm.

I'm currently waiting for my copy of book 9 to come in the mail... already have book 10. Anyway, I can't wait to finish the series and I kinda regret I wasn't aware of this group until I was way far behind (I started my first successful read as opposed to skim of book 1 in early April of this year) but I haven't read Forge of Darkness yet and it'll be cool to discuss it with you guys!

GotM was a little tough the first time around but I was hooked by DG. I feel that any fan of Erikson would be doing themselves a favour by at least revisiting GotM as you have a much firmer grasp on the concepts of the Malazan world which brings the book to a whole new level. Or maybe it's just me. ;)
That being said, I am really not one for posting a lot but I do really enjoy reading other fans insights, opinions and theories.
Cheers all!

well... I read Garden of the Moon "tenish" years ago and I was so lost that I put GoM on the shelf "never again". Last year I picked up Deadhouse Gates so I had to reread GoM and I liked them very much. (Look, a "grown up" reader :))
Now I'll try to read the entire series with less time between books and with your invaluable help navigating the Reader's ocean.

Oooh, they are already contributing to the success of my stay in Eriksonville.
Cool. I'm biased, but I think this group has become a great resource to both old and new malazan fans alike.

I'm currently reading The Crippled God,can't wait to see how this story ends! I hope to discuss about the books with other fans and get to know things that I probably missed on my first read

Welcome Brandon. Glad you found us. I definitely think our book discussions are one of the best resources for reading/understanding this series on the internet. But of course I'm biased.
Glad to see you're finding it helpful.
Glad to see you're finding it helpful.

I started the series about two years ago, but then got caught up in other genres. I loved the first three books and now I'm getting back into after starting House of Chains yesterday. It's good to see familiar characters again, but I'm liking some of the new ones, too.
Really happy to be here.
