We are only on the third book, and reading at a pace of 34 chapters a week. Depending on your free time/how fast you read it shouldn't be too bad.

Edit Note: I blame lack of coffee for doing that wrong..

Four chapters per week. You set the schedule, I can't believe you got that wrong ;)

Welcome Paul. Rob is right, well actually he is wrong as well, but he is right in saying that you can catch up. If you invest some Malazan time and put your life on hold for a couple of weeks you'll be with us in no time. Its a great read with a group, especially if your its your first time through as a lot gets discussed.
My recommendation; stick Mistwraith on hold and dive into Malazan, but then again, I am biased.
Welcome aboard.

I just hate to fall behind. I try to read (or at least skim) everything from the 5 or so groups I'm in. Though only 2 of them are pretty active (this and S&L, and this one has been much less active as the series has gone one).

Paul (brocklaser) | 55 comments Well it is my first time and I think you have convinced me to give it a go. I will start the first book tonight when I finish work and see how it goes!

I have been struggling with mistwraith as other books have taken precedence on it so it is already on hold! I should really update that.

Worst case scenario there are all the threads from the previous books there, and if you have any questions/observations to share please make use of them.

People have been pretty good about responding to older threads. I know I get email notifications for every one of them. lol.

Rob | 1 comments Hello,

I started reading the Malazan Book of the Fallen after Gardens of the Moon got a great Salon.com review back in 2004 and I have been hooked ever since!

I loved his prose style and thoroughly enjoyed assembling Erikson's jigsaw puzzle (with the help of the Web of course). I haven't read any of the Esselmont books yet but they are on the list.

In any case, glad to find another place to talk all things Malazan!

Rob

Stephen Fialko | 1 comments Hi,

I am Stephen, I am currently reading Toll of the Hounds. This series is absolutely amazing. I tried to take breaks with reading other series and each time I had to pick Malazan back up. Never done a discussion board before, so I am looking forward to seeing what this has to offer. I am generally new to reading as I just started getting into it a little over a year ago.
Happy Reading everybody.

Sounds good. Always glad to have another voice in the conversation.

Curt Greetings,

Getting a late start on joining in on the conversations. Finding this group here spurred me to try this series & damn glad I did! Started a month after you all did so still playing catch-up (3/4 of the way thru HoC). Thanks to all those posting in the chapter discussions as it has really added to seeing and loving the great depths in this work.

Curt

Hi Xara, I think we are hoping Erikson can produce a book a year for the next twenty years because there are so many more stories to be told. We are reading midnight tides at the moment and it is making me want to revisit FoD again.

message 276: by Lori (new)

Lori I'm definitely putting a hold on my life when the new book comes out! I also order it from Book Depository in England so I don't have to wait those tedious months until the American publishing date.

Welcome to everyone, such a pleasure to have you here!

Carol-anne | 17 comments Hey guys!

My name's Carol-Anne.. This is my first message here on Goodreads.

I started reading the Malazan series back in April. I am 3/4 through House of Chains. Since I am reading another book between each tome, I think I should catch up with you guys by the end of Midnight Tides! I can do it!

I still like to read the chapter by chapter forums on the tomes I've read so far.. it's a great food for thought!

PS-Excuse my English.. It's my second language.

Hi Carol-Anne and welcome. Keep hitting those chapters are you'll be up with our schedule shortly.

Some of us have English as a first language and write stuff that doesn't make sense ;) so you don't have to worry about what you write here.

message 284: by Mpauli (new)

Mpauli | 246 comments Michael, Hood's Lickspittle, gazed about the battlefield. He had slain them all...from Gardens of the Moon to The Crippled God.
10 books were defeated. He had laughed, he had cried, he had heard the coin spinning and dared to look under the Hood.
Now he was done! An epic task accomplished! He was free!

As he heard the warren open beside him he raised an eyebrow. Silence followed only to be broken by a distant meowing.
"Mortal Sword! What are you doing here? It's all over!"
"Oh we're doing a reread of Malazan, are you in? We're already on book 5, but you'll catch up."
Something broke in Michael, he closed his eyes and smiled. The last thing he heard was the rattling of thousands of pages...apparently the coin spun again.

Yeah, it was something like that. I'm quite sure. So I signed on for the reread and here I am.
Looking forward to discussing this great series with vets and new recruits. :)
Gonna catch them (up) all!

message 288: by Jude (new)

Jude John (judejohn) | 2 comments Hi everyone,

Quite nice to see a group for the Malazan enthusiasts. I have been reading the series for a while and have to say that it is the most engrossing and highly entertaining read that I have come across.

To give a bit of insight how I landed in the Malazan empire was that I have always been a fantasy genre fan. After finishing game of thrones, I was looking to find similar books when I happened to chance upon an article which recommended the Malazan series in earnest and suggested that it just might be the crown jewel of fantasy. Intrigued I started and phew, what an incredible journey I have had. There has never been a series which truly awes in every aspect. Erikson has
indeed given us one the best series for the people of this genre. Spellbinding with its depth, inspiring in its characters and magnificent in the execution.

I have completed Reaper's gale and reading 'Return of the crimson guard' currently. I could have go on to finish the 10 books of Erikson at one go but then again then if I want to read more on the Malazan empire I would have to read Ian C esslemont, so I figure I would finish his 5 books and end the series with the 10th book 'Crippled God'. I am excitedly waiting to finish Crimson Guard and start 'Toll of the hounds'.

Good reading folks, cheers!!!!

message 291: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly | 15 comments Hi everyone,

I read GotM in a week on a beach vacation in 2009 and loved it. Since then I've read through reapers gale (I think), but I've struggled to keep track of what is going on and find myself constantly picking up and putting down these books (taking over a year each to get through the last couple) I keep trying because, even when I have no clue what is going on in the larger story, I absolutely love the characters and the dialogue in these books.
I've jumped back into bonehunters this week with the hope that following along with you guys will help keep me from getting lost and motivate me to finally finish this series.

Mpauli | 246 comments Rob is so quick.^^

Welcome Kimberly,

from my experience on my first read I know that I struggled a lot with this series.
After I finished a book, I wasn't quite sure what I had just read and went on the internet to look for explanations and all the connections and threads I'd missed.

Therefore reading with this group should be very helpful, due to the moderate pace and in-depth discussion.
And we have our own squad mage. You should try him. Ask any question you have and David will come up with a quote from three books past that perfectly clears up your confusion. It's like magic!
