Vi | 8 comments Hi everyone, I've been stalking the group for the past few days until I caught up with this week's schedule. My friend is a huuuuge fan of this series and so I'm picking up this series. I'm glad I found the group as now it's become a group read.

Welcome to the warren of the fallen Vi! We look forward to navigating Chaos with you on our path to Ascending understanding. It would be advisable, no matter how tempting or tantalizing to avoid clicking these (view spoiler)

Seriously have fun!

Vi | 8 comments Thanks, David! It's difficult not to click those spoiler tags. Very difficult, indeed!

Kudos to people here though, they're very good at not spoiling openly.

Welcome!

If you're not reading anything else the pace is such that you should be able to catch up in a week or two I'd imagine.

We're through 480/666 pages in the MMPB version, and that's counting this week's reading.

Welcome!

I'll be joining in from scratch too! Or attempting to at least. Bookstore gift card + coupon = book purchased, after extensive recommendations from friends.

~Thena~ (athena-nadine) | 39 comments I'm Athena. I read Gardens of the Moon the first time when it was released in hardcover by Tor in 2004. It sounded interesting, was a brand new release, so I picked it up. I adored it! But I didn't get to any of the others until years later.

My father died the month before I read GOTM and I got married that October. Then I got pregnant with our first child seven months later and life turned crazy. I ended up forgetting all about Malazan.

I rediscovered the series in early 2008 and reread GOTM. Then I read all the available books straight through, and anxiously waited for Toll the Hounds later that year. Then I devoured that too.

This is my third read of this book and will be my second read of everything up to Toll the Hounds. Dust of Dreams and The Crippled God have been on my shelf since they were released, but I never got around to them because my TBR pile is so big and I kept getting distracted by other books. I need to reread the others before finishing the series, and thought it would be fun to do it this way, so here I am. :)

I meant to start with everyone else but got sidetracked by sick kids and other things. So I'm starting today. I'll catch up quickly. :)

LOL yep! None of the ups and downs in my life were ever able to pull me away from my books until I had children. ;-)

message 171: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Hello Everyone - I'm so glad I found this group. I've been wanting to read GoTM for a while now but some of the reviews make it sound rather intimidating (and frankly, not that enjoyable). After reading the first chapter I can see how it can be perceived as somewhat overwhelming. That said, I can also sense the epic potential of this series and I'm excited to continue reading. But first...off to the chapter one thread. :)

message 172: by Hanne (new)

Hanne (hanne2) | 228 comments hi lisa! welcome. i'm currently three quarters into the book and it's definitely not as intimidating and scary as i was expecting, so no worries - i think some reviews are grossly exagerated

Also this group has a great mix of new and re-readers making for not only great discussion, but helping to clear up any confusion.

So don't be shy about posting questions in the chapter threads.

Lindsey | 7 comments Hello!

I was almost through with GotM when I found this group last week and started lurking. I'm a first-time reader and I have to say, the discussions are fantastic! There were so many details I missed reading on my own that make SE's world much deeper and more fascinating than it already was!

I finished GotM yesterday and can't wait to read and discuss DG along with the group! If I can wait two weeks. Quick! I need to find something else to read!

Camilla Hansen (malazanshadowdancer) Hello there!

I've been lurking for a while, since I actually just started the 7th book, but I love to follow the discussions and see what I missed back then. It's really great to see how many are intrigued with the books and how much ;)

I couldn't wait, I read Deadhouse Gates over this past week and carefully made copious notes in the margins as I read so that I can come back and share my thoughts and observations as the DG read starts next week. In fact, I just started my reread of Memories of Ice last night. I am continually amazed at how much more I understand as I reread this series--all of those mysterious little pieces are starting to fall in place! This series just sucks you in deeper and deeper!

Only 10 days till we start. I finished Gardens of the Moon a week early, but overall I think the slower pace is what has made for such good discussion.

People can read at their own pace/other books without feeling rushed and still have plenty time for discussion.

If you guys start getting too far ahead you're going to start forgetting what happens in detail. Unless you take notes like Christopher. That seems like too much work for me, but to each their own.

Which is why I haven't started yet. I know myself, and I know I'd get all wrapped up in the book again and wouldn't stop to take notes. Then I'd be all lost in the discussions. As impatient as I am, it's better for me to wait and start with the group. :)

message 184: by Lori (new)

Lori I have it pulled from my bookshelf all set to go. I'm so itching to start it but I'm determined to have a bit of will power. Which I don't usually have! BUT I finished GotM before the discussion started, and by the time the discussions were in the second week, I had already forgotten details of what happened where and when and couldn't participate the last few weeks. So this time I want to read as the group reads.

HOWEVER I find it impossible to stop reading a book that I'm obsessed with, so wish me luck!

So far my strategy of distracting myself with other books in between has worked well for me, but my copy of DG arrived this week and has been taunting me.

I have all 10 sitting in my bookshelf, just staring at me every time I walk by. They're mad at me because I only read the first eight and have been neglecting them. lol

Captain Sir Roddy, R.N. (Ret.) (captain_sir_roddy) I have two sets of the series (including Esslemont's too), the hardcover and trade paperbacks. My trade paperbacks are my 'working copies', as they are heavily annotated with underlined sections, marginalia notes, and ton's of 'thoughts and observations' notes following each chapter. I had a full set of the mass-market paperbacks, but sent those on to my oldest daughter who is looking for a new series to read since she's finished Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series through the fifth book.

Personally, I think a person could reread the MBotF series every couple of years for the rest of one's life and continue to discover new stuff--it is a mine that just never runs out of ore!

I agree. I'm always finding new things in the books and I don't think I'm going to run out of discoveries anytime soon. I have them all in first US printing hardcovers and am buying them in ebook to read on my kindle for this read along.

message 194: by Steve Toyne (new)

Steve Toyne Hi everyone.

I read GOTM back in 2011 having been aware of the series and owning the book since about 2007. It took several attempts to get into it, this is partly because of a really poor reading patch I was going through but also the famed 'dumped into the middle of everything' that Erikson does to his reader. I was determined to get through it and I loved it.

I am now just over half way through Deadhouse Gates which is even better and more epic.

At the rate I read it won't take this group long to catch up with me and from then on I will try and keep up the pace of the schedule.

One of the things I am in awe of is the vast amount of ideas that Erikson crams into his books, even if they are only hinted at. Most of these ideas alone could give way to a ten book epic series and yet here he is spoiling us by giving us idea after idea, most of which are highly original and cool. I am so looking forward to getting through this series.

Like Mott Wood and the Mott Irregulars. Hoods Breath but I'd like to read the story of the BlackDog Swamp battle.

Welcome to The Fallen Steve.

David (drl2) | 41 comments Hi everyone, I'm David and just read GOTM last month for the first time. I've been getting more and more into fantasy novels and series in the past few years, and this series has been on my radar as a "to read" for quite some time. I was impressed with the first book and knew immediately I wanted to read the rest. Being new to the Malazan series and new to Goodreads, I was excited to find this discussion group. It was also perfect timing because it looks like you're about to move into the 2nd book at the exact time I'm about to do it as well. Looking forward to reading more of the discussions and getting involved going forward.

Cheers
