On the Group homepage, look for bookshelf. It's easier on a desktop computer than a phone app. You will see on the shelves all the books the group has read. If you scroll through and count the number you have rated it's an easy way to count how many you have read. I tagged all those books with "Catching-Up-On-Classics". Now I have an easy way to add books to the count when I read new ones.

I have had "around 50%" as my goal for a while. I tend to stay at about 47%. I try to read 20 book from the shelf each year. Last year it was a few less than that. This year I will try to increase... by coincidence I wanted to read 12 group books from 2023 and 12 from previous years... That's your magic number for 60% if I keep it up.

I use a similar system: I have a
catching-up-read shelf for books on the group shelf, I have read,
and catching-up-on-classics‎ shelf for the unread ones.

Alternatively you can vote on the Listopia list:
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/9...
for books you have read. That only works so long you are under 100 books.
The list is not quite up to date.

Okay just realized you were not saying percentages. Sorry!

J_BlueFlower (j_from_denmark) | 2268 comments Here is one more trick, if you want to keep track of all the group books including those you haven't read and isn't going to:

The "read", "currently-reading‎" and "to-read‎" are exclusive shelves. You can introduce your own exclusive shelves, for instance "looks-interesting‎". That way you can shelf a group book you don't want to read without it cluttering your "to-read".

Wobbley, that's impressive progress!

I am pretty new and never checked on this before.
Dec 2023: 43.2%

My impulse is to aim for 50% because I like round numbers. That's an additional 48 books in 2024, which feels like a lot! For now, I will keep the list handy, and pick out things that look fun!

Kathleen | 5458 comments Fantastic, Wobbley--that's a big jump!

And JenniferAustin, that's a huge number for your first time checking! Don't forget that you get bonus books when the group reads some you've previously read, so you don't necessarily need to read all 48.

I'm sticking with a 50% goal, and am surprised that I'm getting closer. I usually inch up 1% or so each year, but this year it was 2%:
210 books read out of the group's 428, so now at 49%.

Kathleen, you're really close to your goal now -- exciting!

Recently I find that I am spending my time on reflecting on what I've read, what I want to read and what others have read and and want to read, rather than actually reading books. It's just too much fun!

For a while I was trying to keep the Listopia up to date. It was kind of my job. But it is now not possible with the 100 book limit you mentioned. I would need multiple accounts, and that's just not worth it.

June 2016 14/148 - 9% (when I started the group)
Dec 2016 44/168 - 26%
Dec 2017 85/201 - 42%
Dec 2018 137/244 - 56%
Dec 2019 180/278 - 65%
Dec 2020 220/318 - 69%

Mar 2021 229/326 -70 %
Dec 2022 (no data)
Dec 2023 322/438 - 75.5%

I haven't updated since March of 2021. I'm surprised that I didn't go down because I haven't had time to participate in as many group reads as I used to. The group did seem to pick quite a few that I had already read over the last couple years so that helped. I'm happy if I can be anywhere in the 70-80% range and expect to go down like Bob & Laurie at some point.

Keeping a yearly record is like a diary. 2020-2021 was the Covid year. I thought lock-down would be great for reading. Nope. I forgot my husband would also be locked down with me, LOL! He is a noisy fella at times.

Fall 2021 - present I moved from the teaching position I had been in for years to teaching reading at an elementary school. I guess there has been less time for classics. I moved from 8th to 3rd grade then 4th grade. I used to sneak group reads into my classroom when I could. Two birds, one stone...

July 2018 67/227 = 29.5% (when I joined the group)
Jan. 1st, 2019 88/247 = 35.6% +21
Dec 31, 2019 127/276 = 46.0% +39

Dec. 31, 2022 183/394 = 46.5% +16

Just checked. 16 actually. Less than I would have guessed. I imagine myself trying hard to read the short every month. Pff...

I read:
1 A Very Easy Death (short)
2 The Symposium (old)
3 Winnie-the-Pooh (new, I reread)
4 Lady Windermere's Fan (old)
5 The Bear (short)
6 Into the Wild (new)
7 How Much Land Does a Man Need? (short)
8 Children of the Corn (short)
9 Moby-Dick or, The Whale (old/long)
10 The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket (old)
11 The Moon Is Down (new)
12 Brokeback Mountain (short)
13 Heart of a Dog (old/short)
14 The Dream of a Ridiculous Man (short)
15 A Confederacy of Dunces (new)
16 Twelve Angry Men (short)

7 books added I had already read and did not read again:
The Sign of Four
The Sound of Waves
The Story of an Hour
Medea
The Big Sleep
Electra
The 39 Steps

What I liked the most: Twelve Angry Men
Most fun/surprised by: A Confederacy of Dunces (very glade I was group-pushed into that one)

Darren (dazburns) | 2148 comments since my most recent declaration 13 months ago (Dec'22: 222/399 = 55.6%)

there have been 42 titles added to our shelves, which now stand at 441
of which I have read a further new 23 (some catch-up, some with group, some already read previously)

8 catchup:
Oliver Twist
From Earth To Moon
Scarlet Letter
Les Miserables
Metamorphoses
Remains of the Day
Canterbury Tales
Lady Chatterley

4 withgroup:
Aeneid
Way We Live Now
Death Comes for Archbishop
Power & Glory

11 previous:
Swann's Way
Sign of Four
Arthur Gordon Pym
Castle of Otranto
Heart of a Dog
Loved One
Big Sleep
Night Before Xmas
Mrs Palfrey
39 Steps
Confederacy of Dunces

If for instance we add 12 short + 4 moderates pick + 8 new + 6 old + 2 long = 34, you need to read (or have already read) 20 books to keep up 60%, or 21 per year to ever so slowly get to 60%.

Aaand that could be 12 short stories and 9 books. Not impossible. (Definitely easier than my catching-up year .... Les Misérables, Don Quixote and Swann’s Way).
