The LOTR films were very hard to sit through, and this is only one normal sized book padded out to two films.
I might rent it at some point.

Bahaha that's a good way to go if you think you are going to want to make comparisons!
Personally the LOTR and now The Hobbit are films that I enjoy seeing on the big screen and so I am very excited. I do understand why people find them too long though.

Hey I hate to break this to you but its been padded out to THREE films now :(

I have no idea what the reasoning behind this is.. The Hobbit was the shortest of all the books and it's being made into three movies.. >_> The movies were already extremely hard to sit through (I love them, but my ADHD kicks in after 2 hours)

I mean yeah, book to movie adaptions are never perfect and ugh, I seem to be the only person who dislikes the 'Lonely Mountains' song (apart from when the dwarves sing it in the trailer) but at least it's a nice view and I get to see it together with my friends and in English too. <3 Plus, I really like Martin Freeman. xD

This is one epic story but in one book. It kind of needs to be in one release. This movie might be 2 x 2 episodes. People can watch them back to back or as two halves. When all are out I will have a marathon. Tragically the children will probably not wait.
I plan to see the movie, oddly enough, one of the things I find myself anticipating the most is the musical score. I thought Howard Shore did a beautiful job on LOTR, and I can't wait to find out what The Hobbit soundtrack will be like. Does anyone know who the composer is?

I heard something alarming. Apparently since they used 48 seconds per frame, the experience draws you in as if you're there, but by the end you have a huge headache and it starts feeling trippy. Is this good or bad?

Howard Shore is amazing. The Music from LOTR was the first time I separated the music from the movie, if that makes sense. Normally, it's like a part of the show. I love the feeling I get when I hear one of the songs and it takes me back the movie, which I practically know by heart.

I live very near the location they use for Hobbiton so I really should go see the film!!!!!

The Howard Shore score is wonderful. Rollingstone.com had it up almost in its entirety to listen to as a preview, so I spent a couple days absorbing that. Definitely one to buy when it comes out. I'll add to my playlist of things I listen to while I'm writing!

Me too! Although I'm at work the next day so I might be a bit tired. I've heard mixed reviews of it so far but I'm taking them with a pinch of salt. After the HUGE success of the LOTR films, people will be on the lookout for the tiniest flaw in the Hobbit.

The hobbit! directed by Peter Jackson!
Woo!

Actually I understand there will be three movies. The first one ends at chapter 6 of the book.

personally, i couldn't give an shit about the appendicies and the additional material he's shoe horned in - it's a kids book and i wanted to see a kids film made of it to watch with my kids. instead he seems to have made a naval scratching movie for die hard fans only.
i'll watch it on dvd in about 4 years when the sequels are all done and dusted, but i don't think it will hold a candle to the enjoyment of reading it to my son

false. He did not go into the forest to drive out Sauron, but instead to drive out the necromancer, played/voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch.

There actually were a few animated films made, one of The Hobbit, and a two-parter of the LOTR trilogy. Back in the 70's or early 80's I think it was.
