Fantastic favorite and certainly in my top five! I keep hoping against hope that Frank Darbont will make a screen adaptation.

Welcome!

Lucian Bane | 1 comments Hi guys. Misery is one of my favorites and The Shining. I was gifted a type-writer like the one in Misery this past Christmas lol. Love that creepy thing. Am I the only one that thinks they picked THE BEST actors for the movie? Both Misery and The Shining!

Glad to be a part of the group

I thought Kathy Bates and James Caan were amazing in Misery! I have mixed feelings about the actors in The Shining. In the Kubrick version, I loved Jack Nicholson but could have done without Shelly Duvall. In the made for TV mini series, I loved Rebecca De Mornay but could have done without Steven Weber. (Who?) Side note: I actually live in Colorado and had the opportunity to stay at the Stanley Hotel. Unfortunately the film with Jack Nicholson was not filmed at the Stanley Hotel in Colorado. It is however where Stephen King stayed when he wrote the book. It's also where the made for TV mini series was filmed. Just did the math and that would have been like 20 years ago when I stayed there. My mom and grandma took me there for my 18th birthday.

Welcome Andrei. The Shining is as close as any book can come to being the essential Stephen King, but if you are reading early King, you have to check out The Stand and Salem's Lot.

Welcome Jacky. I'd recommend Doctor Sleep as one of the better latter King books.

Thank you!
"Doctor Sleep" is a book that is mentioned very often.
Some find it "pointless" as a sequel, but many liked it...

message 3863: by Mary (new)

Mary Hello! My name is Mary and I've been a Stephen King fan since I read Carrie - which I read because it was the only Stephen King book out at the time (giving away my age but I don't care because I'm a proud fan!). I own nearly all of his books although there are a handful that I need to get on my shelf. I have not had a chance to read some of the newer books yet because I started re-reading the books in chronological order so it may be a while before I get to the new ones, but they are on the shelf ready and waiting!

I’m Marissa! I’m 17 and I’m from Canada! I’m a newer fan of Stephen King and his novels, but after reading a few a quickly fell in love. I’m new to Goodreads so feel free to send me a friend request. I’m the only one out of all my friends who loves reading, so it would be nice to meet some people who do as well :)

Jack | 1 comments Hi all! I- as always- forgot to introduce myself. My names Jack and I'm 24. I've been reading for a little over a year (late to the party I know) and Stephen King has been a huge influence in my reading. As of late I haven't read as much King because there are so many books I want to read.

I'm currently reading Different Seasons by SK and really enjoying it. I've been trying to keep to a chronological order for my reading but I completely overlooked the Bachman books and will need to go back and read some of those. Anyway I look forward to the future discussions in this group! :)

I'm glad you're enjoying that book. The popular opinion is that the other books in that series are even better. Enjoy your book!

Suzie Likes Books (suzielikesbooks) | 1 comments Hello all...usually I just lurk but feel struck with the urge to add my introduction. I am Suzie, a registered nurse from Philadelphia. I relocated to Baltimore 2 years ago. Stephen King definitely feels like an old friend, hes always been there and continues to keep me up at night, unable to resist turning another page! The recommendations he makes are also usually spot on, and I cant wait for his newest release, so glad its coming out early! Thanks for the warm welcome

I have always loved him but only ever watched the movies and read a few short stories featured in other books. I am in the middle of The Stand and it is AMAZING so far. Welcome Mel! Yes, King is probably most known for his characterization. He can really bring characters to life.

Hans | 66 comments Hi, I'm Hans from Germany. I'm 35 and I've been an avid reader since I was about 12 when a friend of my Mom brought me the first Harry Potter back from England.
My first encounter with Stephen King (in written form) was during my studies (English & American literature) with the Dark Tower series, which I loved so much that I even did a paper on it. I admit that I first had problems getting into his other works, probably because I haven't always been a great Horror fan, but during recent years I've begun to catch up and you could very much call me a King fan now.

I can understand where you are coming from, I think the Dark Tower series is very atypical of King's writing. Few would recommend it as an introduction to his work.

Welcome Naomi, reading the best of King, (or even not quite the best) for the first time is an awesome experience.
