Welcome! I always envy readers who stumble upon him late because you don't have to wait for him to write another. You have so many at your disposal.

message 3658: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Keck I'm Jamie. I'm a mother of 2, wife of 1. I just started reading Stephen King books, and I am hooked. It's funny; for years, my parents read every book of his that came out, but I never thought I'd like them. I started with Carrie, and I'm slowly working my way through. Nice to meet everyone!

Mike (miketstl) | 14 comments Welcome aboard Jamie. I did the same thing with Dean Koontz. I had always skipped his books. In my head I was equating that his books were probably not that good because he was such a prolific writer. The flaw in my logic was that one of my favorite authors (King) is known to pump out a lot of books too.

Elle (elevatedbliss) | 24 comments Hello Everyone! I'm new here, but not new to Stephen King's writing. I think I read my first SK novel when I was about 12 years old and I believe it was Cujo. I read a lot of his books during my high school years and then sort of moved on for a while with an odd book of his here and there. I've recently added several of his books to my TBR pile and considering revisiting his classics that I read all those years ago.

I'm happy to be a part of this group who share my like and admiration on Stephen King.

message 3693: by Tim (last edited Sep 27, 2019 06:01AM) (new)

Tim (timothypg13) Hello, everyone! My name is Tim, and I am from New England, just like the great Stephen King himself. Part of the reason I love his work so much is how I "know" the people that inhabit his universe. They are authentic in their fictionality.

I've read King on and off for years (I even used to teach Carrie), but I recently started reading in vaguely chronological order as best I can. So far I have read Pet Sematary (before I started the chrono read), Carrie, Salem's Lot, The Shining, Doctor Sleep (not chronological but sequel!), The Long Walk (I may exclude "Bachman" moving forward), and now I am on The Dead Zone. I know I missed The Stand, but I need time to devout to the opus. I am concurrently reading The Institute because I can't help myself.

Looking to being part of the group!

Hey Tim, The Long Walk is one of my favorite King works. I think it's one of his best. What did you think?

message 3695: by Tim (new)

Tim (timothypg13) Hi Nick! I enjoyed The Long Walk for what it is (the journey of death in hopes of finding new life), but I wouldn’t count it as one if my favorites. I had a hard time connecting with most of the characters, so when they died, I didn’t have any emotional reaction. However, the like the characters themselves, I couldn’t stop (reading in my case). Why is it one of your favorites?

I thought the characters were great and their interaction and discussion. I thought the book captured their age and their world and their over-optimism perfectly. I also liked the story, though my feelings about the ending weren't as negative as most others'. The fact that kids could form those kinds of bonds with the knowledge that only one of them would survive was incredibly insightful on King's part, not to mention his picture of that dystopian world. I understand that he wrote a lot of this during and right after college which makes his story and character development truly amazing.
