Hello, I'm Lynsie. I have been on Goodreads for a couple of years but to be honest I still can't get my head around it! I'm from Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. At the moment I am re-reading my Stephen King books.

Janet M (pianogal) Hi, King fans. I'm Janet from both Pittsburgh, PA and now Virginia, USA. Never thought I'd be a Stephen King fan but then I read Misery, and I'm hooked. Before that I didn't realize there were SK books without the supernatural horror element. I've been on Goodreads awhile; only recently discovered these groups. Looking forward to joining in discussions. I just finished Blaze (by SK's Bachman) and a number of SK novellas from Different Seasons and Full Dark No Stars.
I waste lots of time reading; guess I'm a book addict. Nice to find you guys!

Dean Hoban | 4 comments Hello constant readers. I am from Birmingham UK. Been a goodreads member for a few years now. Never really contributed to boards before. Have been reading SK for about 18 months now and have finished: Carrie; Salem's Lot; The Shining; The Stand (FAVOURITE); Christine; Needful Things; From A Buick 8 (LEAST FAVOURITE) and Cell. I am just about to open the cover of a brand new Under The Dome. Look forward to contributing more.

Ryan Hi! Im Ryan and I'm kind of revamping my Goodreads account. I love SK, though I haven't read as much of him as I'd like. Working on it! Looking forward to getting into some good discussions about his works.

message 2613: by Sheri (new)

Sheri | 25 comments Hi Ryan...nice to have ya back! I'm considering re-reading the Dark Tower series again as its been a long while since I read it & I miss Roland & the others. Yes...there's the movie, but I couldn't be less interested & do not plan on tuning in. Although I'll admit, all of the buzz about the movie got me thinking about the series & wanting to revisit it. Have you read it?

message 2614: by Kole (new)

Kole Donaldson | 24 comments Not to butt in, but at some point this year, I'd love to start the Dark Tower Series, so if there is a group reading I'd like to read along

message 2615: by Sheri (new)

Sheri | 25 comments @Dean A few days ago you mentioned cracking open a new copy of 'Under the Dome'. That's one that I own, but oddly enough have not read. I'm not really sure why. Anyway, have you made enough progress to tell me what you think so far?

Everyone- I'm itching to begin a new SK experience & wandering which to start. I was thinking either 'Salem's Lot' or 'The Gunslinger'. Unfortunately I no longer own either of them (long story) & Gunslinger would be a re-read. I'm waiting on getting my requirements for a library card in my new home (45 min from my hometown, yet a state away). I do own 'Under the Dome', 'IT', 'Pet Sematary', 'Bag of Bones', & 'Dreamcatcher'. I've been satisfying my need for constant SK with my 2 collections of shorties, however it's time for a novel. Any suggestions? ('Pet Sematary' would be a re-read but it's been more than 10yrs since I read it.)

message 2616: by Dean (new)

Dean Hoban | 4 comments I haven't read them yet either although I do own them all. I'd like to start them with a shared reading group so count me in also.

Not sure if this is allowed, but received an E-Mail today from The Book People (maybe UK ONLY) where you can get the entire set if anyone wants it:-

Please delete if not allowed - apologies in advance!

message 2617: by Dean (new)

Dean Hoban | 4 comments @Sheri - started UTD last night and currently on p.50 Good, solid start and it get's straight into it which I don't think I've ever previously experienced with an SK book especially when compared to the only other (large) SK book I have read The Stand which took ages to get into as he was drawing all the characters together. In UTD they practically all start in the same place so the pace is quicker. Characters are well developed early on and I can see immediately whom I will like / dislike. Early days, but will keep you posted.

Sheri | 25 comments Thanks Dean...appreciate the feedback! ^_^

message 2619: by Sheri (new)

Sheri | 25 comments Kole- You are never butting in! :)
I think you're onto something with the group read sometime this year. I can't start until I can get it from the library but I hope it doesn't take too long to get my card. I lost my copy of 'The Gunslinger' (super bummer). I'm repeatedly seeing discussions from people interested in reading the DT series because-

- They've never read it & they are SK fans so the movie coming out has motivated them to read it
- They have no interest in the movie, but want to re-read it because it's been so long that certain aspects will be like reading it for the first time (that's me)
- Some people are very interested in the movie, & they want to re-read DT regardless of where they are in the series when the movie does comes out
SOOoooooo.... A group read sounds awesome. I say we go book by book (of course) so that everyone is near the same spot, but it would be cool to keep it laid back. For example, when someone posts on the book discussion thread, we have a polite requirement to start with what chapter & page you're on so that if someone's not there yet, they can skip that entire post but skim through the thread to find someone who hasn't read beyond the chapter/page they're on. Wow! That sounded complicated but I swear that in my head it's very simple. :D *Promise*

Thoughts?

message 2620: by Kole (new)

Kole Donaldson | 24 comments Yeah I like it! And that way people can always slow down or speed up with their personal schedule. And I have no problem waiting to start the series for a bit if necessary. I'm still only halfway through The Stand, and I have a bunch of new books I just got so I won't be bored for awhile haha

message 2621: by Dean (new)

Dean Hoban | 4 comments I'm really, really liking the sound of this idea. Like Kole I have a SK book (UTD) to finish, but also have a massive TBR pile so slowing down / speeding up suits me just fine as I could have a couple on the go at the same time :-)

message 2622: by Kole (new)

Kole Donaldson | 24 comments Maybe a couple months per book in DT series. Or however fast everyone wants to go. But at least 2 months, especially for the longer ones, will make it low key

message 2623: by Sheri (new)

Sheri | 25 comments I'm game! I lost my copy of 'The Gunslinger' when I loaned it out & it never came back....and so it goes. It's on a wait list at my library (stupid movie!) so I might have to buy it.

message 2624: by Kole (new)

Kole Donaldson | 24 comments So how do we do this? Do we start a new thread?

Sheri - I think you'd like Bag of Bones. Also maybe Hearts in Atlantis. I really liked Under the Dome... much better than the TV series, read it twice. Not sure how to set up a group read of the dark tower but I'd be in.

Nice to see someone else who thinks W & G is their favorite. I loved Duma Key. Also, you should look at 11/22/63 if you haven't. I think it's one of his best.

message 2628: by Sheri (new)

Sheri | 25 comments Dan, I'm so glad you mentioned 'The Dark Half' in your list of SK reads! I absolutely loved that one! It doesn't seem to be all that popular & it's not really in his "Greatest Hits" list- if there could ever be such a thing, but I read it a long time ago (it seems) but I can still remember how I felt when I finished it.

Sheri | 25 comments Ah! Mmicee-- Amazing wonderful things await you! 'IT' is a super creepy one to begin with but an awesome place to start your SK experience. I look forward to your review when you're finished.

mrbooks | 1469 comments Hmmm fantasy and Stephen King, there isn't much out there. You could read Eye of the Dragon and the Talisman. Not fantasy and not really horror, you could read The Green Mile those are a few off the top of my head, maybe the darkhalf as well.

I just wanted to chime in to say that I think Eyes of the Dragon should be your first read! If you like fantasy best, that's probably perfect for you. :)

No problem! Happy reading. :)

message 2645: by Nick (new)

Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments I vote for eyes of the dragon too, but after that, you might try Joyland. It's a murder mystery with a cameo appearance by a ghost, but the focus on the amusement park is pretty good and it's a nice easy read. No horror at all.

message 2647: by Michael (new)

Michael Pierce | 1 comments Hello all,

My name is Mike and I became a voracious reader in jr High after discovering Tolkien and TLOTR series which I read multiple times over the next 20 years.

By 9th grade (1981), I was reading about a book a week, mostly fantasy and just getting into horror when my my best friend gave me 'The Dead Zone'. That started a period of years during which I couldn't get enough of King. By then, his first half dozen books or so had come out and I was lucky in that my father was a fan so didn't mind buying books for both our use. I read the original version of The Stand as my 4th or 5th SK novel and it quickly became my favorite novel to this day. It didn't take long before I had caught up to the prolific Mr King so I filled the gap with other horror authors and became a big fan of Koontz, Barker, Straub, Brian Lumley and Robert Mcammon who's 'Swan Song' I would recommend to anyone who is a fan of The Stand. Eventually I read the uncut version of the Stand and loved it just as much as the first read and kept going at each release until I stumbled with Insomnia.

Like many of his releases before it, I was buying the novel immediately upon release, pulling the paper sleeve off and diving in immediately. Insomnia was no different but something happened that had never happened before. I lost interest in the story about a quarter of the way thru. I wondered what had happened to me as I felt like a traitor and I knew it was me and not King's writing. I put it down and read some other authors for about a year before picking it up again. This time, I actually enjoyed it and completed it very quickly and proceeded to go thru the next few novels as usual, quickly and with great enjoyment.

By the time of 'Bag of Bones' in the late 90s, I had been climbing the proverbial ladder of leadership at work putting in far too many hours, had completed rounding out my family with 3 boys and was rapidly falling behind in my reading so was once again, reading out of order and not upon release. As with 'Insomnia', I struggled with 'From a Buick 8' and saw my avid reading come to almost a complete halt as I worked hard to complete the college degree that I had been too lazy to get years before.

At some point in the late nineties I had read and really enjoyed the 'Gunslinger' but had gone a number of years before starting the second in the series so re-read it and then started the second novel. I enjoyed the first three though now was taking quite a bit of time getting thru a novel, partly because I wasn't reading a lot and also because I often had (and still do) several novels in process at the same time. This sounds bad but I'm only on book 5. I enjoy them but again, my appetite for reading novels in general hasn't been the same since completing my degree work. There is a lot of un-read King waiting out there for me and one of the reasons I joined this group, was to hopefully help me get kicked back into gear as I miss the anticipation I had for so many years awaiting the next SK release...
Cheers
