Brenda Heins (punkyheins) | 2 comments Hello my name is Brenda. I am definitely Stephen King's #1 fan, and I have most all of his book, but I am ashamed to say I have not read all of them yet. I have committed to reading 50 books this year. I was starting to read all of his books in the order he wrote them last year and fell off the book wagon.

Horror is definitely my genre! I am also an aspiring writer and have two horror novels that I am working on. I'm going to read a lot of different types of books for this year's challenge. While it is good to read in my favorite genre, for writing I have been advised to read all. So maybe I'll alternate one horror and one something else.

Brenda, I love your idea! I am not reading them in order, but I have printed off a list of all his books, and my goal is to eventually cross them all off. I do mix in other books as well. Good luck getting through it all!

Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments Glad you're here, Arbaaz. I think you'll be tied up for a while in that quest for the dark tower. Start with The Stand, quite an adventure there... after what is nearly the end of the world... and don't miss IT, Cujo, and Duma Key.

Hi, Matt! Welcome. I read the Shining for the first time last year, and it blew my mind away. It's definitely one of my favorite novels of all time now- and the movie will never satisfy me again, sorry Kubrick. I also read the sequel Doctor Sleep, and it is definitely worth a read!

Hi, Arbaaz! I love Salem's Lot, it is one of my most favorite novels! And if you read the Dark Tower, you'll be glad you read this novel beforehand :)

I also really like Desperation. May I recommend the related book the Regulators for after Desperation? Here is the google description: "The Regulators is a novel by Stephen King under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. It was published in 1996 at the same time as its "mirror" novel, Desperation."

Welcome to the group!

Marco | 0 comments Hi all, I am 32 and live in Germany and have been reading King for about 17 years now. My first was Needful Things, accidentally bought at a bookshop sale and it got me hooked.
For some reason I have always pushed the Dark Tower away but with the movie news around I decided to get into it. About to finish Wolves of the Calla and actually enjoying it. I joined Goodreads a while back and then didn't have any time for it anymore but I am now back and looking for friends as well so I would love to hear from you.

Hey Marco. Better late than never! No harm putting the DT off if you read other SK stuff in the intervening years as they all (mostly) feed into the DT. :) And I can tell you now the books are better than whatever they do on the big screen!

message 2230: by Mario (new)

Mario Santos | 5 comments Hello everyone, I am Mario from Mexico. I joined this groug a few weeks ago, but until now I give myself the time to write in this thread.

I bought my first Stephen King book in 2015 when I was 17 years old. It was Bag of Bones, a very good one. But some years before that I read a bit of Misery, but more for curiosity of the film than the book itself.

Anyway, since Bag of Bones I have read The Bazaar of Bad Dreams, 11/22/63, Dreamcatcher, Gerald's Game, The Mist and Mr. Mercedes.

Spanish is my first language, so I have no problem reading 11/22/63 and The Mist in that idiom. All I can say is that I felt more attached to the story in those books for the use of some words. But I still enyojed a lot reading the books in english.

Until now my favorite book has been 11/22/63, mostly I loved the ending and the relationship that was portrayed in the story.

My next book of King is going to be It. I plan to read it before the movie release of this year. But first I plan to read 3 other books of different authors.

I am now a college student in Mexico, so I do most of my reading in vacations, but that will not stop me from going forward with It when the moment comes.

I didn't plan to follow a chronological order in my King's readings. Usually I just pick a random good book available when I go to the bookstore. But I am considering doing that to some degree in the future, after all I don't want to miss the references of other books that Stephen put in his stories.

One way or another, I am looking forward in the future to start the Dark Tower series, but I have read that it is recommended to begin with Salem's Slot, The Stand and others, so I sort of want to stick to that plan. Also I want to finish the trilogy of Bill Hodges.

So, I am so proud to have become a Stephen King fan and I am glad to have found a community where I can view some topics about this master. Have a nice day.

message 2239: by Chris (new)

Chris Gilley (gillatron) | 1 comments Sup! My name is Chris and I am new to Good Reads and Stephen King. I've never really been a hardcore reader and have only gone through phases of reading spouts every 6 months or year. But I randomly picked up The Gunslinger about six months ago only because I had a few extra dollars on a Barnes & Noble gift card. Just browsing I thought, "I've heard of this Stephen King guy before... Lets start with one of his shorter books and see how it goes." HOOKED!!! I loved it! And instead of continuing The Dark Tower, I decided to go back and discover what made King King. My dad told me 'Salem's Lot scared the shit out of him when he was younger, so that's what I got. Still hooked, I thought I might be able to graduate to the big boy. It. I've never read a novel as long as It. I took a break half way and blew through Misery. I am now almost finished with It and am amazed at King's literary genius. The vividness and visual detail. King's words feed the imagination so much that I have no interest in watching the movies, in fear they will spoil what I see in my head. The tangents and back stories he goes on and when you least expect it, BAM! he brings everything full circle. I plan on taking no breaks after It and go right into The Shining or The Stand. So yea, I think I found my author and hope to talk King's books and get some good recommendations. Good Reads and this group seem pretty cool so far :)

Amílcar Amaya | 2 comments Hi. My first met with Stephen King was a long time ago with his Pet sematary, the movie not the book, and enjoyed a lot. Arterial that, as I growed as a persona no reader, without reading Nay of his books, started to think that ir Stephen King was that popular, something bad should be with his writing. You know "popular can't be good".

I was so wrong. The first King book I read was "It", that book is a piece of work. Bit I liked it a lot. After that, well, here I am in a Stephen King Goodreads Group.

Welcome Amílcar - you'd probably love Salem's Lot and Different Seasons... not to mention the dark tower series.

Loraine (blueraine) Hello, I am from Kent in the UK and I have been on Goodreads since 2010. I read my first Stephen King when I was about 12 (and yes it freaked me out - it was Gerald's Game). I did read a couple more during my teen years but it is only as an adult that I have come to appreciate his work so much more. Last summer I read the entire Dark Tower series back to back and have now taken on a King Quest to read all his other books. I am fascinated that his stories have little connections and look forward to being one of his Constant Readers.

Welcome Loraine... Gerald's Game at 12? Yikes! Most ADULTS have a though time with that one. You may want to start at the begining, (Carrie, the Shining, Salem's Lot), if not try Bag of Bones or Duma Key... the later is a great father/daughter story. Also I'd be interested in knowing how 11.22.63 read to a person who didn't grow up in the US. Probably doesn't matter... it's all history.

Hi Nick. Yes at 12 it was certainly an eye opener. It was in a pile of books belonging to my parents and I was into R.L. Stine and Pike. I had heard of King and thought I would give it a go. I have read Carrie and The Shining, also Dr Sleep amongst a few others. I am looking forward to reading 11.22.63 and have held off from watching the TV series until I do. At the moment I am reading It.
