I've just finished the shining and i ended up liking it better than IT (what i thought was impossible) but there were a lot of factors that may have made me like the shining better. IT was the first "big" english book I've read and reading in another language is more difficult therefore there were parts that the pace was so slow that i found them boring and took me a lot of time to read them. The Shining was scarier and it had the just-one-more-chapter-before-i-close-the-book effect all the way through. I have to read IT again now that I am more comfortable with the language to go through 1000 pages... I also think that the charecters of both books are pretty similar on complexicity levels

Nice commentary, Sofia, and that phrase: "Just-one-more-chapter-before-I-close-the-book-effect" is classic... every writer's Holy Grail. Gotta remember that.

Isobel Scott Hi guys!
My name is Toni. I, like you, am a fan of Steven King and his writing. I also write, but my published works are not as well known. I've got about 14 of his books on my shelf, and plan on getting more.
All hail the King!

Hey Toni, welcome, and don't worry, almost no one's works are as well known as Mr. King.

Daniel Barnett | 64 comments Hi everyone,

Nice to meet you all. I really have no excuse for not having joined this group sooner. King is the guy who re-awoke my reading obsession (and elevated it to new levels) in high school. Not to mention making me want to write myself. Or more accurately, he made me realize I always wanted to write.

He knows how to tell a story like nobody else does. But you all already know that, don't you?

Josh Reed | 4 comments Hi I'm Josh. I'm 27. Pretty big Stephen King fan. My mom was a huge fan so as a kid i would read her books which is when i became a fan. Looking forward to reading and discussing with the group.

message 1909: by H (new)

H (hattie123) Hi Josh, welcome.

That's nice you can share the joy of Stephen King with your mother. My mum likes thrillers and crime novels, but I can never get her to read Stephen King, even though I know there are books she'd enjoy.

message 1913: by Simon (new)

Simon Stanton | 8 comments Hello. I'm Simon Stanton, and I'm a Stephen King fan. I'd love to be able to write like SK, but I can't. I've tried and I can't. I can write, just not like him. I love the way he writes. I think The Stand was the first SK book I read. I have to confess there are lots I've not read yet (Salem's Lot, Cujo, etc.) but I have read the Dark Tower series - and was gripped by it. Insomnia is lined up on the Kindle.

Happy reading (or scary reading!)

message 1914: by Kandice (new)

Kandice | 4387 comments Welcome Simon. No offense intended, but I don't think anyone can write like King. :)

message 1916: by Simon (new)

Simon Stanton | 8 comments Kandice - you're right, no-one can write like Stephen King (although to me Nick Harkaway's writing has a sort of similar feel.) I'd "like" to be able to write like SK, but instead must write my own way and be content with enjoying reading the work of the man himself.

message 1920: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Hi all! I'm Elizabeth. I love Stephen King's books. I started reading his works avidly 20 yrs ago. He was a great distraction for me when I was going through a divorce. Took me away from my own stuff. I've been hooked ever since.

message 1921: by J. (new)

J. Ellyne (j_ellyne) | 2 comments Yayyyyyyyyyyyy thanks to Andrew for helping me find this group! I have so many Stephen King books and I rate and review most at 5 stars. I also recommend his On Writing A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft
as the last best word on how to write excellent novels.

I think he goes beyond classification as an author of the Horror genre. My favorite novels of his I would classify as Fantasy with some elements of Science Fiction mixed in.

Cheers, J. Ellyne (Jini to my friends)

On Writing is one of the best books I've ever read on the craft and technique of writing, as well as being an insightful memoir.

Books three and four are far and away my personal favorites in the DT series. I envy that you're reading them for the first time!

message 1927: by Donna (new)

Donna MetcalfTwohig | 4 comments Hi, I'm Donna. I have been an avid fan and constant reader of all of Stephen King's works, first book read was Carrie, many years ago. My all time favorite King book is the Stand, but also love It, 11/22/63, The Dark Tower Series and The Talisman, and the short story collections!

message 1929: by Amber (new)

Amber Banks (book_hore1123) | 4 comments Hello, my name is Amber and I am new to Goodreads. Stephen King is one my favorite authors hands down, so I am super excited to be a part of this group. The characters that King creates are so complex and real and I am obsessed with his particular style of writing. I feel like no one can get me involved in a story quite like he does. I have read almost all of his novels and am actively working on his Dark Tower series (currently reading wizard and glass). My all time favorite S.K. Novels include but are definitely not limited to: Needful Things, It (of course) and Salems' Lot. His short story collections are pretty amazing as well; my favorite probably being Everything's Eventual and Full Dark no Stars.

XOXO
AB

Kandice | 4387 comments Welcome Donna and Amber!

I really love King's short stories because when I just need something quick any of them are worth a re-read and they never disappoint.

message 1931: by Jacki (new)

Jacki howdy folks - I'm Jacki and despite that greeting I'm from Minnesota, not Texas. I've been on Goodreads for a long time but just starting to interact with groups a bit. I started reading King in middle school and have only become a bigger fan with each passing year. I agree with a previous reader that no one else engrosses me in quite the same way. After reading a tough or disappointing book it's nice to go to some King because at this point his writing style feels like home and doesn't take any getting used to.

I went through a crazy period after college where I read the entire Dark Tower Series and then Under the Dome in the space of 2-3 months and totally ODed on King. His books totally get into my head and I ended up with a lot of crazy dreams for awhile... but now seeing everyone's comments here I am so contemplating starting over with Dark Tower again!

Hello Kandice. I love SK's short stories too, they are addicting. What are your favorite shorts by King? I loved "The Man in the Black Suit", "The Monkey", "Survivor Type", . Also, "The Raft" and "1408" are great classics.

Four is essentially a flashback in an old-school Western setting, which turns some people off who are eager to progress with the quest, but I thought it was a great story. Contains some of my favorite quotes of King.

message 1950: by * Jenn * (new)

* Jenn * (just-jenn) | 14 comments Hello all, my name is Jen. As most people in this group, I am a big fan of Mr. King. I've been reading him for about 20 years and will continue reading his work until I have completed his long list of titles. I'm sure I'm almost there! First book I ever read of his was Christine. I was 12 years old and it scared me enough where I had to close the book to calm down! My favorite King book would be the Dark Tower Series. I've read them twice and am sure will be back to them many more times. I am looking forward to the readings and discussions in this group. Nice to meet you all!
