Keyser Soze (truman19) Ha, good call.

Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments Andrew:

So, I've read my unfair share of all those books, and, at least according to Mr. King (for right or wrong), the only romance novel he admits to writing is the story of Roland and Susan Delgado in Wizard and Glass. There's a pretty good love story in Bag of Bones and Salem's Lot, but those are definitely HORROR novels and they both have tragic elements. As for 50 shades, I didn't mind the characters but those sex scenes were astoundingly dull and repetitions. It's like you're reading along and all of a sudden you say to yourself, didn't I just read this... and the answer is NO. It's just that she wrote something exactly like it and not very well 20 pages earlier. And then of course, if your wife does like 50 shades you're going to half to go out and invest in a red room of pain, and I'm thinking those have to be pretty expensive. :-)

message 1703: by Keyser Soze (new)

Keyser Soze (truman19) Hehehe ... thanks Nick. I'll probably hold off on the red room of pain, and King's version of romance is probably not what my wife is seeking. And, yeah, I don't think I'll read 50 Shades, but I will try a couple of 'shag hunky guy' novels such as those recommended by Lena (and have in fact I have read a couple like that already to see what my wife sees in them).

I was trying to write romantic scenes into a novel and one of the women reading it said, "Men don't know how to write this stuff, you have to read erotica written by a woman." So that's how I got into 50 shades. Someone else recommended Delicious by Sherry Thomas... really a historical romance but much better. As for King, his other best effort in this regard (in my humble opinion) is the second part of Hearts in Atlantis... again not something your wife would probably get into with all the Dark Tower references, etc. See if she'd like Sherry Thomas.

message 1705: by Cody (new)

Cody Vaters | 118 comments @Andrew, if your wife hasn't read Outlander yet, I suggest you pick her up a copy. I've read most of the series (to my embarrassment) and I'd say that's your best bet. They're also well written and highly enjoyable.

message 1706: by Keyser Soze (new)

Keyser Soze (truman19) Thanks heaps guys, really, but I have to be careful not to be suggesting to many books to my wife; she will get pissed. She doesn't need book suggestions, she find heaps and is constantly reading. I just would like her to read a King novel, and will suggest Dolores. I however, will read a couple from the genre that Cath mostly reads from, the 'shag a hunky guy' genre.

message 1707: by Keyser Soze (new)

Keyser Soze (truman19) I realised I have Different Seasons, but have not yet read it. By my post of 1 Dec I was thinking of a different collection of stories, just cannot recall what that one was.

Wayne Beer (supermanbeer) | 5 comments I'm Wayne, I've been a member of the group for a while but haven't really contributed before. I love thrillers and horror and Stephen King is one of my all time favourites. I love to read and need the excuse to read more and get the opportunity to discuss what I'm reading with some like minded people

message 1709: by Nick (new)

Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments Hey Wayne, glad you spoke up. There's a discussion of "Interview with a Vampire" going on right now... perfect christmas fare I guess :-) or get in on some of the other conversations.

Daisy | 1 comments Hello everyone!

My name is Daisy and I, like everyone else here is a huge Stephen King fan!

I'm currently reading Cujo and loving every minute of it. I've read many of his works and I especially love The Stand and 11/22/63.

message 1717: by Lena (new)

Lena Welcome Daisy! I'm a fellow Stand fan.

message 1718: by Kenneth (new)

Kenneth McKinley | 277 comments Welcome Daisy. Cujo is a dark tale written during King's heavy drinking and drug years and many King fans don't find it as favorable as some of his other works. I, on the other hand, love the story and like the darkness in it. I find it amazing realistic and, to me, that makes it terrifying.

I remember reading that King said he was so drunk during that period that he doesn't remember writing it at all... which he says is too bad because he really liked the book.

message 1722: by Jeana (new)

Jeana Kenfield | 2 comments Hello everyone, my name is Jeana. King is really the author that made it exciting for me to read. I've been on Goodreads for a couple of years but I'm really trying this year to be more active in it. I can't wait to hear/discuss his books with you guys. Especially since I'm the only one around here who reads his books so now I have someone to talk about them too!

message 1723: by Kenneth (new)

Kenneth McKinley | 277 comments Welcome Jeana. This is a great group and you'll find that not only will you learn a ton about King, but you'll also get some great recommendations of other authors that you've never read before.

message 1724: by Dylan (new)

Dylan | 28 comments Hey everyone, I'm Dylan. I am a recent Goodreads user and King fan. In the past six months I have read the Dark Tower series, Night Shift, The Shining, Different Seasons, and 11/22/63 and have thoroughly enjoyed all of them. I am currently reading Everything's Eventual (I really like his short stories) and I look forward to hearing recommendations for which King book to read next!

message 1725: by Lena (new)

Lena Dylan, welcome! That is a choice King list! I would add The Stand soon, it is as good as everyone says and believe it or not it reads fast.

message 1726: by Dylan (new)

Dylan | 28 comments Thank you for the welcome Lena. I will definitely add The Stand to the list. I have heard before it is a must read for King fans.

Kelly | 17 comments Welcome to Jeana and Dylan!

Jeana, King is the author that cultivated my love for sci-fi and thrillers. I didn't think I liked scary novels until King!

Dylan, I agree with Lena about the stand. It is at the top of the list for any King fan I think! And if you liked the Dark Tower series there are lots of his works that reference those. Some of my favorite's are The Stand and Eyes of the Dragon.

And if you liked 11/22/63 you will love Insomnia! It is an underrated gem!

message 1729: by Dylan (new)

Dylan | 28 comments Thank you for the welcome Kelly. I actually have Eyes of the Dragon and plan on reading it soon. I will definitely check out Insomnia. Thanks for the recommendations!

Ashley (joliekitty) | 9 comments Hey everyone, I've just joined but I'm a long time King fan and avid reader. I'm trying to knock a few more of King's books off of my "to-read" list this year. The Stand was the last book that I read in 2015 and I loved it!
I saw that someone mentioned Interview with a Vampire in the comments. I was thinking of trying to conquer the Vampire Chronicles this year too. :)

Thanks Nick! If I do end up crossing that off my list this year, I'll check out the discussion. I've been collecting the series for a while and I'm only missing Prince Lestat.
I was just looking at the discussion on The Stand and I'm sure I'll be checking out the threads on other SK books that I've already read.

Thanks again, I will definitely check it out sooner than later then. I started to read Interview with a Vampire years ago but that was before I'd collected the series.

message 1735: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (ineedlu) | 8 comments Hello! I've been a member of Goodreads for a hot minute, but have not been what I would call active, but, now I have a shiny new tablet, and so now, it's on! (My old laptop needs to be drop kicked or thrown out a window!)
Anyhow, Mr. King is one of my all-time favorite authors, I started reading his books back when I was a teen! I figure since I will probably be on here a lot more now that I actually have a device that works, this will go a lot more nicely! I started out with the short stories, then went into the novellas, and worked my way into really heavy books like "It" & "The Stand" --absolutely adored the characters in The Dark tower Series, I feel like they were all a part of my growing up! So, I figured I would re-introduce myself, since my first introduction is probably buried way back in the thread, or possibly even deleted at this point! I do have to say, at this juncture, I've always loved the "Dear Constant Reader" portions of the books, the Forwards, the Afterwords, and Epilogues; I always feel as though The King is talking to me! And who knows, mayhaps, he is! Muah-ha-ha! ;-)

message 1736: by Lena (new)

Lena Great intro Jennifer. Most of us are reading Bazaar right now, unless we are on library holds (like me!), but there are always buddy reads too. I know a couple are reading Misery and in a few days I maybe reading Liseys story.

Hi all, I'm William and hail from Bonny Scotland. I've been a Stephen King reader for the last couple of years and rate "The Stand as the finest of his books I've read so far. I'm quite fortunate to have quite a number of his books still to read and after I've read "Revival" I have the Dark Tower series to dive into

message 1739: by Lena (new)

Lena Hi William. I'm in the middle of the Tower myself. Wolves of the Calla next month!

Hi John, Salem's Lot is a classic, SK references the Bram Stoker influence in the book. Preferred Salem's Lot to Dracula to be honest.

message 1749: by Adrian (new)

Adrian Dooley (adox66) | 33 comments Hi everyone. I'm Adrian from Dublin, Ireland. 49 years of age, grew up reading King novels and read most,if not all, up to 20 years ago.
I lapsed from reading for many of the intervening years and have only recently bought myself a kindle paperwhite to get back into it. Just finished reading my first novel on it(Ian Rankins first Rebus novel, not a King book I'm afraid) and now I'm ready to dive into a King book.

I have both Mr Mercedes and 11 22 63 on the kindle so may start one of those. Would love to hear people's opinions on them or other suggestions, although I don't want to clog the thread up with recommendations.

Favourite Stephen King novel is probably, predictably, The Stand, although I also adored The Dead Zone and indeed the Chris Walken movie of it too.

Thanks in advance.

message 1750: by Lena (new)

Lena Great intro Adrian. Predictably, I too loved The Stand. My other favorites this far have been
Doctor Sleep (terrifying)

And The Wind Through the Keyhole (surprisingly touching)
