Lena I read at least one King a month- currently going to start the third (or fourth depending on what you are counting) Dark Tower book in September and Everything's Eventual. Your welcome to read with!

Kenneth McKinley | 277 comments Welcome Elisa and Lena. A group of us here are also doing a Stephen King Challenge where we read all of King's works in chronological order one book a month. It's been a lot of fun discovering the ones that we haven't read or revisiting ones that has been a while since we've turned the pages. Along the way, we've discovered new authors and made some nice friendships. This is a good group. Welcome aboard.

message 1453: by Lena (new)

Lena I've been doing them with a sub group of Urban Fixation:

I wanted more King so I joined this group and read Jaws with them.

message 1454: by Elisa (new)

Elisa | 5 comments Omg it's a beautiful idea! But now I'm reading another book so maybe the next moth I'm going to participate, what will you read?

message 1455: by Lena (new)

Lena Next month we are reading The Dark Tower III: The Wastes Lands and I'm also finishing up Everything's Eventual - I bought for the Dark Tower prequel story.

message 1456: by Lena (new)

Lena Catch up! Or read Everything's Eventual with me.

message 1457: by Elisa (new)

Elisa | 5 comments mh, I've never read the dark tower, but I can't start it from the third.. I'm depressed hah

message 1458: by Lena (new)

Lena Well hopefully there will be a king b.o.m for us all to read together. Also you could read Everything's Eventual with me, there's a conversation thread here for it.

message 1459: by Lena (new)

Lena A worthy pursuit.

message 1460: by Elisa (new)

Elisa | 5 comments I'm happy to be in this group :D

message 1461: by Ron (new)

Ron | 134 comments Isn't "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon" also listed on this site for a September club read? Anyone involved in reading that one?

message 1462: by Lena (new)

Lena Just saw, I'm in.

message 1463: by Ron (new)

Ron | 134 comments I'm looking forward to it, and certain I've forgotten 90% of the story.

message 1464: by Lena (new)

Lena It's 264 pages. That's not long unless it's boring.

message 1465: by Lena (new)

Lena Ah so starting with Carrie on down.

message 1466: by Lena (new)

Lena That's great! Can't wait to read your review.

message 1467: by Kenneth (new)

Kenneth McKinley | 277 comments We're reading them in order and are doing Night Shift this month and The Stand next month. Looking forward to reading it again.

message 1468: by Lena (new)

Lena We? The groups book of the month says The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon? Is there a chronology sub group?

message 1469: by Kenneth (new)

Kenneth McKinley | 277 comments A group of us on the Horror Aficionados goodreads site.

message 1470: by Lena (new)

Lena Let me check out that group!

message 1471: by Ron (new)

Ron | 134 comments How far into Night Shift is the Aficionados group at this point?

message 1472: by Aditya (new)

Aditya j-f wrote: "oh no, i meant far along the list of king books i plan on reading! this is my first time reading his stuff, so i'd like to read them as close to publication order as i can."

I had a similar plan and made considerable headway before giving up after reading Gerald's Game and Dolores Claiborne. After that I am picking and choosing which of his books to read. Hope you can finish all of them but the quality is not consistent which is to be expected with such a long career. And don't forget the Bachman books either. Some of them are pretty good.

I've read or listened to it a half a dozen times, but I'm in too. Again, the audio version is great, one of the best audio books there is .

message 1474: by Lena (new)

Lena High praise

I started "A Tale for the Time Being" in audio-book form. I like reading pages better than listening, but trying to get accustomed to it. Glad to hear there will be a bunch of us to discuss the Tom Gordon book next month!

Listening is great for long trips or commuting, Ron. It does take a lot longer to get through an audiobook but if the reader is good, it's definitely worth the time.

Everyone's reading at a different pace. Jump in anywhere

message 1478: by Ron (new)

Ron | 134 comments I will look for a copy of the Night Shift, and hope to jump in, especially since I've only read parts of it.

Aditya Ron wrote: "I will look for a copy of the Night Shift, and hope to jump in, especially since I've only read parts of it."

I think you won't be disappointed because Night Shift is the probably the best King short story collection.

message 1480: by Kenneth (new)

Kenneth McKinley | 277 comments Please do, Ron. We are having a blast with it. So many great stories in there!

message 1481: by Ron (new)

Ron | 134 comments Thank you all. I should be able to grab from my library tomorrow.

message 1482: by Maria (new)

Maria Gutier (mariagutier1) Hello all. I am a horror novel junkie and a Stephen King fan! my next King read is the Tommyknockers. :) my favorite king novel so far would be Doctor Sleep with a close second being Pet Semetary

Welcome Maria. It would be good to get your opinion of the Tommyknockers when you're done.

message 1485: by Fay (new)

Fay (fayse) | 5 comments Hi everyone, I'm new to this group, but have been reading Stephen King for over 30 years. I really can't pinpoint a favourite book, there's so many I've read repeatedly over the years. I do particularly love his older books though. I think Firestarter got to me in some way out of his older books and I really enjoyed Insomnia, out of his newer books. I am hoping to get to Lisey's Story. For some reason I've missed that one.

Lisey's Story was a really good audiobook, if you go that route.

Melissa Knive | 1 comments Hi All :)

I generally stay away from the horror genre and I prefer psychological thrillers... I'm sorry to say that I have never read a Stephen King book. I've seen some of the movies based on his books and loved them... and since books are almost always better than the movies, I have decided it's high time I read my first... I've seen Shawshank Redemption, Carrie, The Shining, and The Green Mile.

So please, this is an open invitation, what should my first book be?

message 1497: by Lena (new)

Lena Different Seasons - some of his best non gorrible work.

message 1498: by Cody (new)

Cody Vaters | 118 comments I'd say jump into the deep end with Misery, one of his best.

message 1499: by Kandice (new)

Kandice | 4387 comments The Green Mile or Different Seasons would be perfect for you.

If you like psychological thrillers give The Dead Zone a try, it's my favorite King book. Different Seasons is also a good recommendation. If you want to finally give horror a shot, you can start with the first or second book he has written Carrie & Salem's Lot respectively, both are not only among his best books but also considered great examples of the genre itself.
