My favourite book is Joyland and I never could get into The Shining. Weird, I know, please don't hate me too much.

Dave | 1 comments Hi all, I've only recently gotten back into reading and decided wanted to read some Stephen King. I'm ashamed to say I took a year to read IT, I found it hard to read in places because I just wasn't used to that writing style, but I did enjoy it. I then picked up Pet Sematary and absolutely loved it! Since then I've read The Mist, Salem's Lot, Mr Mercedes and I'm am about half way through Finders Keepers. It's definitely reignited the reading spark and I'm having a blast!

I then went on a bit of a spree and bought around 22 hard covers on Vinted, and have a few paperbacks my wife got me from the usual bookshops. My goal is to buy all of his books in hardcover, but I know that's likely impossible lol. Anyways, just wanted to say hi!

Dave

Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Blastronaut Rocks.. (blastyulbynner) | 32 comments Afternoon (evening, morning, depending on your location) all. While certainly not new to SK, I'm just a few minutes old here so please be careful with my dummy (pacifier for those in the US) and rattle and give the former a proper clean before returning it to me if it falls outta my gob (mouth for those pretty much anywhere other than UK).
Top King book for me is possibly IT but so many of the highest quality, it really is hard to pick just one.
Unusual for a King fan but, despite having almost every one just over a year ago... I no longer own a single book of his (actually that's incorrect because If It Bleeds remains) for reasons I may go into at another time. Well... there's no 'may' about it because it be something that infuriates me so.
But for now - Hello!

Thanks LTJ. Wasn't my first King book - that was Dead Zone which sold me on SK from the get-go - but yes, IT was among the first few SK novels I went at. I liked the adaptations but as is almost always the case, regardless of author, the book wins hands down imo.
A long long time since I read it but if I remember correctly it ran to something like 1300 pages which was larger than anything else I'd read at that time. A tiny bit of apprehension lasted all of 5 or 10 mins and then I fell into the hole (sewer?) and was away! There's many King books that I rate as 10 outta 10 but I've always felt that IT just edges the rest.
Nice to see someone else rating it as top SK book because many seem to go for The Stand. Mighty fine read is that one too... but the sinister clown manages to keep his (red) nose just in front... for my money anyways.

message 4978: by LTJ (new)

LTJ (ltj81) | 379 comments @Gonad: Anytime! Ah, I need to read Dead Zone since I heard such great things about it. LoL I've also yet to read The Stand but will one of these days. IT has a lot of nostalgia for me from reading the novel as a teen to loving the original movie so much. LoL then the remakes came out and they totally blew me away so it'll forever be IT :-D

Thanks for making the effort to say hello, I appreciate it. What kinda forum have I walked into here, L? It's like one of those old westerns where the gunfighter (Gunslinger?) walks through the doors of the saloon and all the chatter or/and music cease...... everyone stares but nobody speaks! Only person to utter a word is the barman... so that be your cue to ask "What'll it be stranger?"
I jest of course, I'm sure this is a pleasant place... tho it'd be cool to be the 'Man With No Name' type that one associates with old Clint. : )

Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Blastronaut Rocks.. (blastyulbynner) | 32 comments In the interests of clearing up any confusion.. my quick username change is simply because 'Blastronaut' was my original name on another Goodreads forum but I then got locked outta my account because after a time away, I'd forgot my password and couldn't change it due to profile being attached to phone number and email of ex who I'd split from last year. It was suggested that I go back to my original name so... there ya are. Just hung a couple of bells n whistles on it.
There... I'm sure y'all will sleep much better now knowing that. : )
Seriously tho... don't want anyone to think I'm one of those trolls that regularly switch names is all.

Yasmin (yasminchinelato) | 12 comments Hi everyone! I'm new here, I just found this group. I'm a big fan of Stephen King's work - he's one of the authors who always appears on my "currently reading" list. Although some people may view him as controversial, I absolutely love his writing and the way he constructs the atmosphere of a story. Some of my favorites are 11/22/63 and The Green Mile. Right now, I'm reading Doctor Sleep.

Ya can't go wrong with Doctor Sleep, Flora. For my money, along with The Institute.... they're his best efforts from last ten years.

With ya on Doctor Sleep, Julia. And I was blown away when I read Dreamcatcher! Doesn't seem to be one of the main favorites with fans but for me, it's an incredible read. Up there with his very best imo. I never watched the film. Was wondering how they reproduced the 'mental warfare' type stuff on the screen? Or did they just leave it out?? That's if you've watched it of course. Dunno why I just assumed you had. : )

Just being silly. Goes without saying that you have no obligation to welcome every single person that joins. But ya surely don't want little old me sitting in a corner all left out n all? Or.... maybe ya just don't suffer fools eh? : )

Cheers m'dear, I do try to lighten things. I'm best put to use when a discussion gets heated.. and then starts to turn ugly. I tend to try and throw some silliness into the mix... not so much with the expectation everyone stops growling and starts laughing (I only wish I was THAT funny) but more in the hope that my inane ramblings catch the attentions of the posters who are grumbling, for just enough time for them to chill a little and maybe even leave it at that.
Until any such occasion arises, you can keep me in the broom cupboard if ya wish. : )

And re Dreamcatcher - if they omitted the head stuff from the film altogether, I find that a bit of a crime. I really enjoyed the psychological siege stuff. Was very impressed with the picture King painted of it for us. Genius no doubt.
