Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments I got interrupted moving the nominations yesterday. I will catch up after a cup of tea.

Remember, the prize is for coming up with a good reason, if you can put a great spin on a terrible book you could still win.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments How many are you choosing? Four, like you usually do?

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Yes, four.

The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark

I loved this book as a kid and I recommend it because without it I would never have learnt not to be scared of the dark. If Plop can do it so can I!

I vividly remember telling myself that one night after reading a bit of it and I turned my bedside light off and never looked back. Until I saw the grudge that is. Perhaps it's time I read this book again...

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

This is the first of 5 in a series called 'The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants', a young adult series.

The series follows Lena, Tibby, Carmen and Bridget. 4 best friends, all born around the same time, who find a pair of jeans that fits them all, even though they are all different sizes and shapes. They are linked by the 'magic pants' and share them (: Each gets a week with the jeans.

I love this series (almost as much as I love Gilmore Girls!). In this book, they are all off to different places for the summer. Lena to visit family in Greece, Tibby is staying home to work, Carmen is visiting her dad, and Bridget is at "soccer camp". It's funny as well as moving; I was both laughing out loud and crying when reading these (:

You really get to feel that you know the characters (: It's a lovely story, and not cheesy!

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments Aw, yes Katy. I've been wanting to read that series for ages. Are they anything like the movie? I freaking love the movies.

Yeah, they are (: The characters are so beautifully written. I love the movies too! The second one always makes me cry! haha

That one has a "look inside" bit. It's written in the same chatty way as its shown in the movies (:

Katy | 2662 comments How can anyone not love a book with lines such as:

"They were noble pants, but unassuming. You could glance over them and just think,'OK, pants,' or you could stop and really look at the beautiful complexity of colours and seams. They don't force you to admire them. They are happy just doing their basic job of covering your butt without making it look fatter than it actually is."?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Funny. I was thinking of travelling pants yesterday.

The comfy trousers I usually wear on flights aren't going to be warm enough this time. :(

I see what you're getting at. Charles Dickens must rue the day he died too soon :)

The Once and Future King by T H White.

This was a key book for me too. Great choice! I shall think about a different one.

message 63: by Jean (new)

Jean Gill (jeangill) | 26 comments It's not available as an ebook :( but 'The Eight' by Katherine Neville The Eightdelivered everything that 'the Da Vinci Code' promised (and didn't, in my view), and 'the Eight was published earlier; an intelligent, page-turning historical mystery, with conspiracies, codes and a gutsy American female lead character.

As an ebook, how's about this one... have you ever felt you were half wolf, half-human, rejected by both societies? That your parents don't understand you and you should have been brought up by a panther and a bear in the jungle? If so, then 'The Jungle Book' by Rudyard Kipling will help you find out who you really are...

Forget Disney. Be careful not to settle for the cut versions. I mean the original Jungle Books, 1 and 2, which are available as free ebooks from 'classics' sites, and are really a collection of unforgettable short stories, including all the ones about Mowgli. The Jungle Books

Thanks Patti. I'm fine, thanks (blush) Spending a quiet month at home before we set off across the world again.

I should make it clear that I am willing to take the credit for anybody's nominations. :-)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Wow. Weird hearing you're at home!

We are too. For a few days.

Just sorting a short break to Morocco at the moment.

Hmmm...I really should think of a book to reccie. I need more hours in my days.

I loved these books! I'm going to find them so I can read them to my kids. Thanks for this.

P.A. Fenton (pfenton) | 151 comments Incredible, I thought of a book to nominate (Reasons to Live by Amy Hempel, best short story collection I've ever read), and it's not in the Kindle store. Then I thought of another (The Princess Bride), and it's not in Kindle format either. How can the Princess Bride not be digitised? This is going to be hard. Back to the bookshelf.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments OK, I'm closing this thread now. Winners soon.
