When adding a new author and the name listed on the book is (ex. John P Smith)...no punctuation after the middle initial. Should we list it as it appears on the book, or should we add the period and list it as (ex. John P. Smith)? Thanks.

And need a combine author page. Just another librarian added Japaneese author name. But I don't have permission to edit information.Risa Wataya & 綿矢 りさ
Thanks!
It is perfectly acceptable to a author page in English and Japanese - it does not not need merging. The English name should be the primary and the Japanese added as a secondary on the appropriate editions

It is in fact accepted practice, and merging such profiles often undoes many hours of other librarians' work.

I have a question for the more experienced librarians...I found an author that currently have 4 author profiles. Some books are only listed under one of the profiles, whereas different editions of some books are listed under two or more of the profiles. Can we combine all of these to one author profile (so that we also can combine editions of the same book)?
The author is Viveca Lärn
Alternative profiles: Viveca Lärn Sundvall, Viveca Larn, and Viveca Larn Sundvall.

They are merged
Re, #60.Hmm - not all her works are published as Viveca Lärn. For example http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15..., is clearly Viveca Lärn Sundvall.
http://www.worldcat.org/search?q=Mimm...Actually looks like it has been published both ways.
Viveca Sundval can be added back as an "also known as" author. Listed second so the editions can be merged.
I'm fairly new to this librarian thing so I hope this is the right place for this.http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...
also has written under at least 2 other pen names I can find
http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...
and
http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...
Any way to put them together? He claims both those pen names on his website http://michael-llewellyn.net/
Re #64To put them together, you put a cross reference in the description field of the AUTHOR profiles. All profiles remain separate, but say something like.
"Also writes -genre- as -name-", and try to make -name- a link for the name, e.g. author:NAME|123123123123 or whatever it should be.
Whatever you do, do NOT merge pennames with the main author name :)
Thanks. I fixed the two pen name profiles but I can't put anything on the main author profile. I get this message. "Sorry, this author is on Goodreads and is responsible for editing their own data. If you see a typo or other error, you may want to report it in the Goodreads Librarians Group."

Then leave it - if they have joined the GR Author program(me) we as Librarians do not have permissions to edit their profiles. Rivka will OCCASIONALLY amend profiles, but only in exceptional cases, which I don't think this is.
How do you edit the name of a co-author? Under my name (Laura Lee) there is a book called Exploring the Indigenous Worldview by Vine Deloria Jr. with a Laura Lee as co-author. I've had this come up a few times where a book with a co-author of my name comes up under mine and I do not see any way to edit the co-author field, only to delete the name. Is there a trick to doing this?
You can bump it up so it shows in the main author, save it and then change it back. But deleting it and putting it back with the correct disambiguated manner might be just as easy.
