message 819: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments I'm going to say something right now that may upset some people and it is going to sound a bit like I'm whining....because well I kind of am. I know I'm not the only one feeling it though.

I'm really not liking that the fastest people always get to suggest songs. I understand wanting to reward people for being fast but isn't that what the extra points are for finishing fast?

For those of us who are slow readers it hurts that we can never be fast enough. This is something that is supposed to be fun but I'll be honest it isn't fun for those of us who have no hope of ever being first done. I know I'm not the only one feeling this way since I know at least one player dropped out from the pressure they felt (whether it was real or not)

I've been thinking on this and what kind of solutions could be made for future rounds. ONe of them which might be too complicated is that at the start of the next round every player puts in song suggestions for the weekds. So if it was 4 weeks we give 4 suggestions then maybe randomize from the suggestions given for each week to make the 5 or so possible songs for each week then use randomizer to get the song. If a player drops out we can just let player that takes their place give new suggestions. I don't know just a thought.

I don't know maybe I'm the only one feeling this way and it is a pity party for one. But I'm not enjoying this challenge as much as I should because of it. I can't actually sit back and enjoy my books because there is so much pressure to just finish it (no my team is not putting any pressure on me). All I know is I wont be playing another round if rewards are only given for those that are fast. Just isn't fair plain and simple.

message 820: by D.G. (last edited Jan 29, 2013 09:01AM) (new)

D.G. Don't feel bad for voicing your opinion, Melissa! I definitely agree that using only one criteria for picking of songs is not fair to those that can't meet it. At the same time, it made sense for the mods because that way they get the songs timely every week - after all, they have lots of prep-work to do to make sure they understand the links before they advice us what to do.

Your solution of having everybody suggest songs in advance is a really good idea. There's a chance that we all get to participate and at the same time, the mods get the songs with sufficient time in advance that they can do all the planning they need. :)

I'm sort of resigned not to pick a song because I'm not the fastest reader in my team and our team is trying to maximize points (not speed). I don't feel bad about it but then, we're having a great time and I don't think that anybody in my team is pressured. At least I really hope so!

message 822: by Dawn (Kat N Hat) (new)

Dawn (Kat N Hat) (katnhat) | 506 comments Melissa, I am coming from the opposite side of the fence but I agree with you.

The first week it was kind of fun to pick a song. The second I put way to much thought into it. And now I would be ok not picking again. Yeah it would give me a slight advantage if the off chance my song gets picked. But I think everyone should get the chance to nominate a song.

As for the rush, I know it probably won't mean a lot coming from a person on the team that is finishing fastest, but I am sincere. Finishing first isn't anything more than bragging rights. We haven't been the highest points in the last two weeks and we are not in the lead point wise. Last week I think for over all points we were 4th place. You should read for enjoyment not the pressure of it. I know I come across as competative, but it is all in the fun of the game.

message 823: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments Dawn, I completely understand. I'm not saying there something wrong with being competitive. I like being competitive with the points. I do think reading fast should be rewarded but I think points would work. Maybe have individuals make extra points for when they finish plus extra points for the whole team for when it finishes. The other thing is maybe randomize and give each team a week to suggest. That way everyone has a go at it.

message 824: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) I agree completely that you should never feel bad about letting everyone know how you feel, Melissa. Things should be out in the open.

The game should be fun and if there are players feeling pressured and not enjoying themselves then we are missing the point.

I also second Dawn's point about being OK with not picking again - the first time was cool because we were first but I'd much rather let others have the opportunity than pick again and again just because our team reads faster. I like the idea of everyone picking a song in advance and having the randomizer choose from that pool.

message 825: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments Oh and to clarify when I said round. I dont mean for it to change this cycle. I mean for future rounds of doing the challenge. I understand not changing mid-challenge. I plan on staying with my team. I'm just not keen on doing the challenge when it starts up again.

message 826: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments Thanks everyone. I knew I was whining but I felt like something had to be said. Especially since "having fun" was part of the rules. Thanks for not jumping on me for speaking my feelings. :)

message 827: by Mary X (last edited Jan 29, 2013 09:39AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 752 comments I think having all players submit a song before the game starts is a good idea. In the Bookshelf Bingo game on another group, the shelves are announced at the beginning. So people have time to peruse them even though you don't know if they'll all be called and what order. The song, shelf and other possible point getters can be left as a surprise until the new song is posted. But I know I would like the chance to be able to konw the possible years and names. Just like I can set aside books for certain shelves on the Bingo game and not say read my one demon shelved book too early because I didn't know it was a possible shelf.

message 828: by Susan (susayq ~), Moderator (new)

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 6062 comments That is a good suggestion, having all players submit a song before the game starts. This is an in-going process as we play; we try to find ways to improve it for the next round. We will take this into consideration :)

message 829: by Manvir (new)

Manvir (lucyheartfilia) Personally I do read faster for challenges but the most fun I have for this game is trying to match books to the songs not being the fastest. I actually didn't like picking a song (the pressure lol). I think it would be more fun if everyone got a chance to make suggestions. Everyone has different taste in music and books so it's a good way to try something new (song or book wise).

If the same people or team keeps getting to pick songs then I feel we might end up reading the same kind of books week after week. Just my take on things.

message 830: by Bror (Abrar) (new)

Bror (Abrar) (ab2y) | 136 comments First of i won't judge next round with this round , cuz last round was very different .
But guys the rules are part of the fun (please don't throw tomatoes/other things at the A-hole) i myself not good at this , i suck at it to be specific , i have the the lowest points i think , but i have lots of fun doing my best . I just match books i already have with the songs on my day off , i think about this challenge as a way to read the most books i can from my bottomless TBR .
I don't really get anything from picking the song , i pick a song i like not a song that match a book .
I didn't say anything because it's the rules but i don't like the points system and that most of the teams members read a sucky (most of the time) book just cuz it has lots of points , but rules are rules .

And remember the award from people but the reward from god (spiritual moment) :)

message 831: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments Ab2y, you should be able to also speak up that you hate the points system. No reason to not say how you feel. I feel better just expressing how I felt. I agree that we have no clue what next round will be like but everyone should feel free to comment on what they like or don't like so that changes can be made.

Bror (Abrar) (ab2y) | 136 comments (spiritual moment?) or Denzel Washington , i vote for #2 LOL .

message 833: by Dami (new)

Dami (Damiellar) (damiella) | 97 comments I'm freely admitting that yes I like the points but only to compete against myself week on week (just that kinda gal). I don't really have feelings pro/anti the points system or song choice set up.

What I really like is being able to add to my TBR list and watch music videos I may not have come across before.

I also just like reading full stop no matter the quality of the book... (sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised usually not but sometimes I discover something just right for a certain point of time)

So basically as long as there's music involved I'd be happy.

message 834: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 728 comments Don't feel bad Melissa! I played this game last rounf too. I have to say this round was in no way perfect, but there were some improvements from the first round. I agree, though that it does not give slow readers any chance at all...(and } am one of them..like you :)) I just don't have time to read....I work 6/7 days....and am always exhausted.... I am almost always the last one finished....and this week....I still have to find a book!
I think you are right, though, that all song sugggestions(or whatever criteria) should be done by everyone...at the beginning..so that everyone can set aside certain books to fit the game. I, for one, had a hard time finding books each week, and was (again) last to pick...

That said....I did have fun, and my team did not pressure me at all, and I can't wait to play again...with more improvements :)0

message 835: by Lina (last edited Jan 30, 2013 03:34AM) (new)

Lina | 5563 comments Hi everyone :-)

I've just recently logged on the computer after putting the kids to bed, and I must admit this was the second thread I opened, so not sure what the chatter is on the team discussions, but I'll address what I've seen above.

First of all, Melissa, that was in no way whinging!! This is a work-in-progress, so we're all learning as we go, and it's a game for everyone, so I kind of love that we all get a say in how it could run... I loved that you were able to state your feelings, and then also offered a solution. I have to say, I really like the idea of everyone suggesting a song at the beginning of the game, the mods putting up the list with relevant links and then we only need to choose one from that list each week. It would mean a lot less ongoing work for us mods, it would mean everyone gets to contribute, so it would still be personal and we'd get to learn a little bit about music that other group members love. It would definitely be a lot fairer than the system we're running now. It's also not that dissimilar with how the list was compiled last round, so player would have a fair idea of what they could expect, but wouldn't know for sure until the songs were called. As Manvir mentioned, if the same people keep picking, we're potentially going to end up with the same kind of books, which is something we hadn't thought of... Excellent idea!! The only problem I foresee with it is the mods having to chase people down for song suggestions before the game can start, but we might even make it a part of the sign-on... lol, you've got my head full of options now!

I'm also going to say this, and I really hope I don't come off as patronising, but can I just say I had a little proud moment when I saw how well you all responded to that. I frigging love how encouraging everyone is here :-) OK, proud moderator moment over, lol.

I'll open this up to everyone: Are you ok to leave things the way they are for the rest of this round, or would you prefer some adjustments be made before the next song is called?

As for the points... I must admit I like them. I feel it's a fairer evaluation of progress than what we did last round, which was pretty much whoever finished first in the last week, but again, we're always open to suggestions. The mods will be opening up a thread for feedback in the last two weeks of the game, with some specific questions asked and a lot of general discussion, hopefully. It was the feedback thread in round one where we pretty much got a lot of the ideas for the changes we've made here in round 2. You don't have to wait for that thread, you can all make suggestions here anytime, it's more a central place for the mods to be able to brainstorm future adjustments with this rounds' players.

Keep the opinions coming, we'll figure out a way to go forward together.

message 836: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments CaroB, I don't think we should change for this round. But knowing that it could change in the next round does make me feel better.

I personally like the point system but I do think there needs to be a few tweaks to it.

As far as chasing down people I think your idea of having people make their song choice during sign ups is a good idea. I also do think we should allow for repeat suggestions. All it means is that it increases the odds that it would be selected. Again just my opinions.

message 837: by D.G. (last edited Jan 30, 2013 04:19AM) (new)

D.G. CaroB - For next week, aren't the 5 fastest readers not from Team Violent Violet (I don't know why I keep doing that) picking the songs? That should give some variety for next week so I wouldn't change that (I also wouldn't to give you guys more work.)

But some of the Violet Femmes have already expressed the opinion that they don't necessarily want to pick again and as they read the fastest, they will probably get to pick again with the current rules. What would you say if for the Week 6+ the mods just ask 5 random players who haven't picked?

Yep! Good idea. We'll randomize the names, pick five players, whether they've finished for that week or not, and get them to choose a song to pick from.

As far as this week goes, we're already asked 5 people to choose the next list, so it would be more from week 6 onwards.

message 840: by Gisela, Moderator (new)

Gisela (chicadorlando) | 4022 comments I like that idea D.G.

message 841: by Carrie (last edited Jan 30, 2013 04:34AM) (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) It could still be the fastest readers who pick BUT, once you have picked you can't again. Like say Susan is one of the fastest, she is one of the ones who picks this week. Next week she is one of the top 5 again, but she can't pick so the next fastest will. There could be a list of all players and check them off when they make their choice.

I do like the idea of suggestions at sign up too.

message 842: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 752 comments Or (for next round) saying that song suggestions must be received by a certain date and if you don't submit by that date you don't get a song in the mix.

message 843: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments Part of me is wondering if we should put in two song suggestions for the next round and they have to be from different decades. The reason I'm saying this is I can see a long list of things from 2000's but only a couple from the other decades. I think by doing two suggestions from two different decades we will get more variety. What do you think?

message 844: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 728 comments good idea! have 5 random people pick songs....that would definitely make it more fair.

how about for next round...each week have 5 random people pick(obviously..depends on how many people are playing!)..and then take them off the list so they don't get picked again! that is....if you don't do the song picks at the sign up time....

message 845: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments catherine that is also a good idea. It seems like most of us are in agreement of switching around evenly who suggests.

message 847: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 728 comments thanks Melissa.... :)

message 848: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 728 comments the other thing is..perhaps....take a look at some of the tbr lists...and try to find ideas that way....I mean look at more than your own list..lol :) that way we aren't reading books just to read them for points...I think that was a big thing this round. I am not saying that all theses books weren't on someone's tbr list...but that may have happened in some cases....such as poorly reviewed books....

I have to say..it was especially hard for me...because my tbr list is well over 8000 books! so it was rather like looking for a needle in a haystack!! :)

message 849: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) Lol Catherine as is mine.

message 850: by Mary X (last edited Jan 30, 2013 12:30PM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 752 comments Yeah I tried looking through my TBR and thinking of a song I loved that worked with one and it was just too overwhelming. So I just thought of some of my all time favorite and current favorite songs. I picked The A-Team by Ed Sheeran at first because a: it's my current favorite song and I just started reading the series about angels by Nalini Singh. So made sense. But another team member also picked that one and I so I submitted Mercy by Duffy because I love it and I knew Mercy and the year would be easy for people to match.

I love lots of songs that would have been really hard for people to match because of no video, oddball artist names (Gotye anyone?) or just being old. But I chose not to submit then because why make it hard on everone, including myself.
