The main character and narrator of this book is a teenage boy named Craig Gilner. Craig is a very smart boy. He gets accepted into a pre professional high school, the school of his dreams, and gets a one hundred percent on his entrance exam. He makes a few friends and even developes a crush on a girl, his bestfriends girlfriend. Not being good enough in school(compared to everyone else) and having to deal with his bestfriend dating the girl he "loves" quickly gets Craig into some trouble. Craig has depression, and as if in an instant it starts too kick in only a month after the school year begins. He can no longer eat properly, only a little bit here and there. What he does eat he throws back up within minutes. He gets little to no sleep at night and is constantly worrying about his future. Craig contemplates suicide, and checks himself into a mental hospital. Craig meets many strange and different people while admitted. These people give him a different perspective on life and make him very thankful for the life he has. As you read you see Craig change into the person he is really supposed to be, without his depression. If you want to know more about the people he meets and how he gets better read more!
I give this book five stars. I really enjoyed this book because I myself have experienced the same things Craig goes through in the book, and it felt good reading about Craig getting better and finding himself in the process.I like how the author is very descriptive, it's almost as if your in the hospital with Craig the way he describes every little detail. The one thing I didn't like about the book was the slight sexual content. I think the book would've been a lot better without it, however it did build some depth of Craig's feelings on intimacy. I would recommend this book for ages fifteen and above, considering the mature content. Readers should be prepared for an emotional ride as you travel through depression from Craig's point of view.
