This sounds like it could be one of Sheri S. Tepper's books. I'll take a look at her works and see if I can find it.

and The Lost Treasure of Talus Scree, which has a country/society named Talus Scree.
Neither is by a female author, however.
If it's a book by Tepper, my first guesses would be either Grass, Six Moon Dance, The Family Tree or A Plague of Angels. Most of Tepper's books are told from a female POV, though -- but it sounds like the protagonist of Dubbs's book is male?

Sorry, the more I think about it the female was the protagonist, it seems like it was told from her point of view, what do they call it first person omniscient. I remember one of the reviews on the book cover seemed to indicate the author was fairly new which doesn't seem to fit with Tepper. Thanks for the help, this has been bugging me for months. I've been doing random title searches at the library of congress for outlander/outworlder/offworlder. I think the title was something like that but I cant be sure.

Definitely had a green cover with one of the scree? on it as well. The book had an environmental feel to it because the local inhabitants were very careful not to disturb the scree, if that's what they were called. I remember the exiled spacer had to take meds because his body didn't efficiently process local food and the locals had a green tint to them. They were also very dismissive of outsiders who apparently never lasted long (died). Thanks for your help.

Thanks so much, appreciate all the help.
