Kaje Harper | 17376 comments This thread is for nominations for the YA LGBT book that you would like to see the group read in December 2012.

Anything we haven't already read is welcome. Please post a link to the book, copy the blurb, and give us a few words about why you think this would be a good choice. Extra points this month for short/fun/holiday stories as people will be busy and perhaps stressed.

Books that lost a previous vote are more than welcome to be nominated again, and authors are allowed to nominate their own books if they feel moved to do so.

Kaje Harper | 17376 comments *The poll is now CLOSED : http://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/75...

And we have a winner - Sock it to Me, Santa! Sock it to Me, Santa! by Madison Parker .

Just for a laugh, the other two tied AGAIN.

In an arbitrary decision, because I'm a mod and I can, we're going to have both of the others as January Books of the Month. You'll all have holiday gift cards, and many of us will have dreary weather and time to read two books. It will be perfect. (Plus I won't have to think about a poll right around the holidays:)

So Kamikaze Boys by Jay Bell and Beggars and Choosers by Mia Kerick will be joint Books of the Month for January 2013

Kaje Harper | 17376 comments I'm going to nominate Sock it to Me, Santa! Sock it to Me, Santa! by Madison Parker by Madison Parker

blurb: Ryan is assigned to Jamie Peterson for his class's secret gift exchange. If word gets out that he has to make a handcrafted gift for flamboyant and openly gay Jamie, Ryan will be the laughing stock of the school. It's a good thing no self-respecting boy would be caught dead in a craft store, because otherwise he'd be at risk of being spotted when his mom drags him to her weekly craft workshops. He hopes Jamie will appreciate all the trouble he's going to for this assignment. Finding the perfect gift is gonna be tricky. Jamie deserves something good, though, after all the crap he has to put up with at school. At least, Ryan tells himself that's the reason he's putting so much thought into the gift. It couldn't be that he has feelings for Jamie, could it?

*I've been seeing some nice reviews and it sounds like just the thing for this month.

Kaje Harper | 17376 comments K reminded me we had two books that tied with The Fox's Mask last month and only lost on the coin toss. It would be no more than fair to give them one more look:

Kamikaze Boys Kamikaze Boys by Jay Bell by Jay Bell

Blurb: If the world is against you, don’t give up. Find yourself a kindred spirit. Then you can start fighting back.

They say Connor, the one with the crazy eyes and creepy scar, tried to kill his old man. Lately he’s been seen hanging out with David, the gay guy who always eats lunch alone. They make an odd pair, the loser and the psychopath, and bad things happen to people who mess with them. Not that Connor and David are looking for trouble. Even when taking on the world, they seem more interested in each other than fighting.

Kamikaze Boys is a story about breaking the chains that bind you and using them to beat down anyone that gets in your way. Better yet, it’s about holding hands with the guy you love while doing so.

-this book is by the talented and becoming well-known Jay Bell, and has some very positive reviews from group members.

Beggars and Choosers Beggars and Choosers by Mia Kerick by Mia Kerick

Blurb: After a hard life filled with experiences he’d rather not remember but can’t forget, Brett Taylor decides he doesn’t need anyone or anything. He gets a job at a bar in a nothing little town where he can fish and race dirt bikes and hide from the world. So naturally as he’s walking across the parking lot at his new job, reminding himself how self-reliant he is, he meets someone he can’t shove aside.

Brett can’t help but admire Cory Butana, the kid who lives above the bar where his father is the principal bartender. Unwanted by either parent, the sweet, personable Cory grew up neglected and hungry for affection. Now he’s determined to make something of his life, even if he has to work himself ragged to do it.

Cory shouldn’t have to suffer like Brett did, and Brett wants to lend a hand. But when their relationship evolves into something Brett isn’t ready to need, he reacts… and the consequences may destroy their fledgling future. With scars like theirs, forgiveness is never easy.

-less well known, but also with good reviews from a couple of people whose taste I tend to agree with.

Byron (byft) Hmmm it's almost unfair to put those two books up against a christmas read..

Well, they can be nominated again another time, definitely. I agree short and Christmassy has an advantage. But without them there is no vote, because I put up the thread kind of late to solicit choices (oops.)

Byron (byft) O_o no it wasn't to late, December was FAR to early!! :p

It was one of three books that tied in the vote, twice, last month. Thanks for the recommendation.

message 17: by Mia (new)

Mia Kerick | 76 comments I'm Mia Kerick, the author of Beggars and Choosers. Can I vote for my own book? (I'm new here!) Can I be involved in the discussions about the book? Just so you know, my ego is very small, and I will not be offended by comments that criticize the book. I really want to learn how to improve for my next novel. In fact, the comments on Goodreads, from the readers of Beggars and Choosers, affected the direction I went in the sequel, Unfinished Business. So, even if I can not be involved in the discussion, I will follow it and learn from the comments.

Absolutely vote for your own book :) We even let authors nominate their own books (although it's nice when someone else does that for you) and the voting is open-door. Good luck (as Byron pointed out, competing against a short holiday story may be tough, although I will say - having sneaked a look - that it's pretty close right now.)

If it wins, you are welcome to as much participation as you like. Look back at other BotM threads if you like - some authors did, some didn't, some of course aren't members.

Byron (byft) Mia, even if your book doesn't win, your always welcome to participate... :)
