So I've been studying genetics, among other things, in my science, and would like to write a new kind of science-fictiony type story.
I'm thinking a few main characters who have mutations that give them strange abilities and yet serious drawbacks. Absolutely no plot ideas. Here's what I have:
Charrie 1: Maylin
Descrip: tall, black hair
Advantage: Amazingly fast runner
Disadvantage: Overcome with sudden, debilitating headaches, during which she loses control of herself
Also, other charries would be appreciated.

Madeline 1. leave the way they got these 'mutations' a mystery until like between the middle and the end.
2. have kinda strange or not-used-as-much names
3. mutation idea: looks that kill lol

Thank you so much! To be honest, this is the first time I've ever attempted a longer story in modern times. I'm not exactly sure how I'm going to have them meet. That's the next idea. Maybe they should meet online, or on a plane or train somewhere, or perhaps a literal collision. Those are always fun.

message 4: by Madeline (new)

Madeline yes they are indeed. another fun one is when they are doing the same thing but dont realize it. for example, they could be trying to destroy the company or whatever that made them 'mutated' and then run into each other that way. oh, oh!! there could be a person whose ability is to be able to tell that other people have these abilities and s/he could gather them all together.
sorry i know this is a lot but if you dont please tell me i wont be offended or anything. :)

message 5: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) Well, online wouldn't work, because generally people are overparanoid about internet safety.

Literal collision would be fun, but not really effective, because you don't ever actually talk to the person who you run into on the streets. Maybe you check your pockets to make sure that they didn't snatch your wallet, but you don't actually talk to them.

People also don't really talk to strangers on planes/trains/busses, because people who are alone are reading or talking on a cell phone or staring out the window, and other people are together and talking to each other.

The only way literal collision would work is if it's a car collision, and both cars are damaged to some point. Except then there would be angriness between them, and that would delay the plot.

You could have one of them be 'that new person' at school or work. Or they could meet on some sort of sports team, or at a club of some sort (maybe they're into cooking or crafts or scouts)

Thank you, Roni. I appreciate your experience and advice.

I was thinking (I know, dangerous) about the source of their mutations. It would have to be natural, I would really hate to follow the "Max Ride" phenom. I mean, fanfic is good, but I can't, and won't, write it.
But the thing is, there has never been a GOOD genetic mutation. So this one might be dormant.
This group is dying! It's saddening!

message 20: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) Hmm, genetic mutations... Well, don't give them six fingers, because that isn't a mutation; that's a dominant trait that very few people actually carry.

Ooo! Wouldn't it be cool if somebody was a third gender! They weren't male or female... They were something else, which was caused by a mutation of on of the X chromosomes or the Y chromosomes. (I'm pretty sure that you need at least one X to be semi normal... there's a bunch of genes on there... like the gene for blood clotting). So maybe they have a bizarre shaped chromosome, like a B. Or an M. Or an O, or something along those lines.

message 21: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) There is something like that, I think.

Carole (cbusedtousethis) | 138 comments Mod
Oh my. If you find out about it, let me know.
Has potential. Thanks, Veronica.

message 23: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) No, it's like people 'believe' they are a third gender, because they don't feel like they fit into either man or woman.

Oh. I see.

like a person was a Gnome? Or like something was a Shmoo?

I think the six toes thing kind of freaky.

message 27: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) There's this tribe somewhere that all have 6 toes or something.

Another mutation is being short.

message 29: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) Lauren, that is believable, because if those people all have the dominant trait, then it's plausible, seeing as they wouldn't be marrying people from outside.....

message 30: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) yes, very isolated. Like, how isolated villages, all the people have similar features, because it's all the same genes.

Carole (cbusedtousethis) | 138 comments Mod
That's one of the ideas about how the whole world could've been populated after the flood: the different children of Noah went to different localities, and the gene pool was so concentrated, which caused different skin colors and stuff.
I don't know.

message 32: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) Different skin colors could not have occurred from the genes of two people unless they were mixed race. Even then, many more people then 2 are needed to create a healthy gene pool.

Carole (cbusedtousethis) | 138 comments Mod
Like I said, I don't know. It's an intriguing idea, though, as a mental exercise, to ask how it would affect a marriage, being stranded alone in the wilderness, and all.

message 34: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) I think someone might not make it. XD

message 35: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) Eh, Jesus was black anyhow. I'm just wondering how we ended up with white people...

message 36: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) He WAS! And people get made when I point it out. X)

He was probably more brownish, actually, because he was born in Canaan. And it's rather comforting, to me, because it's a reminder that God loves everyone.

message 38: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) For me, it's a fun fact to tell people when they have pictures of a white Jesus with blonde-ish hair and blue eyes. X)

Carole (cbusedtousethis) | 138 comments Mod
Yeah, sometimes it's hard to think of, when that's all we've been exposed to.

message 40: by korrinamoe (new)

korrinamoe Those are just artist interpretations. I don't know why people make a big deal out of what color everyone is. It's not like we're not all people!
