Aimal Khan (aimalkhan) | 69 comments Salam Yusra and welcome to the group.

I read The Kite Runner in 2006 so it was a long time ago and i am struggling to remember most of it. i have no problem with its narrative or how its written. In fact, i would say its a very well written book but i have become to dislike the message and how the story is deliberately written to manipulate the reader's emotions in a dishonest way. Most of the major turning points for Amir to redeem himself felt ham-fisted. for example when the *spoiler* Assef the neighbourhood bully of all people turns out to be the taliban commander and Sohrab shooting his eye with a slingshot to fulfil his father's own threat to Asif. I felt that Asif was such a cliched villain. A half white sociopath pedophile rapist drug abuser racist nazi taliban commander.... geezzz give me a break.

I also didn't like the way Baba was portrayed. I mean.. i am a pashtun myself and fathers in the 70's did not act like Baba. But that's a topic for another day. Baba is supposed to be this wise and enlightened man who fills Amir's head with all sorts of moral lessons. But then we find out he has an illegitimate son. ( to be honest i had anticipated this twist from the beginning too) Baba's hypocrisy is simple glossed over... I mean for me baba was the main villain in the story. Having heard stories about my own people, it is almost certain that the sexual relationship between Hasan's mother and baba wasn't consensual or she wouldn't have a choice in the matter anyway. Her husband was most likely the person to make the arrangements whenever Baba felt the need. Despite all this we still see the one dimensional servant characters wanting nothing but good for their masters and sacrificing their lives for them.

Its a book that appeals more to westerns because they lack real knowledge about Afghanistan and the pashtun people and because it panders to their "white man's burden". it makes them feel good about their culture and maintain an air of superiority over the uneducated savage brown man.
My friend @Muhammad Aquam summed up Khalid Hussaini perfectly for me...
"All mullahs are Taliban, and Taliban are scum. Everybody smokes. Gays are normal. Americans are angels.
Mr. Hosseini clearly giving in."

Lara Zuberi (larazuberi) | 571 comments Salman,
By different angle I mean it depicts the pain that non-jewish people went through and how many of them refused to be brain-washed by Hitler. Of course the most unique angle is the narrator. One tends to forget it along the way, but the narrator is death itself which is a very fresh perspective, even though it sounds morbid at first.
Aimal and Yusra,
I quite enjoyed reading your views about The Kite Runner. Normally I would have defended Hosseini because he is one of my favorite authors, but I must confess that you have made some very valid points. I agree that the book may have worked well in the west because it fit the western perception, but I don't think that was the intention behind the writing. (Oh I guess I felt obligated to defend him)Amir's character was very flawed, and ran the risk of being terribly disliked by the reader, but it was so real, that one was swept away. ATSS was very good too but the abuse was graphic at times. I remember how he made her eat rocks as punishment for serving him undercooked rice. Happy reading folks:)
