Wanda (wanda514) How about The Centurion's Wife?

message 2: by Wanda (new)

Wanda (wanda514) Or, maybe The Secret Lion?

message 3: by Wanda (last edited Feb 25, 2009 01:44PM) (new)

Wanda (wanda514) Sure. I have some others the other members might like - Skeletons at the Feast; One Thousand White Women; Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (I would love to read this one); Year of Wonder and People of the Book. Hope we get some nibbles.

Misfit I'd love to join in, but my library holds are taking over my life at the moment - so only if you pick something I've got on hold. I kind of follow my own reading path far from the madding crowds. However, if you pick something I've read I'll be more than happy to step in and speak my peace :)

message 5: by Misfit (new)

Misfit Well you might be sorry you asked.....

Midwife of the Blue Ridge
The Courtier's Secret (historical romance)
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir(probably not historical fiction though.
The King's Grace A Novel (library has on order, don't know when it will come in)
Wheel of Fortune
The Bronze Horseman
Figures in Silk
The Glass-Blowers (French revolution)

One book I am just finishing and will continue with Wheel of Fortune is Cashelmara. Set in 19C Ireland and America, its a big old fat multi-generational saga with a twist - the author parallels the lives of her characters with those of Edward I, II and III. Wheel of Fortune, although the story and characters are not related to Cashelmara (this one is set in Wales), continues the parallel with the story of Edward III, Richard II and on to Henry Bolingbroke.

Really really good book, I highly recommend it. Daphne Du Maurier is really great fun, you might want to consider some of her books.

Liz | 1 comments Love the idea of a group read. I've read some of the books listed but would willingly read some again (Year of Wonders for instance) I have no real suggestions, but wild be willing to try anything. How about Mistress of the Art of death?

message 7: by Wanda (new)

Wanda (wanda514) I like them all and will honestly read any of these. Just tell me what to read and when we begin. Thanks, again, Megha for the great idea.

message 8: by Wanda (new)

Wanda (wanda514) Super! I will pick up the book from Barnes & Noble on my way home and begin on Sunday. I am quite excited.

message 9: by Misfit (new)

Misfit @Megha, I would have been surprised beyond words if anyone else was willing to commit to one that size :)

I'll see what I can do about Guernsey. Someday I plan on reading it. I'm a mood reader - I'll have all my reads mapped out and then a new find comes along and upsets the entire applecart.

message 10: by Wanda (new)

Wanda (wanda514) I am picking up my book today. I am so excited! I have never been in a book club before and so I have never read a book with a group. Please just tell me what to do and I will do it. I printed out a readers guide to help me better participate in the discussion, too. I am not easily offended so, any guidance would be appreciated.

message 11: by Wanda (new)

Wanda (wanda514) Megha, I will wait for you to begin the book. Shall I wait until say Tuesday to ensure you have received your book? I don't mind at all.

message 12: by Wanda (new)

Wanda (wanda514) Misfit, will you be able to join Megha and I? I hope so; but, completely understand if you are not able to join in. Your book sounds very interesting, too.

message 13: by Misfit (new)

Misfit Wanda, I'll try but don't hold your breath. I have seven books out now from the library :)

message 14: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (mamallama) | 8 comments I just joined this group and have been looking for a historical fiction group that reads books other than English historical. I have already read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society and I am looking forward to the group discussion once everyone else has read it.

message 15: by Wanda (new)

Wanda (wanda514) Oh, Misfit - I admire your reading stamina. I can only read one book at a time. Your Cashelmara sounds unbelievably good. I will add it to my TBR list.

message 16: by Wanda (new)

Wanda (wanda514) Hi, Megha. Great news on the book. You will love it - I am head over heels in love with this book. I invited a friend to join us and it looks like Tracy will join in once we begin a discussion.

It is 5:56 a.m. here in Pennsylvania so "Good Morning" to you! If I am correct, you are about 12 hours ahead, correct? So, "Good Afternoon/Evening" too. Anyway, I am so glad you are loving the book, Megha. Me, too! I am head over heels in love with Dawsey and have told my husband he has been replaced by Dawsey. I will copy and print out the questions you have posted so that I can keep them in mind as I continue to read the book. They are great questions and I only hope I can provide sufficient answers to generate good conversation. I joined GoodReads in order to be better able to discuss books and become a better book conversationalist.

Wanda (wanda514) Hello, Miss Lois. You are not too late to join in - the month is still young and the book is small. So good to see you.
