~Thena~ (athena-nadine) | 63 comments Have you read the Elemental Assassin series by Jennifer Estep?

Spider's Bite (Elemental Assassin, #1) by Jennifer Estep

Or the Dresden Files?

Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1) by Jim Butcher

texxie-PRUFreads.blogspot.com (prufreadsblogspotcom) | 198 comments hmm...and u want to keep it paranorm?

I'll be coming back to this thread too. Curious as to what's suggested. Ya know...cause my TBR isn't overflowing already. o_O

Sarah Dizon (sarahd828) | 27 comments Unholy Ghosts is definitely a great option for this. Chess is the epitome of the anti-hero.

message 5: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin (cait1204) | 54 comments The Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones. Charley is hilarious and Reyes Farrow is definitely an anti- hero. The series while funny, has a very dark element to it.

Wan (wanwaddell) | 195 comments I just finished. Alice in Zombieland (White Rabbit Chronicles, #1) by Gena Showalter by Gena Showalter. It is different than anything I've ever read.

message 7: by Brianna (new)

Brianna | 76 comments I third Stacia Kane's Downside Ghosts series. Seriously dark, but awesomely amazing.

Alana ~ The Book Pimp (loonyalana) | 538 comments Succubus Blues (Georgina Kincaid, #1) by Richelle Mead

probably a hair heavier on the romance, but at the same time- a succubus as a hero is different, and the 'love interest' is a total anti-hero. I love the series, and it's complete already so no waiting for a new book. I also second the recommendations of The Dresden Files and Unholy Ghosts series.

You may also like: Rosemary and Rue (October Daye, #1) by Seanan McGuire - October Daye series.
Dead Witch Walking (The Hollows, #1) by Kim Harrison - Rachel Morgan series.
Beyond the Night (Envy Chronicles, #1) by Joss Ware - PNR meets Dystopian, Envy Chronicles. Very different.
Joe by H.D. Gordon - this one should be right up your alley... light romance, paranormal, and Joe (female) is very different.
Odd Thomas (Odd Thomas, #1) by Dean Koontz - this is a tear jerker, paranormal, and Odd is very different and somewhat anti-hero.

If you like YA:
Obsidian (Lux, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout White Cat (Curse Workers, #1) by Holly Black

message 9: by Julie (new)

Julie | 1 comments Try the Taeren Souls series. Someone suggested it to me and i tried them and loved them.

message 10: by Jordy (new)

Jordy (jordycrazyromanceaddict) Tairen souls is one of my favorite series. The first book was a little slow but its worth it!!! Its a must read!!

message 11: by Jordy (new)

Jordy (jordycrazyromanceaddict) Jane Yellowrock series would be my recommendation to you.

message 12: by Jordy (new)

Jordy (jordycrazyromanceaddict) Dark Swan series by Rachelle Mead

message 13: by Ren Puspita (new)

Ren Puspita (renpuspita) Try Nightwalker (Dark Days, #1) by Jocelynn Drake , the hero is an antihero, consider he want to kill the heroine since he is a vampire hunter and the heroine is 600 years old vampire. The story is told from heroine's POV. No romance so far, but I hear it will develop more in the next book. The story also have dark and horror vibe.

Michelle (quill_n_ink) | 107 comments Dominion (Dominion, #1) by S.E. Lund Ascension (Dominion, #2) by S.E. Lund
800 year old gorgeous twin vampire brothers seduce a young vampire hunter. LOVE Michel, Julien and Eve in Dominion (Book 1) & Ascension (Book 2), currently available. Retribution (Book 3) is due out on December 11.

Not all romance and fluff; includes crime, mystery and suspense. I think you'll enjoy the Dominion Series!

**Note, Dominion is FREE and Ascension is $.99 through midnight Friday, Nov 23.***

new_user | 1389 comments Unholy Ghosts definitely fits the bill.

message 16: by Joanne (new)

Joanne Brothwell | 4 comments Succubus Blues by Richelle Mead is definitely different, and the protagonist is very interesting!

Alana ~ The Book Pimp (loonyalana) | 538 comments Something just came to mind, it is YA, but it's really kinda of dark for YA.

Anna Dressed in Blood (Anna, #1) by Kendare Blake

I listened to the audiobook. It is juvenile at times, but it is also unique.

message 18: by C.C. (new)

C.C. | 219 comments I second the Fever and Elemental Assassin Series especially Fever, it is really not your typical UF, the twists are fantastic.

Darkfever (Fever, #1) by Karen Marie Moning
Spider's Bite (Elemental Assassin, #1) by Jennifer Estep

Have you tired the Brotherhood of Blood series?? The first book is Be Mine Tonight; Be Mine Tonight (Brotherhood of Blood, #1) by Kathryn Smith . There are 5 books in all. But they're Supernatural as well. But the romantic romance is there.

☔️ Stormy Day Reader (rainydayz179) | 67 comments I noticed all the recommendations that I recognized were urban fantasy. If you want to try some fantasy Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series is awesome. I barely read fantasy anymore myself but if you're looking for a change... It fits what you're asking for.

message 21: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Kenney (jennyakenney) | 38 comments The Devil Inside (Morgan Kingsley, #1) by Jenna Black

Mark of the Demon (Kara Gillian, #1) by Diana Rowland

These are both summoner series, with crime solving and paranormal aspects...little romance. They are both "gray" chracters who deal with demons and devils directly.

Mina Khan (spicebites) | 127 comments Two anti-hero stories I recently read and enjoyed:

Heart of Obsidian (Psy-Changeling, #12) by Nalini Singh Lothaire (Immortals After Dark, #12) by Kresley Cole

message 23: by Rox (last edited Jul 14, 2013 12:53PM) (new)

Rox | 69 comments I know it's not PNR but this is the most different book I had in mind :

The Silver Devil by Teresa Denys

it's a historical romance without the fluff you usually read these days , the hero is not a hero and his name is Dominique , he is a bad , unbalanced guy driven by ambition and obsessed with his woman (sometimes creepy -the guy seems to be the human version of Lothaire :) ) . It's dark and realistic and sometimes grotesque . It presents the story with all the dirty reality in that time . For example Dominique breaks a guy's legs because the heroine remarked that he was a bit taller than him ...
happy reading !

I loved both of these!

P.A. Lupton (palupton) | 909 comments I also nominate Downside Ghosts. It's an excellent series with a real anti-hero.

Also, if you want something really different I just finished Unraveling (Unraveling, #1) by Elizabeth Norris and was pleasantly surprised. It was more sci-fi than paranormal, and I usually hate sci-fi, but this was excellent. It's also young adult and I normally don't like that either, but the story was so good I loved it.

Abby | 353 comments I just started Red (Transplanted Tales, #1) by Kate SeRine which is a very interesting and different take on the fairy tales we all grew up with

message 27: by Danielle (new)

Danielle Many of the suggested titles are romance in one form or another. I am tired of trying to find a good UF book, think I found one only to discover it's really just another romance novel. Someone above suggested going full on fantasy route with the Mistborn series. I really liked the first book in the trilogy. I also liked The Name of the Wind (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #1) by Patrick Rothfuss by Patrick Rothfuss. I don't know if Vin or Kvothe are anti-heroes but they definitely have a lot of gray.

☔️ Stormy Day Reader (rainydayz179) | 67 comments I agree with Danielle, Patrick Rothfuss is awesome. I'm dying to read the next book. I like to read a fantasy book every one and awhile. It's nice to have variety.

I'm not trying to promote myself, but after reading your description I had a few titles. Some were listed here, but I have a few of my own.
-The Darkangel Trilogy
-Starving Blades
-Captive in the dark
-Prince of Thorns

I hope this helps you and I think I found a few for myself here. ^_^

message 30: by Germanio (new)

Germanio Puglio | 4 comments Hello. I am writing to promote my e-book “Lost at Glassy Sea”, by Germanio Puglio. It is a historical Romance/Fiction. IT IS CURRENTLY FREE TODAY ONLY! Here is a short description:

"Lost at Sea" is a novel which follows the lives of a young, modern treasure-hunting couple, as well as the life of a seventeenth-century teenage girl, Emma, who is accidentally deserted by her father while their cargo ship is raided by pirates. Emma is forced to live with a ship full of buccaneers for two months. She finally escapes them and gives birth to a child conceived during her unwilling confinement. Both stories end with the protagonists finding eventual happiness, contentment, and prosperity. Includes 53 chapters, with a description of 17th-century Port Royal. Contains some mature content. Recommended for age 17+.

Here is an excerpt:

“Captain Fontaine rubbed his eyes in disbelief. Coming through the choppy waves were about a dozen canoes. The were dangerously rocking back and forth in the water. The men in the canoes began shooting at his ship. A few of the crew of the Anne-Marie were shot with muskets, and fell into the water. The crew that was still alive quickly pulled up the anchor, so that their ship could flee. As they toiled, the mainsheet and brace were shot away, and the ship turned helplessly into the wind. Feeling that they had no choice, the sailors began to raise a white rag next to the French flag that rippled above them in the rain and wind. The Anne-Marie had surrendered.”

The link to the book is:

I had fun writing it, and it was inspired by my love of pirate stories.

If you don't mind something that is SERIOUSLY old, you might try finding some of the works of James Branch Cabell. Altho you will have to scour used book stores, thrift stores and your library's locked collections. He's been dead since 1958, but while alive he was quite a character. He had a number of his books banned. He wrote humour (or at least, I always found them funny) but as one of his MC's he uses--Don Miguel--the son of Satan. Don Miguel appears in 3 (I think it's 3, it's been a while) novels. And, despite his unfortunate choice of a father, he's actually fairly normal. Kind of.

Mina Khan (spicebites) | 127 comments I actually read a UF that surprised me in a good way. It's what a classic UF should be in my opinion -- gritty world (humans are the minorities and a Vampire is president), tough but likeable heroine, lots of gray areas and more.

Day Shift by Missy Jane

Anyway, if you're looking for a dark hero, RIchard Kadrey's Sandman Slim series is excellent.
