Yes Elric is a good one

Christopher Conn (cmconn) I love the Patrick Rothfuss books The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man's Fear. I think they will be really interesting to fans of Martin's books. We (Rothfuss fans) are waiting for the 3rd book of this trilogy to come out (2013? 2014?) so that gives me 2 series to wait for.

My son also recommended Brandon Sanderson's The Way of Kings which is the first book in a new series.

Kim | 13 comments I loved the Riyria series by Michael Sullivan...
Theft of Swords (The Riyria Revelations, #1-2) by Michael J. Sullivan Rise of Empire (The Riyria Revelations, #3-4) by Michael J. Sullivan Heir of Novron (The Riyria Revelations, #5-6) by Michael J. Sullivan

and the Patrick Rothfuss books as well.

Natalia (small_god) If you like ASOIAF (of course you do), it is VERY likely you'd like the Witcher saga - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Witcher - good fantasy novels and stories full of violence, sex, ironic sense of humor and characters who are complex, not good OR bad. I bet the story will absorb you. :)

message 55: by Gianluca (new)

Gianluca (gianlucag) I have tons of books on my "To Read" list, but I am currently reading the second book in the Wheel of Time series. Really good so far.

@Natalia: I've added The Last Wish to my list just the other day!

message 56: by Natalia (new)

Natalia (small_god) Good choice. I prefer the novels to the short stories though. But the whole series is really good.

message 57: by Gibbon91 (new)

Gibbon91 | 14 comments Actually I've got two fantasy series outstanding... The Wheel Of Time Saga and Malazan Book Of The Fallen Saga. The second one is very similar to GRR Martin storytelling style. Wheel Of Time is too .. heavy but also a good saga.

message 58: by Gianluca (new)

Gianluca (gianlucag) @Natalia: To be honest, I didn't actually realize it was a collection of short stories. I'll add the novels as well then, thanks!

@Joanie: From what I read, the series becomes less enjoyable around book 7 or 8. People say that those few books are incredibly slow, and not much happens. The last books are actually some of the best in the series, according to reviews. I've come across people suggesting reading book summaries instead of dropping the series, if you find them too slow, because the final books are amazing.
The first book was pretty great, and the second one, which I am currently reading, is even better so far.
I'm a fan of long books and long series, so I'm happy for now.

Prin (prncss1121) | 126 comments I've to read all the books on my to-read list before this year ends hopefully! But now I'm trying to finish The Count of Montecristo and The Kite Runner. :) well, I'll finish both if school isn't on my way hehe

I've read only five books. I can say that the first couple has a good plot and I like them. From the third book the saga starts to be more prolix. Fifth book doesn't flow. There's something that slows the entire story. For me is difficult to explain better. That's all I can say 'til now.

Christopher Conn (cmconn) Mary Stewart's Merlin trilogy is wonderful. If you like ASOIAF you will probably like it too.

Merlin Trilogy

There are 3 books or you can get them in one volume.
The books are The Crystal Cave, The Hollow Hills and The Last Enchantment. Any library should have them.

Gianluca (gianlucag) Joanie wrote: "@Johnny: Thank you very much for your advice. I have heard similar complains but reading a few slower paced books might to be worth it if the rest of them are truly enjoyable.

@Gibbon91: Thanks fo..."

You're quite welcome, and I agree. So far there's plenty of action though, and the characters are really likeable. I can see myself reading a couple of slower books for the sake of the story.

Sonja | 22 comments Nothing has lived up to asoaif so far even returning to old favourite authors like Jo nesbo has left me cold. BUT I have started reading The Painted Man and it's surprisingly good.

message 64: by Prin (new)

Prin (prncss1121) | 126 comments I feel the exact same thing... Guys do know any book that's similar with asoiaf in terms of genre?

message 66: by Eyehavenofilter (new)

Eyehavenofilter | 764 comments I will read anything, unfortunately, nothing lives up to GRRM.
I thought about reading "The Tower of the Hand" but I fear I will be disappointed?

message 67: by Sonja (new)

Sonja | 22 comments The painted man has started to bore me, I'm starting to curse mr martin for setting the bar so high nothing can compete with his writing

message 68: by Kat (new)

Kat (katsobsession) | 141 comments I re-read stuff like LOTR, Wheel of Time, and HP, and am acquiring the Malazan Book of the Fallen and the Sword of Truth to read. Also re-reading the first ASoIaF books, and anything else by GRRM I can get my hands on.

message 69: by Christopher (new)

Christopher Conn (cmconn) Check out The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss. There are 2 in the series now, waiting on the 3rd and final book. Rothfuss is a great writer, love his characters.

message 70: by Nermin (new)

Nermin (narminstaley) | 280 comments I'm currently reading the last installment in Philip Pullman's "His dark materials" series. I'm planning on reading the first law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie.

message 71: by dan (new)

dan (toeyb87) | 4 comments i had to put my bit in here. if you like martin you have to try brent weeks night angel trilogy awsome books, and also the painted man and desert spear gets a bit slow in places but sets it self up to be a epic fantasy series, and bk to brent weeks hes on his second book of the lightbringer series well worth a read if you dont mind waiting for the next books

message 72: by Sonja (new)

I love them all. It's my favorite series, actually. There are bits here and there that are a bit slower, but taken as a whole, the series is enchantingly wonderful. Let me know if you want to know anything more detailed; I'm a member of Dragonmount.com, which is one of the top fan sites for Wheel of Time^_^ You're welcome to come poke around there, talk to some more people. I'm about to start a re-read of WoT myself, in preperation for the release of the last book in January.

message 74: by Behjoo (new)

Behjoo | 1 comments As I finished the last book I was so terrified of being out of good stuff and I could see withdrawal approaching. So I searched and Searched for a Similarly Strong stuff (mostly here on Goodreads) and then began Reading Neil Gaiman's American Gods American Gods by Neil Gaiman . It does not contain the marvel and rush which the Song provides but it is really good and strong on so many levels and right now I feel really Content With my choice in it.
