Getting Amazon to lower your book's price

I'm puzzled by the current situation with Amazon price matching other ebook sales sites. Despite explicitly stating that it doesn't price match anything but cell phones and televisions,this thread implies that they can be coerced into doing so for books.
I believe that the reason for attempting this move is to get one's books to feature in their top downloads list. This would be a great promotional tool,to assist a book launch. However,I'm sure that I read somewhere that Amazon weren't including free books in this chart these days.
I'm looking for ways to publicise the release of a novel that I wrote in 2014. To raise my profile,I made all of the books that I have on Smashwords free of charge three months ago. In that time,some 3,500 readers have downloaded them. Had they paid the original asking price,I would have earned about $1,500 or £1,000 a week!
My questions are,can Amazon be goaded into dropping the price of my books to zero in 2015 ? Is there any point in doing this anyway - have any of you seen benefits ? https://paulwhybrowblog.wordpress.com/

Yes, I am pretty sure that Amazon will price match to Free however, I've heard that Amazon doesn't care much about Smashwords and that you have to have them free somewhere else, like B&N or something.
While I'm just trying this out, Free is a great way to get people to read a series, if the first book is good enough. More people are willing to try it out a free book. I know I've started reading some series because of this. Or if you have other books, if they like the writing style of the free one, they will buy your other books if the books are priced in their price range.
I've got my 2nd book under 'pre-order' status on Smashwords and people have already signed up to order it because they've read my first, which was free.

For some unknown reason they don't want to pricematch the titles I've posted. So many people seem to have reported them... :(

Very good article. Thank you for posting. I've read back a few pages of this thread, and I assume it's working for people. Most of the blog posts I've read about Amazon's strategy & policy are a few years old. Can anyone take the time to post about "the state of things" currently? Or, link a blog to something similar. This whole "report yourself" and "they'll ignore your request" and "they don't care about SW use BN" sounds awfully dubious.

Anyway, here's mine. I'll keep following the thread and I'll be happy to reciprocate on the next several posts. Thanks.

Victor, my experience was very recent, as in a few months ago, so that's as current as I can get my friend. :D

Thanks everyone for your help. After a week or so, my book still wasn't free. So -- I just emailed their customer help, told them i was planning on running some promotions for my free book, sent them a link to my free book on B&N, and told them I would like to include them in the promotions and asked them to make my book free.
They emailed me back and said they would look into it, and that they would get back to me within a week.
The next day, my book was free.
I don't know if it just took a while, or if the email helped, but my book is free now.
