I haven't read the entirety of this thread, but have you guys tried contacting kdp directly? It works for some people, although it didn't work for me. Worth a try if you haven't already done so.
I asked KDP very nicely and politely, explaining why I wanted price-matching to zero; they asked me to supply links to the other sites where the books are free, which I did, including B&N, Kobo etc etc (distributing through Smashwords); the list was fairly extensive. And they reduced all three books to free. (First one, within a few hours, then the other two about a day later). That was just a few days ago, so I'm still checking to see if it holds.

Yeah, it's kind of a black box on how many it takes to make it free. I have been trying to make more than just the first episode of my series, A Life of Death, free for quite some time. Barnes and Noble was happy to from the start, but Amazon hasn't beyond Episode 1. Hope they get to yours soon.
Thanks! I'll probably wind up using Amazon's KDP select just so I can make it free for at least 5 days in December. While it's free I can promote it online in a few places. After that it will be back to .99.Update: Nope, that won't work either since it takes 1-3 weeks to get unpublished through Smashwords, which I have to do to be eligible for KDP Select. By that time Christmas will be over. Oh, well. Not this year. I guess.
