The Translation of the Title

I find it strange that the English version of the title is so different from the original French title, "Notre Dame de Paris." When I told a friend that the latter is the correct title, he insisted, "It's the same thing!" I think that this translation does not fit the novel as well as the original because it suggests that Quasimodo's disfigurement is the most important aspect of the character. Also, the cathedral itself is truly the protagonist. I also wonder why the publishers of the original publishers of the English version did not simply translate the title instead of changing it. Has anyone else thought of this or am I just a Francophile snob?

I'm surprised no one has answered you. The problem I have with the English title is that it suggests Quasimodo is the central character, which he is not. The french title, Notre Dame de Paris or Our Lady of Paris refers to both Notre Dame Cathedral or Esmeralda. Esmeralda really is the central character in the novel, or at least one of the most important characters. The Cathedral is also one of the most important aspects of the story, most of the story happens in or around the cathedral, and the Cathedral is almost a character in the story in its own right. To call it The Hunchback of Notre-Dame really diminishes meaning of the title, and gives a false impression of the themes and story.

I kind of grouped my annoyance about Notre Dame with that but it's good to see that someone agrees with me. Parlez-vous Français par chance?
I have read that the ‘mistranslation’ was because the translators felt that adding ‘hunchback’ would better appeal to the readers who are more used to adventure novels, or something along these lines. Therefore it is reasonable to say that it was not the English translation which ‘contaminated’ other translations since they could be translated that way because of the same reason.
