Dara | 7 comments All,
I downloaded a sample of a book to my Kindle Fire, and it is gone now. I want to continue reading it, but cannot remember the name.
I believe it would be a post-apocalyptic book, given that it was recommended after reading Area 187, Wool Omnibus, the first two books of The Hollows series, and Alice in Deadland. I have done a bunch of searching, but cannot find it!
It starts off like this:
First chapter: A research team is documenting a cave in South America. Another scientist is called in because they have found what appears to be a Mayan or Aztec structure deep in the cave that has never been explored. He arrives in the jungle in a helicopter with a woman (a researcher's wife I believe) and an 18-20 year old that is the son of one of the scientists doing the research in the cave, and they all know each other. The entrance to the cavern is a giant hole in the ground, and the bottom cannot be seen from top. The scientist and the teenager have a competition to see who gets to the bottom first and the scientist wins because he parachutes down.
Now in a new chapter, we are introduced to a group of islanders. A small girl appears to be the focus of the chapter. Her family and several others are preparing to leave the island forever because a group of boats have been spotted heading to the island. This is something that they were expecting to happen, they just didn't know when, but are prepared to leave. The girl must stay behind by herself, this is her destiny! I am not sure why or what happens to the people of the boats when they land.
Next chapter, back to the scientist: Once the scientist gets to the bottom, he immediately heads to the structure. He figures out a way to get in the chamber. Inside it appears to be like a shrine. He hears sounds and thinks he sees a small girl (hmm, wonder if it's the same girl - of course it will be). Then a bunch of bugs or spiders engulf him, and I am not sure what happens after that.
I am not sure if it is a virus that is released, an evil force takes over the world, bugs that kill, or what!
Arrgh!!! Please help!!!

Dara--did you archive it somehow? I did that once with my Kindle, and found the missing book by going into my Amazon account and checking there. (This was after sending in a frantic appeal to the Help desk trying to find out what had happened.)

I don't know what this book is, but I think that when it's id-ed I'll be reading it. (I too like distopian/uf books.)

Dara | 7 comments I downloaded it as a sample and it went away before I had the chance to buy the book. I notice that now the samples stay on there, but they used to disappear after a certain amount of time. I researched it and also found out that Amazon/Kindle does not keep records of sample books...
Thank you for reading and responding! Hopefully someone on here will recognize it. I had this posted on Amazon for a few months now and received no response, so thought I would try here...

Kate (katespofford) | 261 comments This sounds a little like The Passage (The Passage, #1) by Justin Cronin by Justin Cronin - I think that one involved people exploring caves and finding some kind of bat creature in the Amazon that caused the virus.

Dara | 7 comments Hi Kate,
Thanks for the response. I have already read The Passage and this is not it. There are some similarities, but the start of The Passage is different from the book I am trying to find.

Alexafirechild | 17 comments I don't recognise the book but have you tried the history if you found it on a computer? Does the kindle have a history or keep any record if downloads? I've only got the older model so can't be very helpful I'm afraid.

Hope you find it.

Katharine

Andy Phillips | 240 comments I don't think this will help much, but the bit about the people arriving in the helicopter and skydiving into a massive hole happens in the movie Sanctum. It doesn't appear to be based on a book though, as far as I can make out.

Dara, are you still looking for this book? Was it "Excavation?"

message 10: by Dara (new) - rated it 4 stars

Dara | 7 comments No, that's not the book. I still haven't found it.

Michele | 279 comments Excavation by James Rollins maybe? Here's a quote from one of the reviews.

Excavating an archaeological site in the Andes, Dr. Henry Conklin and his group of students unearth an old mummy who was an old friar. The students are exploring the site and come across an underground passage filled with deadly traps. This site is filled with a vast richness, far beyond the important historical knowledge. All of this may appear wonderful on the outside, but inside, they may be unearthing something far more dangerous than they ever thought possible.

Dara | 7 comments Wow! The Fall appears to be the book I am looking for! I cannot believe it! It says in the description on Amazon that it has been reworked and with new content, so I can tell it is different from what I read so long ago, but the gist of the story is the same. I cannot wait to read it. Thank you so much Ayshe!!!
