In honor of our discussion of literary allusions and making connections, I would like you to describe a connection that you can make with your independent reading book to ONE of the following: 1.) yourself; 2.) another text/film/song/television program/etc; 3.) the world.

Please consult your rubric and models to ensure that you are doing your best work!

For a “4”: Did I….
• Write a topic sentence that provided the title, author, and genre of my text?
• Provide context of what is happening in the text, so my reader understands what I’m talking about (1-3 sentences)
• Find a direct quote from the text that proves my idea that is properly introduced and punctuated (Arnold states, ".....")?
• Thoroughly explain the significance of my quote/how it proves my idea (2-4 sentences)?
• Check for correct punctuation and spelling?

Ben Friedman | 25 comments In the song ‘‘remember the Name.’’ By the Front Minor. The song depicts a story and a message of people who work hard in every aspect of their life and that they wanted to be recognized for there hard work and for putting forward there time and effort. In a verse of the song a rapper by the name of Take raps, “He doesn’t need his name up in lights he just wants to be heard weather it’s the beat or the mic.” I can relate to this in my life because when I do work and I accomplish something in my life. I want to be heard I want people to know what I did; I want people to remember my name. Another quote from the song is “He works so hard he feels like he never has time.” While I am just a student I work to my best ability’s to maintain a high grade and to do many other things. And lately I honestly feel although I do not have time.

Jack Brill | 41 comments In the song "No Sleep" by Wiz Khalifa the song is about having a good time with your friends and when im out of school thats all I want to do. The line "no sleepin Live it up like it's the weekend" I think I can reflect to this line because I always have something to do during the week and during the week such as me playing in three basketball leagues on the weekends and doing homework. I guess it's true no sleep.

Monica | 43 comments In the fantasy book,"Untamed." by P.C Cast, Zoey, the protagonist is facing lots of problems. Being the high vampyre from her group of friends, ever since a previous accident with her other friends, Aphrodite and Stevie Rae, her friends right now doesn't trust her anymore. Aphrodite, they say, is a liar and tried to kill Zoey's best friend, Stevie Rae. "Since when have you cared whether Zoey lives or dies?" Damien said. This quote shows his trust in Aphrodite. NONE! But now, Zoey has said to give her a chance and all her friends agreed. This part of the story reminds me of another fantasy book. "The mortal Instruments series" also shows some similar things. The protagonist in that piece of text shows the same feelings towards a group of people and another group of people. Clary, the protagonist of this text shows passion and love towards Jace her previous boyfriend and trust and belief towards Alec, Isabelle, and a few others. There is a valid comparision towards these two texts.

Matthew | 34 comments I have picked the following quotes from The Outsdiders, by S.E. Hinton, that connects gang violence to the real world.

"You really killed him, huh, Johnny?"
"Yeah" His voice quavered slightly. Ï had to. They were drowning you Pony. The might have killed you. And they had a blade...they were gonna beat me up.."

In this part of the book PonyBoy and Johnny are getting jumped by the Socs, a street gang. They put PonyBoy's head in a fountain to try to drown him. Johnny stabbed one of the gang members to protect PonyBoy.

This part of the story connects to the real world because there are a lot of dangerous gangs commiting violent crimes just for the fun of it. Sometimes these gangs hurt people and even kill when they are trying to protect themselves. Just like Johnny, he killed someone in self defense.

Elva C. | 40 comments In the fantasy book Marked by P.C Cast and Kristin Cast, the book is about a 16 year old girl named Zoey Redbird. Zoey has a life, which is pretty bad because of her new step dad, problems with her alcoholic ex boyfriend, and Vampyres. Zoey didn't like vampyres. Trackers are the one who makes a regular human into a vampyre. Zoey had just been Marked by a Tracker, which means that she has a mark on her forehead that is a shape of a crescent moon. All new vampyres that had just been marked has to go to this school called, The House of Night, which is a school for only vampyres. Zoey makes a lot of stereotypes about vampyres, such as, they all drink blood, or that all vampyres wear black. "They probably don't even have regular classes. They probably have classes like Ripping Peoples Throats Out 101...." This quote shows that Zoey is stereotyping. Since Zoey has never been a vampyre, she believes that they have classes to teach vampyres how to rip peoples' throats out. This also reminded me of the book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie, because Arnold made stereotypes about Rearden kids. He believes that all Rearden students have a bright future, and they are all smart and rich. That is some of the stereotypes that Arnold makes.

Essam Alhumoz | 20 comments In the Song "Lose Yourself" by Eminem shows how hard Eminem tried to get to where he is now. Eminem is trying to show the listeners of his music that if they ever get the chance to be your dream don't let anyone talk you out of it just do it. Eminem had a try rough past because he faced many conflicts in his youth, but Eminem still followed his dream in becoming a artist. I can relate to Eminem's music because i want to become something and like Eminem if i ever get the chance to follow it i wouldn't listen to anyone i would make my own life decisions and take it. "You only get one shot, Do not miss your chance to blow" This piece of lyric from the song shows that if you ever do get the chance you will only get one and if you don't take it you may never get to achieve your dream.

Trinity Burgos | 31 comments In the song ''beautiful'' by Christina Agulera. this song gives a message to people who are very insecure and feel that lots of people dont treat them equally like there suppose to be treated. Also, to make people more confident about themselves and to be brave when it comes to feeling the way these people do. One stanze in the song that stands out the most ''...now and then I get insecure from all the pain im so ashamed...''This quote shows that sometimes this person feels brocken down / has a brocken spirit, also someone that feels they have no self asteem. I can relate to this quote refered to when I was little, I used to get teased at alot because I was a very chubby kid so at one point even though my mind wasn't that developed I still felt that way.

Kailey | 23 comments In the song "Diamonds" by Rihanna. This song connects to the outside world because of a line in their chours."Beautiful like Dimonds in the sky." This quote shows it connects to the world because she is relating to us saying that we are all stars and were beautiful and no one would change that. She is also reffering the stars to look like dimonds pricless items that may incounter our lives. Also that she believes in you and sees the light in your eyes. She is also preffering to tell us to never give up hope and that there is always a chance. This relates to my book New Moon a fantasy written by Stephanie Meyers because it both talks about that they still have hope in something. Bella hiopes that getting a motorcycle and spending some time with Jacob will cure her broken heart. She feels she needs to step outsinde her comfort zone and do something a little more dangerous and something hetr dad would disaproove of.

In Robert Lipsyte's realistic fiction book Yellow Flag, the protagonist is Kyle who is a teen musician and racecar driver. He encounter some problems through the book as of now as he fights for which subject he will pick. Kyle is good at both racecar and music, but at times, he gets stuck on which to chose. Musicians want Kyle and also his buddies on the race team need him. Kyle is busy all the time. He has a family all working for racecars and they need him on their side so they can be happy and win it. In school, Kyle loves musician and his teacher is Mr. G. Kyle is trying to get into the Brooklyn Brass master class. On page 10, "Kyle said," I can't make it". "You are joking," said Mr. G "You know how hard it was to get a school quintet into Brooklyn Brass master class?"" The quote shows that Kyle had the choice to chose between music or racing and he ended up choosing racing. At the end result, he didn't have a choice and had to pick one. This also happened to my life when I had a choice one day to chose if I wanted one laptop or the other. Still, I had to pick one even though I wanted both so bad. What happened in my life is similar to what happened to Kyle in my book.

Michael Vu | 24 comments in the song "if i were a core" by portal 2. this song connects to the outside world becuase there is top class and low class. "i think i could understand... how it feels to be in power i swear i'd be a better core" this quote shows it connects to the outside world becuase middle class have to work and have alot of pain just to stay alive. top class just gets everything handed to them. the quote means if he could just be top class once so he could feel how great it is he could be a better person.
