I don't think she's finished, she has the 50 point task marked as read in May.

Donna Jo Atwood | 207 comments Oops, I just read the 50 point tasks this weekend--I can't type.

message 4705: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) You're not foretelling the future? ;)

Couldn't tell if you were busy in early May and filling in later. Congrats on finishing!

message 4706: by Cathy (new)

Cathy (cathy_edens) | 14 comments I have a few more to add to my list of DONEness :-)

5 pts
2. Read an epistolary novel OR a non-fiction collection of letters/journal etc. - Ella Minnow Pea Such a cute little story. Silly, maybe, but I liked it a lot.

10 pts
6. In honor of Earth Day (April 22) read a book with the word Earth, Moon, Sun, World, Star or one of the other planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune) in the title.
- Words such as earthly, sunset, lunar etc. are acceptable. – Breakfast on Pluto

25 pts
5. BONNIE’S TASK - Read a book outside your normal genre(s). Example: Bonnie usually reads YA, fantasy, nonfiction and classics so she'd have to read short stories, plays, mysteries, etc. – Winesburg, Ohio – Short stories. Aaaand, I'm still not much for short stories.

9. SARA'S TASK - Read a book that has a title of 12 or more words. - The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Mayhem at the Fair that Changed America VERY interesting story. It was hard to get into at first, but soon enough, I was hooked.

That should add another 65 points for me! This is what happens when AT&T lines are cut and you have no Internet. :-)

It's not too late! The challenge runs March 1st and through Midnight (EST) May 31st. Hope you decide to join us!

message 4711: by SusannaW (last edited Apr 20, 2009 04:28PM) (new)

SusannaW (susannauk) | 51 comments Yes, I agree with Rory - it's never really too late to join. In mho, its not really about the points gathered, as everyone reads in different ways. Personally, I often finish books and can't read another for days as it lingers. I think it needs that extra time to sink somewhere into my psyche...! Every book I read changes what I want to read next.

For me, the challenge is about exploring books, sharing books, finding new ones you might never have read but for the tasks... learning what you like and don't like.... and half the challenge (time wise) is more than enough to get stuck in and have fun.

message 4712: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Yes! Do participate even if you're late starting. When I decided to participate, I was fairly certain I would not read something for every task. Part of the fun was identifying books to match the tasks. As a result, I've read more than I might have, encountered books of which I was not aware, and have broadened my horizons.

Donna Jo Atwood | 207 comments Jamie wrote: "Donna Jo - Congrats on finishing the challenge already! Wow! So, what was your favorite book that you've read for the challenge?"

I Really liked Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, and Now the Drums of War. Both of them have a historical basis--the one fiction, the other the letters of the WAlt Whitman family. The one I really hated was Ellen Gaskin's In This OUr Life. It made Grapes of Wrath seem like a comedy.

I am lucky. I read fast and --I just retired last fall, so I have time to read. I am in awe that many of you are juggling school, jobs, and family and still manage to fit so much reading into your lives. If this contest had been twenty years ago, I probably would still be at the 100 point mark.

So, Cynthia, if you finish the challenge early, and still have time, can you go back and redo challenges and count the points? It just seems to me that there are quite a few people who will finish this challenge this time, and that might be a way to narrow down the 25 pt. challenges... I dunno. Just a though.
But again, CONGRATS Donna Jo!!

I am really glad that you liked this series. I loved it!

message 4727: by Leora (new)

Leora Fianlly finished task 25-3, I looked on Jon's shelf and read 'The God of Small Things" by Arundhati Roy and 'Brideshead Revisited' by Evelyn Waugh.

I have heard wonderful things about both of these books so was excited to read them. Brideshead is also on the 1001 list so I was doubly happy to read it and kill 2 birds with one stone so to speak.

It took me FOREVER to read them because I didn't like them at all. (Sorry Jon-no offense intended). With Brideshead I kept waiting for something exciting to happen, and waiting, and waiting....

And with the God of Small Things, I was confused, it jumps around a lot and I had a hard time keeping stuff straight.

Phew and a happy dance on being done!

So I now have 385 points.

Sara ♥ (saranicole) *WHEW* I haven't checked this thread since Friday, so I just read 4 or 5 pages of posts.

First, CONGRATS Donna Jo!! I wish I could read as fast as you! But, alas... I'm only about halfway done! :)

Second, I finished another task:
Task 5.7 - Audiobook: Artemis Fowl 6: The Time Paradox by Eoin Colfer (4/20/09)

I FINALLY finished this book. I would have finished it a lot sooner if Nathaniel Parker had been reading it (like he did the first 5 books). He makes it come to life a lot more than this guy did. It was good, though. I love Eoin Colfer's writing!

I also read Kiss the Bride by Patricia Cabot as half of my 50-point task. For the other half, I'm going to read Being Nikki, Meg Cabot's new book that comes out May 5th.

I JUST finished Anne of Green Gables (about 30 seconds ago), but I still need to eat 2 green foods.... *starts planning* I have lettuce.... errrr... I might have to get creative! ;)

Lizzi Crystal (fortelleren) I was wondering Cynthia, is there going to be a summer reading challenge this year? I'm having SO much fun with this one (getting three times as much reading done as I usually do!) I want to do it again this summer! :-) Do we make suggestions for the tasks, or how does that work?

message 4739: by Roseann (new)

Roseann | 400 comments I finish challenge 15.3 over the weekend--EMILY DICKINSON:A BIOGRAPHY by Connie Ann Kirk.

It was a good introduction to the life of the poet, not quite a scholarly study, but covered all the important points of her life. It did make me want to reread some of her poems.

This brings my total to: 165. I really needto get going, I feel inadequate compared to some on the list ;-).

6. Read a book that was has been translated from its original language (i.e. it could be from Swedish to English or English to Italian etc.).

I read a translation of a 1960s French novel called 'Trap for Cinderella', by Sébastian Japrisot.

I thought it was going to be a straightforward, easy read... Japrisot writes with a deceptively easy style (like Camus or Graham Greene).

Then half way through, the plot had become so complex I started thinking, how on earth have I ended up embroiled in this...! It was meant to be a easy read! The novel was a clever mix of postmodern with the thriller/crime genre. There was also an intriguing study of female relationships/identity issues running through this, which I'm not sure was part of the plot or a subplot. Certainly the most 'literary' thriller I have read.

Ashley, if I'm not mistaken I believe the winners are determined by who finishes first? Maybe I'm wrong about that, but that was the impression I got. So the first few winners, and then the first newbie, most improved, whatever those were, though since Donna Jo I believe said she's new it would go down to the next newbie who isn't in the overall top list.

I thought that the winners were just anyone who finished the challenge... That was my understanding, though I could be wrong!

Beth F | 342 comments The winners are the top three point earners OR anyone who finishes the challenge, which is why there are so many 25-pointers this time around as opposed to the winter challenge (which only had 3 25-pointers)--so many people finished the winter challenge!

Most improved and best newbie was a recommendation made in this thread and Cynthia liked it so those people will get to choose a task too. If a newbie also finishes the challenge, the best newbie award would go to the next person in line (who didn't finish).

Kate (kathrynlouwca) That is cool. Will most improved and best newbie have seperate points amount? Like 20 instead of 25?
