Bonnie | 271 comments There has to be some blue colored ice cream, right? I bet if you go to the ice cream section of the grocery store, you could find some.

But, yeah, add blue frosting to anything (cupcakes, sugarcookies, cake, etc.) and that counts!

message 802: by Cynthia (last edited Mar 01, 2009 05:54PM) (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments I moved here about 2 years ago and haven't had the opportunity to go yet.

Elizabeth - Hugh MacLennan won the Governor General's award, James Aldridge won the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize, Gwethalyn Graham & Kenneth B. Clark won the Anisfield-Wolf award that year. The mother task has the option of a character/author with the mother's name as the other option.

Elizabeth (Alaska) My mother's name was Eleanor. I can have a character rather than the name in the title? (running to bookshelf)

message 804: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'm pretty sure that sherbet comes in blue. And there are always blue raspberry flavored candies that are definitely blue in color, although I'm not so sure they should be considered "food", lol. ;)

Elizabeth (Alaska) I didn't see the blue question, but there are blue M&Ms, and, of course, blueberry muffins - or blueberries on vanilla ice cream.

message 806: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Eliz Life is Short But Wide has a character named Bertha & A.A. Fair has a detective series with a character named Bertha as well.

message 807: by Leora (new)

Leora My foods will need to be blue too, I was also thinking about one of those blue juices for a drink. (Along with blueberry pancakes and a blue frosted cake)! Yummmm!

message 808: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Also Jane Eyre has a character named Bertha.

message 809: by Eliz (new)

Eliz (elizpalm) Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions! I think I'll go with blue sherbet and blueberries so I'll feel less guilty about falling off the diet.

And it is good to know that there are some characters out there that are named Bertha that don't have Big or Boxcar in the front of it. For that challenge, I was lucky, she'd given me some books that I promised it read ages ago.

message 824: by Terri (last edited Mar 02, 2009 03:57AM) (new)

Terri (terrisa-uk) Cynthia, I've just been to the library and picked up a book called 'fifty fifty' - it's an anthology of poems from the last 50 years and has 79 pages ... but it's not listed on here. Can I still count it? This is a link to some info on the book http://www.poetrylibrary.org.uk/news/...

message 825: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) 7. For Arbor Day – Do your part to save some trees by reading an e-book: Beyond the Highland Mist by Karen Marie Moning 5 Pts

Total as at 2 March: 5 Pts

message 826: by Bonnie (last edited Mar 02, 2009 04:14AM) (new)

Bonnie | 271 comments 5 Points:
3. Goodreads bookshelf: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

I ended up really liking this novel. I wish we had read it in one of my classes in high school as it would be really interesting to discuss. Wikipedia claims Baz Lurhman is going to make a new film of the book. I hope he gets Hugh Jackman to play Gatsby, which is who I imagined as that character!

Total Points: 5

Robin (robinsullivan) | 997 comments Ashley wrote: "Robin, if you are still looking for book awards from 1962, The Bronze Bow by Elizabeth George Speare won the John Newberry Medal for that year, and is a great book. I loved the ending. She also wro..."

Thanks for the recommendation Ashley - I'm kind of leaning toward Steinbeck - but it would be a re-read for me so a new author would be great and I generally like YA stuff.

message 828: by Fallon (new)

Fallon | 120 comments Cynthia, i also went to my local library and picked up a book on poetry - The best Australian Poetry 2003 - a selection of the best poems from australias literary journals. It has 96 pages, can that be counted or should i get a longer one?

message 829: by Susan (new)

Susan | 100 comments Cynthia-I have a question. How do you prefer to be notified of a book being read-I have a list of all the books I plan to read way back on page 13, do you mind if I just update that list or do your prefer a new message each time a book is completed?

By the way-I just finished Love, Rosie for the epistolary selection #2 on the 5 point list.

Thanks!
Susan

message 835: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa | 137 comments AGH! how do people already have books done?!

message 836: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa | 137 comments two questions- for capricorn does dance count as art? or are we talking painting, sculpting, drawing?

does this: Lavinia count as fantasy?

message 837: by Alice (new)

Alice (aliceg) | 254 comments Can I ask how you draw lines through your titles when you've read them? Like Fiona has done in her last post.

Alice (aliceg) | 254 comments this?

message 842: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Alyssa - dance counts as an art, but Lavinia wouldn't count as fantasy in my book

message 843: by Sara ♥ (last edited Mar 02, 2009 08:42AM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) There's a link right above the comment box that says "(some html is ok)". If you click that, it will show you how to italicize, underline, bold, etc. (It opens in its own window, so it won't make everything you've already written in the box disappear when you click it.) I can't get the indenting to work, but the others work fine.

The link to the left of it, "add book/author", will let you search for a book or author (in a little pop-up-type box) and will automatically add a link to the book or author you add, like this: I Heart You, You Haunt Me. (I'm currently reading this for my poetry book.)

message 844: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa | 137 comments thanks cynthia.
not surprisingly i have another question :)
for the spring cleaning task- i have 2 TBR lists. the one on here which is limited and one i started in high school that's super extensive and i update more regularly than my goodreads one. can i use that TBR list or does it have to be the one on here?

message 845: by Cynthia (last edited Mar 02, 2009 09:54AM) (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments It should be your goodreads list which means you need to read Jane Eyre.

message 846: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I know- (for those of you who have commented on books being done already)...
I started a book and am halfway finished...
Started my audio driving task (but I am only 15 minutes away from where I work, so this could take forever)
I started another book earlier yesterday and could not get into it, so I have three tasks at least started!

The ironic thing is I read four books between Tues-Sat last week and the challenge was not even going on then! I think I have been spending too much time on here and not reading...

message 847: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (affie) | 371 comments Robin- I generally seem to like Steinbeck as well. He's great. Let me know if you decide to read E.G. Speare. Those are some of my top favorites that I have read off the Newberry lists. (And I am trying to read all from both the winners and the honors lists, and I've gotten pretty far...)
Good luck with whichever one you pick!

message 848: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa | 137 comments Cynthia wrote: "It should be your goodreads list which means you need to read Jane Eyre."

except i was more than 50% done with Jane Eyre before the start of the challenge so i have to read Things I've Learned From Women Who've Dumped Me right? :)

message 849: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments That would be correct Alyssa.

message 850: by Jamie (new)

Jamie For 15 point task #2 (Poetry), I finished A Light in the Attic.
